General Discussion / Re: Tim Russert Dead

This is a shocker. I really enjoyed his political coverage, more so than most other reporters.  :(

Also, no offense, but out of respect, can we rename this topic to something like "Tim Russert Dies at age 58," or "Time Russert Passes Away?" The current title seems to shout and whatnot. Just a thought... thanks.

Everything Else TWC / Breaking News: Time Warner Drops TWC Bid

Time Warner Withdrawals bid for The Weather Channel
http://tvdecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/13/time-warner-withdraws-bid-for-weather-channel/

A group led by NBC Universal now appears likely to acquire The Weather Channel, after Time Warner Inc. withdrew its bid for the channel on Friday.

Time Warner, which owns CNN and other news and information outlets, stepped away from the bidding due to price, according to an executive close to the transaction who refused to be identified because they were not authorized to speak about the negotiations. Bids were due Friday at noon, according to Reuters, which first reported Time Warner’s decision.

NBC Universal and two private equity firms, the Blackstone Group and Bain Capital, had submitted a bid of about $3.5 billion including debt, The New York Times reported on May 31.

Last week John Martin, the chief financial officer of Time Warner, said that a combination of CNN and The Weather Channel would give the company “a very, very interesting cross-platform play.” In conversations with Wall Street analysts, he has emphasized the need for “price discipline” in the bidding. Time Warner was said to be especially interested in Weather.com and the channel’s production facilities near Atlanta.

The Weather Channel, one of the premiere cable channel brands, is owned by Landmark Communications.

NBC could merge The Weather Channel with its upstart weather venture, NBC Weather Plus, and share some news resources with the channel.

The Weather Channel is the leading brand of weather information on television, reaching 95 million households and averaging an audience of 234,000 households at any given time. NBC Weather Plus is a name for a number of services, including a 24-hour network sponsored by local stations, a Web site, and short weather updates for NBC’s cable channels. Weather Plus has not yet turned a profit and is perceived as faltering.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: Comcast Sucks.

Shadyjay - we experienced the same problem.

Earlier this year, my great grandmother, 89, who lives in an old-age home in Penn Hills, lost all the channels she watches. See, she had the basic package, which has about 18 channels, and ran her about $14.99/month, and that price hasn't changed since Comcast took over AT&T Broadband years ago. Then, all of a sudden, she, along with the other older folks in her home, got a message stating they would be loosing EWTN (religious channel), along with QVC and HSN. Now, every person in her building is GLUED to and LIVES OFF OF EWTN, as well as QVC and HSN. They also removed the TV Guide Network and MSNBC. All these channels were moving to the 150s, which require subscribers to rent a digital box to get them, as well as the Digital Classic level of service... which many residents can't afford. So, by removing 5 channels, they were still able to increase the price of basic cable to $19.99.

We contacted the PA Attorney General's office, but they said the claim was pretty much useless, so we let it go.

In the end, the building she lives in ended up subscribing to the digital classic level itself, so non-affording residents could watch Daily Mass on EWTN down in the general sitting area on the TV in that room. Very nice of them to do that.

Shows what ASS HOLES Comcast are. They take channels away but raise the price.  :furious:

Since when was TWCT a franchise? And as stated be CE, who cares?

Sorry for the double post, but i'm going to sleep right now. I will see you here tomorrow. But for now, Bye.
Thank you for issuing a good-bye statement sir. However, for the record, we don't really care. Thanks.

Comcast all of a sudden early last year began using EAS for EVERY weather alert. Winter Wx Advisories, Severe Tstm Warnings, etc. There was an uproar, to say the least. People called news stations, they did reports on it; people wrote to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Pittsburgh Tribune Review, they talked about it, etc. People even left messages for the Pittsburgh NWS office, prompting them to release a statement online and on NOAA Weather Radio stating those messages were directly from Comcast, not them. Yet, it took Comcast MONTHS to get rid of them. It was then changed back to normal, only Tornado Warnings are shown (weather-wise).

The biggest problem was, they would show too many counties, even on smaller headends. For example, at the Penn Hills headend, we'd see warnings for counties 60-70 miles away (Greene, Fayette), which are totally unnecessary, seeing as how our headend served ONE county. Mother :censored: s, always trying to find a way to upset customers.  :furious:

I'm having a Youtube problem... this hasn't happened until today. See, in FF, my homepage looks like the attached image, no subscription videos, etc. But, in IE, it looks fine. Anyone know how to diagnose this?

Well they are supposed to be for weather warnings, right? In which case I have not seen it for several years.
And civil emergencies, child abductions, etc. But, they are tested either overnight or in the early afternoon on a weekly basis.

We never get 'em. Period. I don't think we even have an EAS system anymore.
Yes, they do. It's a federal law.

If he was, it is good practice for him. His first time on-air sing it, correct?
