General Discussion / Re: Happy birthday Curt!

Happy 16th birthday Curt, I hope you enjoyed your big day!

I noticed that the Local Forecast used backgrounds (the first LF ever used a shot of what appears to be their meteorologists working or something), and screen shots from promos about the Weather Star display the Local Forecast somewhat differently than we are used to remembering from the original Weather Star: It displayed the main text of the current screen superimposed over the national feed (similar to the backgrounds used from 1986—1987), with a blue LDL spacer at the bottom. The "satellite LF", at least in this video, seems to consist mainly of montages of photographs.

That's something I thought was interesting about the video myself.

I really like the 30th Anniversary images on weather.com, especially the ones showing the logo progressions and the different slogans.

And I had no idea there were so many different logos.  In fact, according to the image (though the '80s logos looked very similar and only had slight modifications to them), the present logo has been used the longest of any logo that has been used at TWC.  So for those of you who thought a logo-change was ridiculous, you may want to think again. ;)

Where are you seeing these images? The only ones I see are on-air meteorologist "age progression" photos.

Sorry, but since when are we not allowed to make our own opinions? I said I do not care for it. I'm glad for TWC to continue their 30 years in operation. It's just that they've gone so downhill, that many of us are not into their current state anymore

That's fine and dandy that you have that opinion, the majority here including myself would agree about not liking how they are now either, but I don't want that derailing from the purpose of the thread which is to discuss the positives of TWC, not to rank what milestone is better than the other and how far off the cliff they've gone or how much they're jumped the shark.

I for one do not care about their 30th anniversary. I do however have their 25th anniversary still fresh on my mind..(I loved that lf intro they use in 2007)

I didn't care for the 25th anniversary, I think the 20th was the best milestone that was focused on, but that's beside the point. I know I'm not a mod or admin. but if you're not contributing anything positive or meaningful to this thread besides a snide comment about how you don't care about the 30th anniversary I would rather you not post in this thread at all.

General Discussion / Celebrating 30 Years of The Weather Channel
« on: May 02, 2012, 10:11:39 AM »
30 years ago today, history was made in the Cable television industry when the idea of a 24/7 Cable Network that would broadcast weather all day every day began. Critics of course saw immediate failure and embarrassment in such a concept and the first few years almost saw predictions from critics come true, but when TWC began doing live reports during Hurricane Season with Hurricane Hugo in 1989, it put the network on the map as a force to be reckoned with that obviously proved those harsh critics to be dead wrong about their quick demise. Today, TWC is one of the most powerful and influential cable networks that exists. Even if you're like me and don't like the direction the network has gone in the past years, it has proven that it can still be a reliable source during historic weather outbreaks such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards.

As a treat from TWC alum Andre Bernier, below is a Youtube video of the very first hour of TWC's broadcast from May 2, 1982. The first 30 minutes is an inauguration ceremony from Las Vegas, the second half hour is the first 30 minutes of The Weather Channel being braodcasted from their studio in Atlanta, GA.

"Crystal Egger

Heading into hour #4 now - continuing coverage on TWC of severe weather (possible tornadoes) in MN, IL, IN, OH, KY & NC! Be safe everyone...it's gonna be a long night!"

They are done with storm coverage at 8pm and not back till 10pm ET. This is getting embarrassing.
If there are tornadoes on the ground they should provide live coverage.

What "continuing coverage" and hour #4 is she talking about?!?!  Right now, Turbine Cowboys is on, and I surprisingly saw the tail end of Weather Caught on Camera at 7:58 CT, which is odd because weather.com advertises that WCL was supposed to be on then.
They must have preempted at 5 and 6 PM for storm coverage.. if you're gonna preempt those two hours, then preempt all night for petes sake

They can't, they have multiple overdue electric bills to pay. Why do you think the lighting is not always that great in the studio sometimes? They count on these shows to get them by.

I've made plenty of IS emulations in the past, but this is my very first attempt at making the Blue LDL. I wanted to make a whole new LDL, but I think this one complements this IS Concept really well.

EDIT:  I forgot to mention the titlebar was made by Donovan, I just modified it.

