I get my info from a reliable source. Obviously you get you're from the media

Not exactly. Science (particularly atmospheric and environmental science) has always been fascinating to me. As such, I took many such courses in school. So everything I know I learned from taking all the science classes I could. Maybe you should try to learn a thing or two in school-that is, assuming you don't already know all there is to know.

Hell yea they're a ***** to work on!  They contain all these parts that are supposed to be standard but have their own special characteristics it drives me insane!

LOL, yeah but before you can worry about the parts you've actually got to GET INTO the computer, which, especially with Compaq's, HP's, and Dell's is often a task in and of itself. I don't know how more modern HP's and Compaq's (Dell's too) are, but the older one's used what was called a riser board to house the computer's PCI and ISA cards instead of seating them directly on the motherboard itself. So basically all the cards were in there horizontally-good luck unscrewing and removing them. And if you had to go all the way to the motherboard, you needed to remove all the cards and the riser board first. Very complicated computers to work on indeed.

How so?

Well, our earth has fewer and fewer plants every day. Entire forests have been leveled in some parts of the world. Plants only take in so much CO. The rest is left to to float away into the atmosphere.

And as far as his claim that it would cause fewer natural disaster's, I really don't know how he comes to that conclusion-actually, I do-he's twelve going on twenty. Anyway, CO is the very gas that fuels our weather. If there was no carbon, there would be no weather. CO traps heat, which also fuels our weather. More heat and CO equals worse weather, because it has more fuel to grow on.

LOL, I've been doing it since before they sold parts on the internet. That's one reason why I (unlike alot of you probably) really like the little mom-and-pop type computer shops. Most of you guys are from the internet age, and have probably never gone into a computer shop more than a time or two, if ever.

Yea, I was mostly just contrasting it to folks who just buy more expensive name brand pre-built PCs (Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc).

Generic all the way!  :worship:

Without a doubt! I've never owned any name brand computer, but in all the years of repairing PC's I've worked on many, and every time I've come away hoping to NEVER have to work on one again. Especially Compaq's and HP's. Those are just nightmares to work on.

TWC Today News / Re: Changes to Guest priveleges

In light of the changes that have occurred recently I've decided to once again allow guests to view everything, EXCEPT the Contributions board. And again, that's because I don't want unknown people having complete access to people's contributions.

I disagree with Billy. Those components you chose look just fine. Here's a tip-when you look for computer parts NEVER judge by age alone. A component that may be outdated may be just the thing you need and nothing more.  :sunglasses:
My Compaq PC (which I bought in late 2005), has a single core Athlon 64 3500+, so the processor Matt was thinking about getting is probably not that outdated.

That's ancient in the computer world.  ;)

Everything Else TWC / Re: Never seen this happen before

Then that's pure negligence on their part. How do you let a water leak go long enough to damage equipment?
Mechanical Failure caused water to leak at an alarming rate, but again, you think it would have been able to be stopped or maintained. But then again, no one noticed it until the litteral "BANG" that was heard through out the building.

Exactly. You'd think someone would've seen something and stopped the leak before it was too late. I'd imagine there'd have to be a considerable amount of water to create a bang that big.

Is there any clue as to what type of leak it was, i.e.e a ceiling leak, or a floor leak, etc.?

One extra fan...maybe...if I find out things are running a little too warm.  Other than that, nothing else.

Yeah, fans are good. Having an extra fan won't hurt at all. And they don't take much power either, so it won't effect what kind of power supply you need. Generally speaking, 400 should be sufficient, but indeed 500 would be acceptable. It would offer you more power in case you decide to add more bells and whistles later on down the road.

Now for two more questions:  will I need to be sure to calculate watts from the power supply and figure it with the board and stuff?  or is that if you're really gonna add extras to the supply (ie lights, extra fans, etc.?)
For power supplies, I'd generally think that anything ranging from around 400 to 500 watts should be sufficient. You don't really want to skimp on the power supply because if it shorts out or fails, your entire system could be trashed.

400 is plenty.Any power supply can short out. 500 is still acceptable I suppose, but why spend more than necessary?
Because Matt mentioned adding lights and extra fans. If you get enough of those, they can really start to suck up extra power.

He didn't say HE was going to. He just asked if he had to consider it under any circumstances other than that. And the answer stands as no. Unless he;s going to add bells and whistles there's no need to go all out on a power supply.
