Is there a difference between a Subtropical and Extra Tropical Storm?
Yes, an extratropical storm has no tropical characteristics whatsoever.  Tropical characteristics include a warm-core and symmetric system with an upper-level ridge involved.  Our low pressure systems with cold and warm fronts in the mid-latitudes are extratropical as they are cold-core and asymmetric systems with upper-level troughs involved.

Subtropical storms are actually the hybrid breed between extratropical and tropical storms.  They have characteristics of both types, but they'll usually transition fully into one type later in a few days.  If a subtropical storm reaches winds of 74 mph or greater, then it's classified a hurricane by definition and deemed to be completely tropical.

As you can tell, atmospheric systems can freely transition over from one type to another provided that the given background conditions are right.  Hope this response answers your question!

That helped me understand the difference a lot better. Thanks!  :)

I have an itchy feeling this little critter will be our "D" storm. I guess we shall see, development is expected to be slow the next few days.

Quote
1. A TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED ABOUT 750 MILES EAST OF THE WINDWARD ISLANDS
IS PRODUCING DISORGANIZED SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY.  SOME
SLOW DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM IS POSSIBLE DURING THE NEXT COUPLE
OF DAYS AS IT MOVES TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST AT 15 TO 20 MPH.
THERE IS A LOW CHANCE...10 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A
TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.

I agree with Patrick, I don't think this thing should have been named Cindy.

I just saw a Heat Safety Tips screen on my IntelliStar. Is this a new product, are maybe a discontinued product that has returned? Pictures coming soon.

No, it's old I remember seeing it on the IS back in August 2007 during a heatwave here.

Nick and Disney have turned into a load of crap-teen-reality shows. Cartoon Network carries the only two toons I've ever cared for, that I found funniest: Tom & Jerry and the Garfield Show. Garfield is being ripped apart limb by limb.
I'm going to bed now, I'll add more soon.

Thank goodness Teen Nick is bringing back a block of Nickelodeon classics like Doug, All That, Kenan and Kel, Clarissa Explains It All, etc. on Monday. As you said Nickelodeon and Disney hardly show cartoons anymore. Just a bunch of teeny bopper sitcoms/reality shows. Plus, I tried once to watch the Garfield Show.  It is nothing like Garfield and Friends.

I tried once to watch the new version of Scooby-Doo just for the heck of it and really sucks. I don't ever recall there being a love connection between Shaggy and Velma in the original or any remakes after that unless it went way over my head. There's no connection between it and the original except the clothes they wear and the fact that they're in "high school".  I don't get why they feel the need to ruin a lot of these cartoons with remakes that completely rewrite the history of the original.

You guys are all lucky you get to go on vacation. I was going to go to Florida with my Mom and Sister but it turned out the week they wanted to go is the week I go back to university so that isn't going to happen  However I did get my pass to CES 2011 which is so early in January that class isn't back in session yet so hopefully I'll get to take a vacay then if I get the money together to book the plane tickets and hotel.

On another topic who's excited for The 90s are All That on TeenNick that starts this weekend? I know I am! If you don't know about it they are going to be airing 90s Nickelodeon shows on TeenNick. As of right now these shows are going to be aired...

Opening Week:

All That
Clarissa Explains it All
Doug
Kenan & Kel

Subsequent weeks in rotation:
Aaahh!!! Real Monsters
The Adventures of Pete & Pete
The Amanda Show
Are You Afraid of the Dark?
CatDog
Double Dare
GUTS
Hey Arnold!
Legends of the Hidden Temple
Rocket Power
The Ren & Stimpy Show
Rocko's Modern Life
Rugrats
Salute Your Shorts

Ah, Nick at it's best. It's kinda funny because before this channel was changed from theN to Teennick they used to syndicate a majority of these shows.  My favorite cartoon to watch was Doug and my favorite live action show to watch was The Adventures of Pete and Pete, The Amanda Show and All That. I used to like watching Double Dare also. They should have turned Nick2 into a channel for these shows to continue to be syndicated, that channel is pointless it's basically Nick running on a Pacific time zone schedule.

If Hurricane Season 2011 ends up being as active as 2008 (As far as US landfalls is concerned) I'll be making a montage video that will recap this season (see post #266 for the revamped 2008 version I made). The graphics and color scheme will look like one of the following, similar to the graphics in my final draft of my feature presentation video. I think I might go with the latter than the former on the color scheme, but the blue, red, and black was inspired by the 2008 graphics used during Storm Alert and I like that also.

Of course, I can't take credit for the banner as that was made by Donovan. I think it works really well with the graphics.

So, if I'm understanding your post correctly Patrick, if a storm reaches tropical storm status but it won't remain that way for long and won't affect anyone, can the NHC choose not to name it? I thought they had to name every storm once it reached tropical storm status, whether it impacted anyone or not.
NHC's job is to designate if any system is a tropical storm, which automatically gets a name no matter what.  This system is one that could have easily been forgotten or ignored in the not too distant past.  While Cindy may technically reach tropical storm criteria, I'm questioning our entire naming system where every storm gets a name.  I'd like to see more practicality.  Do you really want to waste names on storms that are going to die very soon and provide virtually no impact?  After all, there were several name-wasters in 2005 that made us run out of names on the list, and we had to resort to the Greek alphabet.

I agree, but as far as 2005 goes since it got so active so fast for so long maybe they second guess themselves on what storms would become a threat or a dud because if I'm not mistaken that year the Atlantic ocean temps were near record warmth one of the many reasons so many tropical cyclones were able to develop so quickly.

Taken not too long ago from a very slow moving thunderstorm. It caused some flash flooding in our backyard making it look like a swamp. Excuse the crappy picture quality.
