Severe Weather / "Widespread" Severe Threat 4/3 - 4/5
« on: April 01, 2011, 04:00:44 PM »
I know I've been told not to post threads for every single severe event that occurs in the U.S, but I feel that one coming up warrants its own thread. GFS models are indicating a very strong storm system to slam much of the Eastern United States starting Sunday through Tuesday. The Storm Prediction Center is citing a widespread severe threat for the area, with tornado-embedded thunderstorm lines, plus the additional threats of hail and winds.

But of course, a lot of schools just say, "Why? I mean, it's not gonna happen to us." In defense of my school, though, it is private, and they DID get caught off guard, big time. Literally, it was mostly cloudy one minute, and pitch black the next.

Really? We had to do that Feb. 28, when a giant storm blew threw Chattanooga during the afternoon. My only beef: we were told to stay in the classrooms - with GLASS WINDOWS - instead of going out into the hallway. The windows were flexing, the storm was so bad.

General Weather Chat / Re: Hail

Don't know who told you that, but there has never been hail basketball sized recorded anywhere in the world. I'm sure if there was, though, it would destroy a call in seconds and probably instantly kill an unprotected human being.

Matthew's right about the Vivian hailstone. The hailstone with the largest circumference (length of the stone all the way around) came in at 18.725 inches. That hailstone fell in Aurora, Nebraska. It previously held the record for the largest hail stone at 7 inches up until the Vivian stone.

Old Man Winter may play an April Fool's joke on us before he completely gives out. A major nor'easter is forecast to dump between 6 to 12 inches of snow on areas such as Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine Thursday and Friday.

You guys are never gonna believe this. The Storm Prediction Center storm report shows a wind gust at Belle Chasse, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. The recorded speed at the local government office?

100 mph.

Tuscaloosca was in the clear, they weren't impacted by a tornado. As for the report, it was frustrating that the tornado wasn't large, but there is a still shot from that streaming video we were talking about. There WAS a funnel cloud in that area.
