Forecasting / 2014-2015 Winter Outlooks: Another Frigid Winter Coming?
« on: September 07, 2014, 12:38:09 PM »
The Old Farmer's Almanac is predicting eastern U.S. 'refriger-nation'
The eastern two-thirds of the United States, including Southwest Georgia, is predicted to see temperatures as much as 5 degrees lower than average in some winter months, according to forecasters with the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

“Across the eastern two-thirds of the country we’re calling it refriger-nation, then you see it turns almost exactly opposite on the (Rocky) Mountain line,” said Janice Stillman, who is in her 14th year as editor the annual publication. In an interview last week, Stillman said that the almanac’s meteorologist told her his computations actually indicated a greater deviation from normal than what he was comfortable with predicting.
##“It could very well be colder than what is printed in the book,” she said.

This is what they're saying locally for my area...
Annual Weather Summary: November 2014 to October 2015
Winter will be colder and drier than normal, with near- to above-normal snowfall. The coldest periods will be in early to mid-December, from late December through early January, and in mid- and late January. The snowiest periods will be in early and mid-January.

Local Forecast / An Alternate Version of "Rainy Day" by CC Gilmore?
« on: April 13, 2014, 04:13:34 PM »
I randomly ran across this, it sounds an awful lot like it...This version is called, "Fortune Teller" by Incognito I'm assuming the same Incognito that's had music featured on TWC before. :dunno:

EDIT: LOL this is an alternate version, I found the version that played in June 2012 on the same page called, "Funk Rain" by Incognito.

Winter Weather / Winter Storm Pax - February 10-13, 2014
« on: February 09, 2014, 10:32:11 PM »
Another major winter storm is expected to slam and hammer the Southern CONUS hard and possibly slam folks along the Eastern seaboard as well.

Model guidance paints an ominous picture for folks in GA/SC/NC/VA. These states could be the hardest hit by snow and/or ice. Please note this is a long duration event; 24-36+ hours of wintry precipitation from TX to VA which is coming in two rounds, the second round model guidance has recently been trying to phase and amplify which has been causing the storm system to bomb as it travels up the East Coast.

Personal note:
It shouldn't come as no surprise Atlanta became the national spotlight for the disastrous traffic jam just two weeks ago due in part to city/state public officials, school districts, mayor/governor dropping the ball by not prepping adequately enough in time. I can tell you after the scrutiny they suffered from the public, the way they're going about this storm is a complete 180 degree turn around. There's too much to name, but so far from what I've heard and seen things should go much more smoothly this go around. I really hope they have woken up for their sake, what happened here was a complete embarrassment and shameful imo.

The NWS here is forecasting possibly 1-3 inches for Atlanta and Northwest GA; 3-6 inches (locally higher) for Northeast GA per the Winter Storm Watch which was recently updated an hour ago.

If you're going to be directly affected by this storm, please feel free to post about what's happening in your backyard if you can.

An unusually far south section of the Deep South region is in for a memorable experience over the next 72 hrs. Winter Storm Watches have been flying up from Southeastern North Carolina, to South/Central South Carolina (This includes the cities of Columbia and Charleston), to Central/South Georgia (South of Atlanta metro; includes Augusta, Columbus, Macon), to Southeastern half of Alabama (includes the city of Montgomery), to Southern Mississippi to Eastern Texas! Even parts of the FL Panhandle may join in on the fun!

In my neck of the woods I'm too far north (heh, imagine that) I don't get to say that often.

Does anyone have any relatives or friends that will be affected by this storm?

EDIT: To the mods/admins. if this storm gets named by TWC, feel free to change the thread title to said name if you feel it's necessary to.

Winter Weather / Worst Arctic Outbreak in 20 Years Coming 1/5-8/2014
« on: January 04, 2014, 09:56:50 AM »
I hope it's ok to start a separate thread for this. I felt it should have a separate thread given the magnitude and extremity of this cold weather.

As this event unfolds, you can post info here on what's happening where you are. For my area, tomorrow into Monday morning looks to be messy as the Arctic front pulls in, there will be developing precip in front, along, and behind the front which will mean a rain changing to snow or a rain changing to mix to snow scenario. The biggest concern where I am is over a FLASH FREEZE. Sunday afternoon will reach a high around 50, but as the front passes, temps are expected to drop 30 or more degrees within a 2-3 hour time period which means whatever precip is still sitting on roads and bridges will freeze immediately and just in time for Monday's morning rush hour.

Here's a snippet of the morning disco from my NWS office for tomorrow and Monday.

MODELS IN EXCELLENT AGREEMENT WITH RESPECT TO TIMING OF THE NEXT
SYSTEM WITH CATEGORICAL RAIN CHANCES PUSHING INTO NORTHWEST ZONES
BY 18Z SUNDAY. THIS WILL BE A VERY QUICK MOVING SYSTEM WITH MOST
OF THE IMPACT BEING DONE WITH FOR THE ENTIRE CWA WITHIN A 12 HOUR
PERIOD. WILL BE A VERY INTERESTING 12 HOUR PERIOD THOUGH AS COLD
AIR RUSHES IN ON THE BACK SIDE...CHANGING PRECIP TO A MIXTURE
INITIALLY BUT VERY QUICKLY TO ALL SNOW FOR AREAS NORTH OF A ROME
TO CLEVELAND LINE. STILL A BRIEF MIX POSSIBLE SOUTH OF THIS
LOCATION WITH TOP DOWN METHOD EVEN INDICATING A PERIOD OF FREEZING
RAIN POSSIBLE AS PRECIP ENDS FROM LAGRANGE THROUGH ATLANTA.
AMOUNTS WILL BE TOUGH AS I AM WORRIED HOW RAPIDLY PRECIP PULLS
OUT. GENERALLY 1 TO 2 INCHES SUPPORTED BY THE MODELS AND WPC
GUIDANCE BUT AM LEANING ON THE LOW END AT THIS POINT GIVEN LIMITED
WRAP AROUND INITIALLY. BIGGER ISSUE FOR THESE AREAS WILL BE HOW
QUICKLY TEMPERATURES DROP RELATIVE TO PRECIP ENDING WHICH COULD
CREATE A BLACK ICE SITUATION AT THE WORST TIME...NAMELY MORNING
RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. WILL HOLD OFF ON WINTER STORM WATCH AT THIS
POINT BUT WILL LIKELY ISSUE EVEN BEFORE AFTERNOON PACKAGE...MAYBE
WITH THE MORNING UPDATE.

Winter Weather / Winter Storm Cleon

I'm surprised this storm hasn't garnered much attention considering there are quite a few members here who will be greatly affected. Especially if you live in an area expected to see ice which is a large area from OK to KY.

Does NOAA have a site (similar to the link below) where you download individual radar frames without "the ring" (don't know the technical term for it) cutting off what's outside of that ringed area?
