Greetings from the AMS meeting in Austin. We are looking at 6in of rain or so. Thats what you get when you bring together 3000 meteorologists!

I should be down there *grumble grumble*. At least I'll be able to get to go to the one in Atlanta next year.

Who wants a fresh dose of physics? Not related to anything, but I found this quite cool - physicists have created an atomic gas with - get this - a sub-absolute-zero temperature. Yes sir, there is now a gas with a negative Kelvin temperature.

I, once again, worked on my CC screen today.  :) The change is on the LDL to make it look more authentic. Instead of just having the date and time that the currents were last updated, I made it look like the actual IntelliStar and on the LDL space is the location's name with the CC icon and temperature.

There are no plans to make it the final and it's only on the original 2004-2005 IntelliStar style for now, so it's available at this form here for you guys to try at your location: http://zach.dyndns-work.com:53205/cc/betaform.php

Attached below is a comparison. The upper attachment is how it was (still is technically, but not for much longer) and the lower attachment is how it's going to look.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

I love it, Zach. Well done!

The bill passed, so now it's a battle over disaster relief for Sandy.

Markets soared after the news - the Dow jumped a whopping 308 points today.

I never quite got into the holiday spirit this season, although I probably should as right now I'm probably not going to be coming back home until next Christmas. It's going to be a very long year in North Dakota.

This is also very bad for those who receive federal financial aid to pay off their financial expenses. The cuts will tremendously impact the number of Pell Grants being awarded to and the Subsidized/Perkins Loans could see even higher interest rates.

For the specific numbers, the bill in the Senate passed by a resounding 89-9 - that is about as bipartisan as you can get.

Patrick, although I agree with your post, it really doesn't matter if something passes now, because this entire fiasco has just been postponed until the end of February. Congress will continue its role of doing almost nothing until a few weeks before the debt ceiling deadline, and then this fight will happen all over again. And again when they postpone it at the last minute in April. Then June. And so on. Unless we can really address the United State's spending addiction and debt issue with a well-thought out and long term solution, this is now going to be a regular - and ugly - political event.

Finally, yes, taxes went up for everybody. Everyone here is going to see taxes up at least 2% out of their income checks now. The taxes for incomes above $400,000 a year went up as well. Unfortunately, spending has still not been addressed. Let's face it, people, not everyone is going to like what is eventually going to be proposed to be cut - especially if it involves federal aid. Reducing our spending is going to hurt a lot of people, but at this point folks will have to just deal with it.

As to what is going to get cut, I strongly suspect Social Security is going to be a big, big issue, as it will be a major factor to our debt if it is not addressed. The proposed solution is to raise the eligibility age, which could save upwards of half a trillion dollars. Foreign aid is also an issue. Military spending has been on the table for decades. I suspect some social programs are going to be chopped as well. We have to find $16 trillion somewhere, and it's not going to come from just tax increases.

My personal weather station is officially up and running as of this evening. It updates in real time, and if anyone is interested in seeing detailed conditions, the link is in my signature!

Or for those with signatures disabled.. :P

Neat! It'll be interesting knowing the conditions in your area, especially since I like studying the weather not only here, but elsewhere. I also have a PWS of my own, I'm sure you and many others know. Does any else have a PWS?

When I'm at home, I'm practically right on top of the airport and it has an ASOS. It's the same at school. So having one is kinda moot for me.

General Discussion / Re: No House Vote Tonight, You Know What That Means...

All I'm going to say is:

1) Hopefully we will get a deal done within the next couple days so we will - to stick with the pun - be holding to the edge of the cliff with only our fingertips.

2) I'm surprised people are surprised that we are in this mess, after the mess in 2011 regarding the debt ceiling.

3) The blame goes equally, both ways - Republicans for refusing to vote tonight, and stepping away from a compromise deal Boehner made with Obama, and the President and Democrats for being stubborn on the amount of spending cuts. It is sickening to see this unfold, and even more knowing that the new Congress is not going to look much different from right now.

4) Watch our credit rating go down again, from an AA+ to just AA. Congress is holding the U.S. economy hostage and they know it.

I test-ran Windows 8 and didn't much care for it. I am very content with Windows 7 and have no intention of changing unless Microsoft comes out with something truly awesome. Heck, I'm starting to use Linux more than Windows.

I do not believe it's just as black and white to say that it's his mother's fault. Sometimes parent's do not understand their children and their behaviors. I seriously don't think anyone here has the right to blame his mother, she may not have ever known he was capable of such a thing and ever if she did, she could have done very little to stop it. It's very unfortunate with this entire event, but it's not his mother's fault. Our brain's are very complex (if you haven't noticed) and analyzing it to see what a person is thinking now or will do in the future is practically impossible. We all should understand that it can take very little to cause a person to snap like this, especially if they've had a rough mental or emotional life. So, what can you do? Imprisonment is completely wrong, imo. Just because someone exhibits strange behavior doesn't mean they should be imprisoned for life. You might think that the mentally ill are just crazy or incapable of thought, but they have logical and normal thoughts somewhere in their brain. Really, the only solution that I see would be to keep a tighter gun and weapons control. Seriously, why do you need a gun? Unless you are a sportsman who is going hunting, I see no purpose. If you fear for your life, get a taser or something less lethal. It's not the gun who is killing people on it's own, it's the persons who are allowed to have them. If your government can't do that, they'd better start offering hugs and love to all the people in this country because anyone of them could do this if they get to that breaking point.  :hmm:

A few good points, but this tighter gun control is always going to be a rough issue, especially with the 2nd amendment.

Also, I'm sorry if it offends people, but the guns were registered to Adam's mother. I don't know how Adam found out she owned guns (I assume it was just word of mouth between mother and son), but knowing that Adam did have mental issues, I think she did have a responsibility to at least lock them away somewhere he couldn't get to them. Legally, she's exonerated. Responsibility wise...well, it's just my opinion.

Fairly significant severe weather episode expected on Christmas Day. Widespread damaging winds and/or tornadoes, a few long-tracked, are possible across mainly LA/MS/AL.  Looks like this year is going to go out with a true bang.

Lowest price I've seen in our town is $2.85, and they are still dropping. There's talk we could see $2.75 or lower by New Year's.
