General Discussion / Re: Explosions Rock Boston Marathon
« on: April 19, 2013, 07:52:23 AM »
Yesterday, the FBI revealed who their two suspects were in this bombing investigation. One wore a white cap and the other was wearing a black cap and video footage showed at one point they even conversed with eachother.

This morning, one of the two suspects was killed in gunfire with the Boston Police along with one police officer. A manhunt is ongoing for the second suspect (identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19). He and the other suspect were brothers. Gov. Deval Patrick ordered a lockdown of all public transit and residents on the suburbs of Boston and the entire city of Boston to stay indoors as a massive manhunt for the second suspect was underway.

Thunderstorms are approaching from NW Georgia, they should be here within the next 1-2 hours. Temps will be falling from the upper 60s to the mid 50s today behind the cold front. So much for Spring sticking around. :P

OCMs & Personalities / Betty Davis

I went ahead and started a new thread since the other one was mainly about her departure (and it's been nearly 2 years since it was active.)

I was always curious to know where she ended up since her departure from TWC, I did a quick search and I see she's now working as a meteorologist in the Miami, FL area. She's been on WPLG-TV since the Fall of 2011.

The only thing that would make this more ironic would be if she and Adam Berg were working together at the same station! (He's working at their competing NBC station)

They're trying (sometimes way too hard) to stay as relevant as possible with viewers. They anxiously need us to keep hittin' em up on FB or Tweeter (as Rick Perry would say) :P

On an article I found on MSN this morning, I am now confused about two things.

http://news.msn.com/us/boston-bombing-what-we-know

Quote
At about 2:50 p.m. ET on Monday, two bombs exploded in Boston's Copley Square, near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Yesterday, reports said that the explosions occurred at 2:10 p.m. ET.  I know time may not be a big deal, but in my opinion, the time at which these explosions occurred should not be difficult to figure out, so it concerns me that this has changed from the preliminary reports.

Quote
No unexploded bombs were found on Monday, despite previous reports, authorities said at a press conference Tuesday.

I heard yesterday that the Bomb Squad set off at least one more bomb to detonate it before it caused any more damage.  Now this latest report says this is no longer true.  How, and WHY, would you lie about something like that???

Does anyone else have any information?  I know this is still a developing story, so a lot of the details are very fuzzy at this moment, but I don't understand these differences in the latest reports.

To answer the first question, I wasn't aware there were reports that the bombs exploded around 2:10pm, when I first heard the news from multiple sources (ABC, NBC, CBS, etc.) they reported the bombs exploded around 2:50pm ET.

Regarding the second question, it's probably a case of initial misinformation. I had heard the same regarding a third bomb being found at the finish line and was being detonated by the Bomb Squad. It's common to get misinformation in situations like this where you're trying to get as much developments as rapidly as you can on what happened. It's similar to what happened during the Sandy Hook Shooting where the majority of the media was misinformed about who the shooter was because the shooter was carrying his brother's ID.

Just to give an update, the injury count has shot up to 86, death toll remains at 2. Pres. Obama will be doing a live press conference very soon. Also the JFK Library fire is said to be most likely not related to this event.

I'm glad to hear there weren't more deaths from these explosions, seeing the raw footage it really could have been a lot worse.

EDIT: I did forget to mention that this has been said to be a terrorist attack (which I had suspected) from what I heard from ABC and our local news affiliate from the same network. It's just a matter of who and why right now.

Hmm, I have no idea. The first one sounds like a mix of Kevin Eubanks, Pat Metheny Group, Spyro Gyra, and David Becker Tribune, but I know it's not any of them though. There's the possibility it could be just production music.

Have you tried Shazam? Maybe you'll be able to identify it from there.

Awesome!  :cool3: Unfortunately like you said, such a concept will never exist in a million years! I would imagine it would look just like that though. It would be neat to see in existence.

Apparently, the Wii U hasn't been selling as quickly as they've hoped.  I guess by shutting down the Wii's connectivity they're going to try to "encourage" people to spend $300 for a Wii U.

I just bought my Wii 8 months ago, and I'm certainly not going to upgrade.  I'll just miss what I'll be losing but get on with my life.  Oh, and I'll be getting an Ouya when it comes out.  Look it up on Wikipedia - it seems to be very interesting and promising.

I read about this game console several months back, I wish it luck if it's going to be competing with Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony though.

I know I'm probably one of a quickly dwindling number of people who still own a Wii and enjoy the voting and Mii contests, but when I found out today that the WiiConnect24 service will be shut down at the end of June my reaction was a mix of sadness and shock.

I've only owned my Wii for 8 months, but it's the little things that one grows to enjoy, and I've really enjoyed these little features.  If nothing else, even on my busiest days, I've always been able to find a few minutes to spend voting, making a Mii for the contest, or even just reading the news.  In about 9 weeks I won't be able to do that anymore.

I still have a Wii, but the only time I use it now is to play games with my niece when she comes over. I never really used any of the features you mentioned. I didn't have the internet for the Wii even if I wanted to use those features. It's kinda funny that Nintendo is scratching their heads at why it's new gen. of the Wii is sinking in sales right out of the gate. The WiiU should have been the Wii to begin with. They were 6 years WAY too late in what it offers. (Except that Gamepad, I like the concept of that.)

SNL did a skit about TWC last night. A few OCMs have posted about it, even though it is clearly making fun of all of the longform they have been running. They also feature Jeanetta Jones for some reason.

Ah man, too many great parts to quote em all. I feel pretty bad for Tadd, 2 inches with little to no precipitation. You can't hit a lower blow to a man's pride than that.

Forecasting / Re: Severe Weather Event - April 7-11, 2013
« on: April 12, 2013, 08:08:05 PM »
Well this event turned out to not be that bad in our neck of the woods. We got a lot of heavy rain, thunder, and lightning, but it wasn't what I would call severe in any nature.

The Good Side: The rain washed away some of the pollen.
The Bad Side: The pollen count was still well over 7,800 today.
