Aargh. What a month its been. So, this time last month my grandmother went into the hospital to have one of her heart valves replaced. Seems simple enough, right? It should've been, but it wasn't. The operation was successful, but she's been in the hospital ever since. She was supposed to recover in a few days, and then be sent to get rehabilitation, and then ultimately sent home. Well, to make a long story short she never made it that far. She's had complication after complication, including liver disease and encephalitis. For awhile we thought she might still pull through, but over the past month she's gotten progressively worse. The liver disease and encephalitis (fluid on the brain) have taken their toll. Within the past week she's basically become a vegetable. She's no longer able to speak, probably doesn't recognize anyone, is so yellow she's almost green (from the liver disease)and basically just lays there staring into space, mouth agape. Last night she was transported by ambulance back to her home in West Virginia (she was here in MD in Johns Hopkins) to live out her final days. The doctors said she'd live till Saturday at best. Well, we just got a call that we'd better get up to West Virginia in a hurry because she probably won't make it to see tomorrow.
Yeah, what a month its been.
