What exactly is going on? I never understand the politics behind this. Does it just mean higher taxes for us to pay or something.

To keep it short and simple, when it comes to the taxes yes. As much as 3,400 a year for everyone, in addition to automatic cuts in the government. The positive to it is that it's retroactive so if a deal is done this week these things can be prevented from taking effect, but if congress keeps on dragging their feet for weeks and months on this, the negative is we slide right back into a recession by Spring/Summer.

Not surprised, just utterly pathetic.

They should have gotten Rick Perry involved in these fiscal talks, there would have been three agencies of government goin' adios in the sequester cuts, commerce, education, and.............................................uhhhhhhhhhh I don't remember the last one.  Oops. :blushing:

EDIT: The Senate saying they might vote tonight before midnight on the tax increases/cuts measure.

2012 was OK. It wasn't completely crappy nor was it spectacular.  :itsok: I'm cautiously optimistic about 2013, the past few odd years haven't been that great either.

^Sorry, but I couldn't resist with the video!
Oh damn these corrupted, wall street bought out Washington politicians for being stupid enough to not even come together/vote on something as simple and clear as day as tax rates!

I feel an apology is due here. I said none of us have the right to blame the mother, but I was not aware that she had legally purchased weapons and didn't store them in a secure location and her son found them. Now knowing this information, there is no doubt this was her fault. If you want to own a gun, have the intelligence to put it away properly. However, I still stand that we need much more strict laws and regulations.

Unfortunately, I believe whether she stored them somewhere safely or not wouldn't have made a difference. I'm sure he would have still been able to get access to them since he lived with her and he would have known where they were. Even if he didn't, he probably wouldn't have had a hard time buying some off the internet.

This is my problem, why would anyone, whether it's self defense, hunting, or sports do you need assault rifles? It makes no sense to me. Leave those in the hands of those in the military fighting in a war zone, not in your house or on the streets. No one needs that much ammo for self protection, to kill/hunt animals for food/livelihood, or recreational fun.

EDIT: The banning of assault rifles is already up for debate, but maybe the selling/purchases of guns over the internet should be banned and left confined to gun shops. Uh oh, I shouldn't have said that out loud, the 2nd Amendment police will come to my house and haul me off to prison.

Although El Nino is technically dead per se, the pattern for these last 2/3rds of December has been El Nino-ish and so far January looks to be off to the same start. I sure hope so! I've seen about 3-4 inches of rain within one week (Dec. 19-26). I can't remember the last time that's happened. :o

A new ID screen premiered today, and it's using the same music from last year's Winter ID screens. It's stock footage of snow-covered grounds with a person running across it at the top (you can only see the feet of the person)

Another new one was shown today of a skier riding down a mountainous slope.

According to IntelliStar2 from YouTube, there was a new emergency feed that appeared back on Monday at 4:18PM ET/1:18PM PT   but I never saw it. Just wondering if anybody here has seen the new EF at all yet.

I saw it, but it wasn't around that time, it was in the morning. Jen Carfagno was having mic problems and it popped up. It was the same graphics they use on the weekly planner/7 day outlook now.

Well severe weather here was a huge fail as I had thought yesterday. The good news is we got more heavy rain with embedded thunder and a couple of flashes of lightning earlier.  :D

50, Rain and Windy - We've been steady around this temperature for the last 18-24 hours or so becasue the warm front hasn't moved north as fast as the models suggested.
