General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch
« on: June 17, 2010, 07:17:30 PM »
Comcast in Pittsburgh has went completely digital. Now, if you just have a cable hookup and no converter or STB, the only channels you can get are local ones (2-CSPAN, 5-WPCB, 6-KDKA, 7-WPGH, 8-WTAE, 9-WQED, 10-WPMY, 12-WPXI, 15-WPCW, 98-Ed/Gov't). Thats TEN channels. You can't even get TWC (16) without a converter box anymore.

Prior to the coversion, Comcast customers in Pittsburgh could get channels 2-99 without a box.

Speaking of cable, I noticed in the past month or so that these thick cables that are orange and black in color are being placed underground along the outside of my subdivision. Are these fiber-optic cables?
Seen any Verizon trucks in the area recently? Could be Verizon wiring for FiOS.

They're two completely different ad systems, so unless it's a paid sponsor ad, it's not really important that they match.

Weatherscan Discussion / Re: Re: Dish Network Weatherscans
« on: June 16, 2010, 01:13:16 AM »
As of now, Dish will get regional Weatherscans on a separate channel. The Weatherscans will be just like the Weatherscans cable viewers see (likely excluding the lifestyles segments). The Weatherscans will cover three DMAs and show forecasts for the big cities in those DMAs. For example, a Pittsburgh Weatherscan could include the Pittsburgh DMA, Cleveland DMA, and Buffalo DMA.

I think it's stupid. Once I have local info, I don't care what the weather for the next 6 hours in Dallas.

Actually, it won't. I have learned that the LDA will continue to show (during programming that uses the 33% LDL) even with the HD STAR's 33% LDL (so you will see the left strip of data, not the bottom 5 day forecasts).

Sorry, I don't have a link to it.

Edit: there is a link to the guy's website at the bottom of every forum page.

Kind of unhappy that Law & Order was canceled, although it hasn't been as good in recent years. I'm happy that SVU, my favorite show, was renewed. Hopefully L&O Los Angeles has characters that are as good as Stabler and Benson in SVU. And I'm with Matt, New Adventures on CBS was very stupid, and I too am glad Burn Notice was renewed! A few of the other shows I'm glad to see returning are Two and a Half Men, and Rules of Engagement.  I'm kind of sad to see Trauma (NBC) not renewed, I liked that show.

Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion

Well I've seen the drizzle and fog icon many a time before, but notice how the icon I'm pointing out has the rain drops totally obscured. I'm used to  the drizzle and fog icon being just a fog cloud with three un-obscured rows of rain drops below it.
The icon your picture is the XL's official Light Drizzle & Fog icon. The other icon you're describing is just the Light Drizzle icon, when no fog is reported.

Also, why is it that most XL's have the main observation site also on the 8 city? There were some very nasty storms that went through TC and Petoskey last night, and the only reporting site on this XL's 8 city that is in the lower peninsula is Pellston. And that was on the north edge of the line of storms that moved through that area. As far as I've known, the thumb's XL is the only XL I've seen (in person) where the main CC site is not also on the 8 city.
Almost all XL's have the main ob on the local obs screen, and as Mike said, most IntelliStars did pre-HiRAD. The reason they did that with the XL is pretty much because back in those days there weren't as many ob sites as there are today. The reason the STAR you described might not have the main ob in the local obs is that it was more recently configured (for the most part, they no longer insert the main ob in the local obs pages when there are enough other ob sites nearby). It could also be for the fact that the unit serves a very large area and they needed to get another ob point on the local obs in place of the main ob site.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Re: WeatherStar ID Field Option?
« on: June 12, 2010, 02:34:51 PM »
All you have to do is add it in next to your STAR type. I do.
I'm still trying to figure out the coding, but I will be updating that area, and included will be a STAR ID field.

Saw that fog and drizzle icon a lot in the XL days, because KPIT reported fog and drizzle a lot.

I am currently exploring several ways to improve the side area of people's profiles in topic-view (the area including the cable company, channel number, etc). Stay tuned for details. :)

Nice job on the theme, Tyler!

Update:  I spotted one minor error in the theme when I view the board guidelines.  I end up seeing the link chain of "TWC Today/TWC Classics Forums » Board Guidelines » Board Guidelines" repeated twice.  Someone just needs to delete that duplication on the board guidelines page.  Thanks!
I see what you mean, but I can't seem to find the error. I'll keep  looking.

PS: Might I suggest making the "no new posts" image a lighter shade of gray? It's a bit confusing, making me think there's new posts when there aren't, as only the bottom part of it changes when there's new posts.

That's an easy fix. I'll add it to my list.
