DOn't you use the Applian Slingbox recorder?

yes, however I still have to physically get it to record on the tivo first while I'm at work

hmm well you could try timer recording it for applian. would timing it work for the tivo?

not gonna work when my laptop's asleep when I'm not around

Martin... do you not get it? 8:57 is the end of Storm Stories that week, which does NOT have an ID screen and the LF is also 1 minute long. Your best bet is 7:57 or 9:57. You're not going to have much luck if you keep it at 8:57pm.
