Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Cristobal
« on: August 27, 2014, 12:22:12 PM »
Upgraded to a Category One hurricane. Not only is Cristobal the 3rd hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season, it is the 3rd consecutive hurricane of the season as well.
I think you meant not only is Cristobal the 3rd named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, it's the 3rd hurricane as well.

You basically said the exact same thing I said minus the word consecutive. I just meant that Arthur, Bertha, and Cristobal all became hurricanes in the Atlantic which would make it a continuous chain of named storms becoming hurricanes.

Every.Simpsons.Ever Marathon on FXX (in the middle of Season 6 currently)

I would imagine the world record for longest TV marathon has already been obliterated and they still have 9 days, 19 seasons + the movie to go.

I'm watching that right now.   It's the middle of Season 12 at the moment.

I forgot how good this season (12) was like the one that just went off that N'Sync guest starred in. I haven't seen it in several years.

The only thing I don't like about this marathon so far is they're cropping the pre-HD seasons and it doesn't look right in certain scenes of the episodes. I don't get why they didn't just letterbox them or leave them in 4:3. :dunno:

Julie has announced that she's heading to WXIA-TV in Atlanta, where she'll be a weekend meteorologist. She'll be at TWC through September, and "you will still find me here at TWC filling in," she says.
https://www.facebook.com/twcjuliemartin

Man, I don't know what it is about that station, but they sure do love to scoop up the female TWC mets. First Cheryl, then Sam, and now Julie. I'm surprised they didn't try to hunt down Heather Tesch for a job there after she left TWC. When I saw a new post for this thread, I automatically assumed Julie must be leaving because I haven't seen her in months.

The irony here is it seems like since she became a certified meteorologist a couple of years ago she's been gradually getting less airtime.

Also, Julie Martin is taking Tracey Humphrey's weekend shift, Tracy was moved to the morning shift to work on a new morning show on that station called "Atlanta Alive" which started a few weeks ago this month.

I like the concept/idea of the Weather Lab, but my only complaint is over how the lab looks too cluttered to me with all those monitors/boards. I don't know if some of them are just there for props or they are being legibly used on/off air.

Current Model Guidance tracks are keeping Invest 96L north of Hispanola enough to avoid any significant land interaction. Also attached below is the current intensity forecast from these model guidance.

I don't even want to post an image of what the 18z HWRF showed, it's truly a textbook example of a worse case scenario. Plus I'm sure it's all hype given we still don't have a definite accuracy of the center of circulation yet.

Thanks Sam!

Shifting gears, no true legacy STAR emulation is complete without a true radar representation right? Well this is what I have been working on this evening for my favorite legacy STAR of all time: The WeatherSTAR4000.

Below are my rough drafts. Surprisingly it was a lot easier to put together than I thought. :D

Credit: Radar image (FFC radar site), interstate lines/markers, state/county outlines were provided by noaa.gov only for the sole purpose of showing off the radar. I plan on drawing up everything in Adobe Illustrator (except the radar of course)

NOTE: This is my first rough draft, so I'm still tweaking around, that also includes the radar banner. I updated the legend to the 8 color code, what's left is to redesign (and recolor) the banner.

WeatherSTAR III Emulation (w/ Animated BG) - Phoenix, AZ

This animated background is inspired by a real animated background of a night time desert with lightning off in the distance.
NOTE: I do apologize if my animated lightning may appear a bit cheesy, it was my first time animating lightning in After Effects. :blushing:

General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch
« on: August 13, 2014, 12:02:19 AM »
2014 Is the worst year for Atlantic City as 4 out of the city's 12 casinos have closed their doors and more than 8,000 workers are on the streets. The Revel, which I myself have been a big fan of, is closing their doors after failing to secure a buyer at a bankruptcy auction. The megacasino was open for just two years, but never turned a profit.

It's so sad to see things spiraling downwards in my hometown. The effect on the local economy will be terrible...I'm glad I'm going to move out of here after graduation. AC will end up like a ghost town in a few years. Blame all those greedy politicians authorizing casinos. There are too many casinos in the East Coast, eating up their own revenues.

Obama should do something and stop allowing other states from building casinos. The effect is devastating and nobody is stopping the saturation from getting out of control.

That wouldn't really be a good idea to have the government intervening to regulate which states can and cannot operate casinos.  That's an issue that should be resolved within that specific state.

The economy here in GA is certainly better (not outstanding), but better now than it was 5 years ago. I recently heard a week or two ago that Georgia has now claimed the #2 spot behind California in movie production, out-beating New York now (which was #2) which has been helping the economy the past few years. I guess that's why they're calling us the "Hollywood of the South". I'll admit I have heard of a lot movies being filmed in the Atlanta area. Some scenes from Anchorman 2 were filmed in the Five Points area downtown and some scenes from Dumb and Dumber Too were filmed in Marietta for example.
