General Discussion / Re: Swine Flu
« on: May 05, 2009, 02:14:47 PM »
Just to specify, because there seems to be some belief to this.  Eating pork will NOT give you swine flu!  It can not survive the amout of time between butchering and being placed on the grocery store shelves.  Also, hogs in America, where we get the meat from, do not have this flu and they virus may very well not be able to spread from humans to hogs.

It's called swine flu but it comes from a mix of pig flu, bird flu, and human flu, it's not just pig flu.  That's why the name is so misleading.

Yeah and changing it to H1N1 didn't make it any less misleading. Now people think its the common flu!  :D

Although, they are now saying that this flu is actually LESS potent than the common flu, so perhaps the H1N1 title isn't too misleading.

Feliz Cinco De Mayo a mis amigos en TWC Hoy! Espero que tengan un dia asombroso!!!

TRANSLATION: Happy Fifth Of May to all my friends at TWC Today! I hope you all have an awesome day!!!
:P
I got the first part, the second part, not so much..:P

I struggle in Spanish big time.  I hate it..  We watch this soap opera called Destinos.  We are on the 39th episode of 52, and I have NO IDEA what is going on. I HATE SPANISH (class)

LOL I always hated Spanish too. Especially the times when I had to speak in front of the class. As if trying to speak Spanish in front of the whole class wasn't bad enough, I sat next to and was always paired with the hottest girl in the class for most of these assignments. Not that I minded sitting next to her or being paired with her, but trying to speak in Spanish with her in front of the whole class was an absolute disaster.  Just thinking back to it makes me cringe.  :P

You guys just don't seem to get, no matter how hard we drill it into your thick skulls, that WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS VIRUS AND ARE LEARNING EACH DAY. Its great that they think its not as potent as once thought, but until now WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT.
Its not that I don't agree with you.. The virus is a threat since we dont know much about it. I'm just irritated over how the information is being told to the public

HJow else would you want it told to us?  :dunno:

Influenza is a virus, not a disease.

As to whether they will cure it, that could spark a whole other debate.

please do fill us in on your knowledge...what is YOUR definition of a "disease"?

Well, here's the dictionary definition:

http://dictionary.reference.com/dic?q=disease&search=search

Seems to me the flu would be a disease.

Gotta make up the time somehow...

Not necessarily. You can foresee winter or other inclement weather. You can't foresee a breakout of disease.

This is a NEW disease
The flu is not a disease. No matter what the "type".

and I am sure more and more doctors are learning something new about it every day.
Sure about that?
Yes it is, and yes.

Okay, H1N1 is just the normal flu, which is why it is being called H1N1.  Also, normal flu cases ALWAYS get sent in for testing, so therefore, it's just the normal flu.  Health Departments are shutting/threatening to shut down schools because of the normal flu.  BS

I am sorry, but this is not the normal flu.  Sure, it may be a little less threatening than the media or whoever is saying it is, and it could be much worse.  It is NOT KNOWN.  This is a NEW disease, and some of you on here are not understanding that,  and I am sure more and more doctors are learning something new about it every day.  This is probably why the name has been switched from  "swine" to "H1N1".  Obviously this has to be bigger than the normal flu.  Is it being taken out of proportion?  Sure, in some cases it probably is.

IMO, the name change was not smart. It implies that this is the H1N1 virus, which it is, except not THE H1N1 virus we're familiar with. I think its name should reflect its difference from our run of the mill flu. Regardless of what the pork industry wants.

American Media is terrible period.
You think everything in America is terrible, so that is no surprise. :)

No it isn't, you need to get over with the facts.

Please do share these "facts".  :whistling:
The American media but not the media from other countries (besides Mexico) is exaggeration nearly every new issue. From Obama's election, to the swine flu, to global warming. (OMG WE"RE ALL GONNA DIE!!! )Maybe it's because we're such a huge country, but many people would have to agree with me.

I'm not gonna start a flame war here...you can do that via PM but my 2cents.

LOL, you've said nothing worth starting a flame war over. I asked you to substantiate your claims with proof, not your opinion.
