I'm having trouble staying logged into the forums. Every time I come back after some time of not being here (usually a few hours), I have to log back into the forums. I do use the actual logon page and I am sure to click the "always stay logged in" box. I've also cleared my cookies.

Weatherscan Discussion / Re: Weatherscan Topic
« on: February 13, 2011, 10:02:10 AM »
Just occurred here Evan @ :45 just the forecast scroll bar was visible before cuing to a commercial with the ID screen appearing as i post.

Commercial on Weatherscan?
It can happen. When Weatherscan reboots, it defaults to the TWC feed until the the graphical local portion of Weatherscan returns. If TWC happens to be in a commercial when the reboots occurs, you'll see the commercial.

This Sunday, I'll be flying to Norman, OK for a week to attend a training workshop on radar and severe weather warnings.  When I complete this workshop, I'll be able to issue warnings during future forecasting shifts.  I've only flown a few times in my life, so I'm naturally pretty nervous.  Wish me luck!
That sounds awesome. Hope you have a good time and learn a lot. Good luck, Patrick! B)

This isn't about a standard STAR, this is about the DirecTV local forecast app that runs locally on your own DirecTV receiver box. For any warnings, it will display a simple Weather Bulletins page during the local forecast from the onset of the warning being issued until it expires. When a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued, it will also display a notification on screen (similar to the ("Get local weather now/clear" thing) along with a beeping sound. In my year and a half of having DirecTV, I've seen the LF app display the Weather Bulletin page once, and that was for a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. I've been under countless other watches, warnings, and advisories and none of them have displayed on the LF. I believe only the big three (tornado, severe thunderstorm, and flash flood) get any mention on the LF app.

IntelliStar 2 Discussion / Re: IntelliStar 2 Beta Launch
« on: February 01, 2011, 12:42:43 PM »
It's interesting how the IS2 has holiday names in the LF. So far, I've seen Christmas, New Year's, and MLK Day.

I saw that as early as the WeatherStar III.  It depends on how the forecast is written, not from any "holiday sensor" programmed into the Star.
The reason earlier STARs, like the III and 4000 had used holiday names is because that's how the NWS phrased their forecasts for holidays. When the NWS forecasts were dumped in 2002 in favor of TWC's own text-based forecasts the holiday names disappeared because TWC doesn't use holiday names in their forecasts. As for the IS2, the forecasts are likely from TWC, but probably a different source from the current IS, XL, Jr, and 4000 forecasts. If you notice, the IS2 does not omit the "F" from temperature readings like the other STARs do.

Chambersburg, PA (December 2008-December 2010)
Chambersburg doesn't have Weatherscan anymore? :o
They do, but I don't have access to it anymore. We have Digital Starter, which doesn't include Weatherscan, so they removed it from out lineup. If we were to upgrade to one of the higher packages, we'd get it back.

Local Forecast / Re: Advantages/disadvantages of the Stars
« on: January 27, 2011, 10:33:33 PM »
IntelliStar/IntelliStar 2 - Advantage: they're the newest.
4000/Junior/XL - Disadvantage: they're older.

It's like comparing a 1986 Honda Civic to a 2011 Honda Civic. They both do pretty much the same thing, but the newer models add additional features that older models may not have had.

I suppose if you dive into the technical details of each STAR, you could pick out advantages and disadvantages for each, but generally the newer STARs are technically more advanced than the older ones, and arguably have more advantages than the older models.
