General Discussion / Re: CFL bulbs
« on: February 24, 2008, 01:03:47 PM »
We have a number of these candle bulbs on our house in various lighting fixtures:

Until they make a CFL that looks and acts like these, plus works with dimmers, we'll be mostly using incandescent bulbs. There are a few CFLs in use in our living room, and it takes a while for them to "warm up." They are very dim when you turn the lights on, and then take a few minutes to get bright. One thing I have noticed is they don't get hot. The light could be on for hours, and I can touch it without getting burnt.

Wow, I didn't think taking a stapler apart would require that many tools! :o
Neither did I, but I ended up using all of them.

He opened the windows so he could hear the thunder louder and so he can let all the rain come in. He's very weird.
Why on earth would he want it to rain inside?

Interesting. Maybe it was deleted because it is an FLV. I have no idea why they would do that, but are your other FLVs still in there?

Mission accomplished. The stapler is pretty much all taken apart (after I had to break some plastic). Surprisingly, all the metal parts are made from steel.

What about the staples?

The staples have since been long removed from this stapler.

Edit: Oh, by the way:

That's my work site.

Anyone ever tried to disassemble a broken stapler? It's a lot harder than it sounds.
There's a lot of metal and its not easy to break metal
It's not that I'm trying to break the metal, I'm trying to remove all the metal pieces from the plastic. So far I've got out a few springs and such, but not much else.

And Kevin made the exact same mistake again at 1:42 PM ET. He called them  "qualifying races" and said they'd attempt to get them in again today.

Edit: Dang, you beat me by 15 seconds, Steve.

Did he happen to mention "California Speedway?" If so, the track changed names yesterday to "Auto Club Speedway."

Local Forecast / The Award-Winning IntelliStar
« on: February 23, 2008, 01:29:08 AM »
Ok, this is probably really old news, but it was new to me, so I decided to post it...

I was just browsing Wind River's site (the company whom designed the IntelliStar), and it appears that the IntelliStar actually wan an award back in the 2004 Electronica USA Embedded Systems Conference. The IntelliStar won a best-of-show award in the communications division of the show.

Quote
ALAMEDA, Calif.--April 01, 2004--Wind River Systems (WIND, Trade), the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that its device software that powers NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars Exploration Rovers -- Spirit and Opportunity -- won the overall "Best of Show" award, as well as the best aerospace and defense product. The Weather Channel's Intellistar won "Best of Show" within the communications category. Wind River enabled its customers -- NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and The Weather Channel -- to develop and run the software that powers their respective devices faster, better, at a lower cost and more reliably.

[...]

The Weather Channel's Intellistar is the next generation, geography-specific TV programming system and device. By relying on Wind River to develop the Thunderstorm PCI card -- the brains of the IntelliStar -- The Weather Channel leveraged Wind River's device software expertise and technology portfolio to architect, develop, deliver and field test the IntelliStar. IntelliStar will be used by TV program distributors nationally, including Cox Communications, Comcast Communications, DirecTV, Charter Cable, and National Cable Television Cooperative.

"Wind River provided us with the device software and services expertise that were required to reach a new level of programming advances that include robust content and sophisticated localization capabilities," said Brian Shield, executive vice president and chief information officer at The Weather Channel. "The IntelliStar provides our customers with immediate enhancements and opens the way for future programming advances and support for new revenue services. We are honored that this innovative technology received kudos at a conference that is so well-known for being on the forefront of technological advancements."
