TWC Today News / New TWC Today theme!
« on: June 11, 2010, 01:56:22 AM »
I’m pleased to announce a new, customized  TWC Today theme for the forums!

I found a free theme developed by another guy that I downloaded and customized. You can apply this theme by going to your profile settings > look and layout > change theme, and all the way at the bottom, select use this theme. I am also going to develop a red version for Storm Alert mode. Questions and comments are welcomed.

NOTE: For some reason, all the user badges aren't working at this point. I'm looking into it.
Also, gonna have to work on the logo to make it bigger, but that shouldn't be hard.

Pretty big police chase in the area today, and I actually witnessed it a portion of it. The chase lasted an hour, starting in the city of Pittsburgh, leading into the East Hills neighborhood of the city, then via I-376 into Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills, Swissvale, and ended in Monroeville. KDKA reports several police agencies were involved, including Pittsburgh Police, PA State Police, Allegheny County Police, Allegheny County Sheriff's Office, Penn Hills Police, Wilkinsburg Police, Swissvale Police, Churchill Police, Forest Hills Police, and Monroeville Police. The chase originated in the city, so Pittsburgh Police took jurisdiction over the investigation. KDKA obtained surveillance video and they counted 26 police cars behind the suspect at that point in time.

After crashing in a very busy Monroeville shopping center parking lot, the suspect hit several police cars, injuring 3 officers:  1 Allegheny County Sheriff's Deputy, and 2 Pittsburgh Police officers. The two city officers where hit and thrown into the air, sustaining severe injuries to their lower extremities.

It's sad  someone would run from police and drive like that, putting literally the thousands of people he passed on the road at risk. Here's one of the videos via KDKA: http://kdka.com/video/?id=73163@kdka.dayport.com

IMO, AT&T has a lot of work to do period. Their advertisements are really not that good, and the company seems to have become a hollow shell of what it was when it actually provided cable service (way back when, in the early XL daze).
I beg to differ. I think some of their ads are pretty creative, especially the one where there are orange carpets being rolled out across landmarks all across the country. And while they have work to do to improve their wireless capabilities (i.e. less dropped calls), they certainly aren't a hollow shell. If they were a hollow shell they wouldn't be the number one land line provider and the second largest cellular provider in the United States. And you really can't compare AT&T to how it was during the digital cable days. Besides the fact that they aren't a digital cable company anymore, he company, technology, and consumer needs have drastically changed since then.

This is unrelated, and I have no idea why I was just thinking of this... but remember the days of the L-bar? And how when the L-bar was first cued it needed an extra second or two to render the radar images (thus why viewers would see "Local Doppler Radar" before the mini radar actually appeared? I wonder if they worked that issue out for the mini radar on the LDL, or if that's why the data itself (text and all) takes a second or two to pop-up once the blue background rises up from the bottom of the screen.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: Finally!

No Weatherscan on Comcast? That's really surprising. The majority of Comcast headends east of the Mississippi carry Weatherscan. Maybe there's just no need for it in your market.

Programming and Graphics / Re: New HD LDL?
« on: June 08, 2010, 03:01:04 AM »
Once the IntelliStar2 rolls out, HD STAR viewers won't see the LDA at all. The IntelliStar2 will have a 15% and 33% LDL as the current SD IntelliStar does.

is the star going to roll out to all companies that carry TWC HD, or just some? i've been a little confused on that topic.

and, how many LDL's exist on TWC, again? lol  :P

Any cable company that carries TWC is required to have a STAR (as part of the carriage agreement). So, any cable company that has an SD IntelliStar now, and provides and HD feed, will  be required to have an IntelliStar2 (the HD STAR).

As for the LDLs, hmm I'm not sure. Here's the ones I can think off of the top of my head:
  • Domestic IntelliStar 15%
  • Domestic IntelliStar 33%
  • Left Display Area
  • HD LDL
  • HD L-Bar

And then eventually the 15% and 33% LDLs when the IntelliStar2 launches.

Scott Williams is reporting live from the tornado-ravaged areas of Ohio. I believe this is the first time Scott has done a live report.
I don't care for him that much, in front of the maps or in the field.

This was tested on all STARs in the Pittsburgh DMA, and no where else.

« on: June 06, 2010, 02:02:39 AM »
Comcast owns the rights to their "iGuide." Any other cable co that uses that guide actually pays Comcast royalty fees. As far as it not being updated since 2005, that's actually not true (don't get me wrong, it's still shitty). Updates come out, however it can take years for some places to see the updates (and some areas never see them) since they're rolled out on a market-by-market/headend-by-headend basis, and not all areas have the capability to run the new updates.

I will post pictures of my beloved  FiOS guide later on

My feelings are rather mixed on that... sure the kid may have gone a little far, but I'm also strongly against parents physically slapping their kids whether or not it's just an act of punishment. I still like to consider it somewhat of a child abuse.
That's the problem with the majority of kids today - their parents don't beat them. Children need to be somewhat scared to disobey their parents, and learn young. Otherwise when they get older they get more and more out of control.

Local Forecast / Re: Narrations on the HD STAR

It probably will cover much wider areas too. I cant see cable companies buying as many HD STARS as they have Intellistars
I agree. Example... I just checked, and Comcast in metro Pittsburgh operates 16 IntelliStars, but only two Weatherscans for the same exact area. I can easily see Comcast only doing 2 HD STARs, covering the sames areas the 2 Weatherscans do.

Thats a good point! Are these actually live?

Jeff's segments? Yes. He does 4 live forecasts (7:10, 7:40, 8:10, 8:40), and 4 live LF intros (7:08,7:38, 8:08, 8:38).
