Emulator Videos / Re: Weatherlover's Emulations
« on: July 07, 2013, 09:45:38 PM »
Several weeks ago I mentioned I was working simultaneously on two legacy STARs, well here's the other one completed in After Effects after about 5-6 weeks. :D Just like I did with the 4000, I studied over different XLs (real and emulated) to get the animations/transitions right.

NOTE: The radar for Atlanta (KFFC) was not working today from the NOAA site so I had to leave that blank. Also I'm not purposely trying to self promote Mc Donalds, the ad I used for the ad crawl is the same ad, word for word that's been used on my IntelliStar unit for the past few months.

CODE RED - 60% chance of development.

Code: [Select]
1. A STRONG TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED ABOUT 1150 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF
THE WINDWARD ISLANDS IS MOVING WESTWARD AT 25 MPH. SHOWER AND
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY CONTINUES TO SHOW SIGNS OF ORGANIZATION...
AND RECENT SATELLITE WIND DATA INDICATE THAT A CLOSED SURFACE
CIRCULATION MAY BE FORMING. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE CONDUCIVE
FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THIS DISTURBANCE...AND A TROPICAL
DEPRESSION OR A TROPICAL STORM COULD FORM AT ANY TIME...WHICH WOULD
REQUIRE A TROPICAL STORM WATCH OR WARNING FOR PORTIONS OF THE
LESSER ANTILLES. THIS SYSTEM HAS A HIGH CHANCE...60 PERCENT...OF
BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.

Intensity forecast - Most models here seem to agree on a Chantal within 36-48 hrs from now, about three of them go further into hurricane intensity, but I'm very doubtful of that especially if it heads towards Hisponola.

General Weather Chat / Re: Storms of the 21st Century
« on: July 06, 2013, 07:25:47 PM »
A lot of wacky weather events have occurred over the past 13 years of this century, so I couldn't settle on 5, I chose 10.

(Not rated in any particular order)

1. Hurricane Katrina
2. Southeastern US January 9-11, 2011 Winterstorm (Snowjam 2011)
3. June/July 2012 & August 2007 Heatwave (tied)
4. May 2013 Moore, OK Tornado & May 2011 Joplin, MO Tornado (tied)
5. March 2008 Atlanta, GA tornado
6. Hurricane Sandy
7. February 2013 Northeastern Blizzard
8. North Georgia January 2000 Icestorm & Great North Georgia Flood of 2009 (tied)
9. Groundhog Day 2011 Blizzard
10. Super Tornado Outbreak of 2011

EDIT: I picked out a top 5, the ones highlighted in bold.

This tropical disturbance is a little more interesting...

Code: [Select]
2. CLOUDINESS AND THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE TO SHOW SOME SIGNS OF
ORGANIZATION IN ASSOCIATION WITH A TROPICAL WAVE OVER THE FAR
EASTERN ATLANTIC ABOUT 800 MILES SOUTHWEST OF THE CAPE VERDE
ISLANDS. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS COULD BE BECOME A LITTLE MORE
CONDUCIVE FOR DEVELOPMENT TO OCCUR OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS WHILE THE
DISTURBANCE MOVES WESTWARD AT 15 TO 20 MPH. THIS SYSTEM HAS A LOW
CHANCE...20 PERCENT...OF BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE
NEXT 48 HOURS.

EDIT: Here's a satellite loop, there's definitely a circulation in there.

General Discussion / Re: What is the last thing you bought?
« on: July 06, 2013, 11:02:22 AM »
A new copy of NSMBWii - $38.60

The old one I had is slightly scratched and randomly stops working during gameplay. My niece is certainly happy, I haven't been able to get the old one to work in over a year and suddenly out of the blue it started working the day before the new copy arrived in the mail. Talk about irony.

20% chance of development

Code: [Select]
1. A WEAK SURFACE LOW IS PRODUCING WIDESPREAD CLOUDINESS AND SCATTERED
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER MUCH OF THE SOUTHWESTERN GULF OF
MEXICO. THE LOW IS EXPECTED TO MOVE NORTHWARD AT 5 TO 10 MPH OVER
THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS...AND MOVE INLAND ALONG THE TEXAS COAST BY
SUNDAY. DEVELOPMENT OF THIS DISTURBANCE...IF ANY...SHOULD BE SLOW
TO OCCUR DUE TO PROXIMITY TO LAND AND ONLY MARGINALLY FAVORABLE
UPPER-LEVEL WINDS. THIS SYSTEM HAS A LOW CHANCE...20 PERCENT...OF
BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS. REGARDLESS OF
DEVELOPMENT...THIS DISTURBANCE WILL PRODUCE PERIODS OF LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINFALL AND GUSTY WINDS ACROSS PORTIONS OF UPPER TEXAS AND
SOUTHWESTERN LOUISIANA BY LATE SATURDAY NIGHT AND CONTINUING INTO
SUNDAY.

I never see hail fall when we have severe thunderstorms either outside of about three occasions I can remember. The worst being golfball sized hail back on March 15, 2008.

Song: "In the Rain" by Kenny G. (April 1993 Playlist) - Couldn't have picked a more appropriate song.
It took me until a couple of days ago to figure out how to get the icons to sync with the text on the TCF, but once I experimented and figured it out I had my DUH moment. :P

Also to those who see this if the audio is too low, let me know. I can re upload a second version that's narration free in it's place. I can't really judge for myself because the left audio in my earphones isn't working, there's a cut on the wire so I can only hear audio from the right side. :hmm:

Forecasting / Re: Spring/Summer Weather Discussion Thread
« on: July 03, 2013, 07:36:44 AM »
So The Adventures of Noah's Ark begins... 2-4+ inches forecasted from the NWS; TWC is forecasting 3-5 inches. Still too early to say, but if things meet or exceed expectations, I wouldn't be surprised to see this rival The Great Flood of 2009.
http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=FFC&product=NCR&overlay=11101111&loop=yes

Our NWS office is also mentioning the chance for tornadoes. In addition to that, they preemptively issued Flood Warnings yesterday for the locations that would easily flood during this event.

There is a pro to all of this, I get to enjoy 70s today and through the holidays! :D