Frankly, I'm still shocked some of you even use TWC as your only source of music.  There are plenty of other ways to find smooth jazz and other non-vocal songs that you're deeming as the only suitable music for a LF.  TWC was never meant to be a music channel but rather a weather channel.  All of us should be thankful that they even bothered to have music at all during the past 30 years!

TWC exposed me to genres of music I had never really heard or listened to. If before January 2000 you asked me what type of music I listened to I would have told you Rap, R&B, and Hip Hop because that's what I grew up around hearing as a kid. I didn't know what Smooth Jazz was as a 7 year old and I didn't have any interest in it until I started hearing artists like The Rippingtons, Pat Metheny, Spyro Gyra, etc. and then I thought, "Wow, this is nice!" I remember how the first time when I was 7 and I heard Linus and Lucy play during a snowstorm, I was thinking "Hey, it's the Charlie Brown Song! They're playing the Charlie Brown Song!" I would immediately start dancing and humming the song everytime it played. If there was nothing on that day, I would purposely leave it on TWC just so I could hear it again. It's weird to think back on it now, but back then I was so amused by all the different types of music I was hearing month after month and year after year. Now I could care less because I'm well aware of how I can find other songs and artists in relation to not only Smooth Jazz, but Soft Rock, Techno, etc. that made me more versatile to music.

If I could, I would severely punish the person or persons responsible for getting rid of smooth jazz and Trammell and replacing them with s :censored: y music.  Who here agrees with me?

It depends, will the consequence involve me going to prison? I don't want to have to spend years behind bars next to a cellmate referring to me as his "wife." :P

The Episode of "Ice Pilots" they did not bother to pre-empt was from 2008.
That series wasn't out until 2009 though...

Maybe it began production in 2008 and just didn't start airing until the following year. Plenty of live action shows tape a year or two in advance.

General Discussion / Re: Commercials You Love

The stuff he says in most of those ads are what makes it hilarious.

The Best Lines
"My BFF Becky just text and said she kissed Johnny, Well that's a problem because I like Johnny."
"I'm like OMG, Becky's not even hot."
"Your 15 minute car insurance may not cover my 90,000 car so I sue you because that's what I do."
"Sorry Robert, 5 dollars doesn't buy my attention."
Everything he said on the Creepy Motel one was funny. :P
"Turn left up ahead. Recalculating, TURN RIGHT NOW!"

Project Mayhem (Allstate Mayhem Commercials)

^Some of these I've never seen before. Also some of them abruptly cut off, but other than that it's great compilation video.

And just wow, this is just the worst night for them to be doing this  for those who remember two years ago on this same night... :furious:

Yes guys, as Zach has pointed out and told me, this is the exact two-year anniversary of the horrid FaaF incident, when TWC refused to report about tornadoes in Arkansas that did, unfortunately, cause deaths.  Jim, thankfully, gave his two cents about the situation, but this obviously did not help tonight.  It's very ironic that this incident occured on the same date.

And, we can't use a "general public" excuse here, because TWC is receiving some angry posts on their Facebook page.

I almost forgot that incident and yet here we are again still not learning anything from the past.  Sometimes I wonder why Jim bothers anymore. It's pretty bad when one of your leading guys calls you out on your BS. I'm sure there are plenty of other local news network that will move heaven and earth to have him work for them. Let's see how they like them apples.

Don't worry, I know they wouldn't care if Jim just walked out on them for good tonight. I just like to believe they would be desperate to want to keep that from happening. :P

Excuse me for this, but why the :censored: is TWC not pre-empting right now?  There are numerous tornado warnings out.  I don't care if 8 PM gives me a different story.  I want that live coverage NOW! :furious:

Tornado Central?  Yeah, I don't think so.

I've learned for quite some time it's better not to understand their logic and reasoning for a lot of things they choose to do and not do. Just shake you fist at the TV, lower your head, shaking it in shame and disgust, turn off the TV and quickly find some local streams covering the severe weather in that area.

I'm still amazed that after 30 years, noone has the hailstones to challenge TWC (WeatherNation doesn't count, they're staying more exclusive to the internet as far as I know) If no one wants to do it, that leaves me no choice, I'll have to do it. How does "The Weather Zone" sound? :P
