General Discussion / Where in the world have you been?
« on: May 26, 2012, 07:13:19 PM »
Recently, there has been a lot of talk in The Front Porch about where you have traveled to, so I decided that a new thread would be fitting. Use this link to create your own map.

Here's mine:

I'll soon be traveling through Virginia to get to Washington, DC for a school trip this October.

General Discussion / Crazy Person at Local Radio Station
« on: May 15, 2012, 05:08:44 PM »
LIVE RECORDED AUDIO: http://snd.sc/JHemNe

I listened to most of this unfold live on the radio this morning on my way to school

In case you don't fee like listening to the full thing, here's a rundown of what happened on The Q this morning as I was listening live.

DJs CJ and Alexis Grace (yes, the one from American Idol...she's a local radio DJ) were talking about the radio stalker story from Tampa, FL.

Producer Ty began to tell a story about how in college, he was assigned a lab partner for the semester. He had to skip class one day for a job assignment (broadcasting live from an event). When the event was over, he had 40+ missed calls from his lab partner, Christina, wondering why he missed class. The next day, after his assignment, he was working as a DJ at the station, and when his shift was over, he went outside to find Christina leaning on his car waiting for him. (He told this story live this morning).

A few months past, and we come to today, when they covered the Tampa stalker story. They began asking for live call-ins with comments on the story. The person that handles calls told the DJs that there was an urgent call on Line 2. CJ picked up, and it was Christina, who had been listening live. She was emotional because they called her a stalker. BUT WAIT!  That's not all! She tells them that she is parking in their parking lot, and Ty needs to come out to see her!

They send Ty out with his cell phone on so we can hear what's going on. They get in a verbal argument, and Alexis Grace is sent out to break it up. She screams, drives off, and they start playing songs again. Everything seems to be back to normal.

A few seconds later, during a break, Christina comes back with a brick, and smashes the window in their studio. (Their microphones are kept on and recording, even during breaks, so they are able to play the window smash back over the air).

What do you think about this? Crazy or what?

General Discussion / GoPro HD Hero - FOR SALE
« on: April 01, 2012, 06:15:27 PM »
I don't know if I'll get in trouble for posting this, but anyway...I'm selling my GoPro HD Hero camera. I've had it for 2 months and used it only about 5 times. It includes everything that came with it (SD/HD Composite Cables, USB Cable, Camera, and the shell) minus the waterproof backing (the non-waterproof backing is included). I'm asking $125+shipping. I'll only accept PayPal because that is the quickest and easiest thing for me. Plus, it is directly connected to my eBay account, so I can easily purchase what I am saving up for (Sony Cybershot TX-10). Post a reply or PM me for more information.

General Discussion / RIP Andy Gabrielson - Storm Chaser
« on: February 04, 2012, 09:12:46 PM »
From findthetornado.com -

Some very sad news to report tonight. Our storm chaser and personal friend Andy Gabrielson was killed in a car accident on I-44 in Oklahoma this afternoon. This was confirmed to me by his dad Greg via phone about 6:30 this evening.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gabrielson family and our extended storm chaser family as well.

-Kory Hartman

According to recent news updates, Andy was killed when another car was going west in the eastbound lane, resulting in a head-end accident. For fellow storm chasers, we are turning on our GPS spotter location blips tonight in memory of Andy. RIP.

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Forecast Error
« on: December 29, 2011, 04:05:20 PM »
Hey there STAR Team,

I see you've changed the CC sites as requested. Thanks!

However, on the "Today's Forecast" map, there is no temperature or icon being shown. This has been happening since early this afternoon. I don't know if it has to do with the CC change. This is not affecting the "Tonight's Forecast" map, so maybe it will go away at 4:00 when the products switch over.

Everything Else TWC / Mike Bettes' Controversy
« on: November 16, 2011, 07:08:14 PM »
As many of you know, last week, Mike Bettes discussed storm chasers getting too close to tornadoes on Open Mike, mainly focusing on Andy Gabrielson's car flipping over in a storm (tried to turn around in the mud and flipped into a ditch...nothing to do with the storm or tornado). This is making lots of people, chasers in particular, calling Mike a hypocrite because of how close he got to tornadoes on Vortex2. According to Mike's Facebook page, he will be having a Viewer's Rebuttal on WCL tonight where viewers can voice their opinions on the controversey. What do all of you think about this? I will be posting updates as Mike discusses this.

Note to Administration - Feel free to move the topic, I really couldn't find a suitable place.

General Discussion / Space Junk Headed For Earth - Impact Imminent
« on: September 19, 2011, 08:37:12 PM »

This artist's conceptual image provided by NASA shows the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS.

It looks like a giant piece of biscotti covered with gold foil and pipe cleaners. But it's really a decommissioned weather satellite the size of a bus that NASA says will probably fall to Earth by Friday, oh, give or take a day.

Most of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (or UARS) will burn up as the spacecraft plunges into the lower atmosphere, but some pieces may survive and strike the ground nearly anywhere between 57 north latitude and 57 south latitude. That's pretty much anywhere on the continents and oceans. Antarctica appears to be safe.

In its risk assessment, NASA says the possibility of somebody getting hit by something is small, but it estimates 26 "potentially hazardous objects" from the UARS may survive the flaming return, and not all of them will be lightweight.

Washington Post blogger Joel Achebloch says this is the biggest piece of space debris to come back to earth in 30 years and it should create a big light show. If only they knew where to look. This week, NASA will start offering daily briefings on the satellite's position.

The bloggers at Space.com remind everyone that most of the Earth is covered with water, so chances are greater that space debris will plunge into an ocean. It's hard to predict where and when, because the UARS's orbit is falling a lot faster than people expected. Solar activity is blamed. This warms up the atmosphere and increases drag on the satellite, cutting its flight shorter.

NASA says the UARS blasted into space in 1991 aboard the space shuttle Discovery. It aided scientists studying the Earth's ozone layer, and other aspects of the planet's upper atmosphere. (HT: Bill Chappell)

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / MAJOR Weatherscan Glitch
« on: August 17, 2011, 07:32:35 AM »
I woke up this morning to find that Weatherscan had gone nuts, once again. This time around, Weatherscan is jumpy. Meaning that every few seconds the video and the music will freeze, and then it will try to catch up with itself. This is not the case with any other channels, including TWC. This leads me to believe that it is a Weatherscan issue.

While I was typing this, the music and narration completely disappeared, and the video is still really laggy.

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Minor Misspelling
« on: August 04, 2011, 09:53:42 AM »
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for my area. During the LF, when it gets to the "Severe T-Storm Watch" tab and goes through the "Includes ____, ____, and ____ counties until ___ __". DeSoto county is included in the watch, so it shows in the tab. DeSoto is misspelled as "De Soto" with an unnecessary space. It should be simply "DeSoto".

Thanks!

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / WeatherScan
« on: July 29, 2011, 11:21:02 AM »
Hey there STAR Team,

I don't really watch WeatherScan that often, but upon tuning in today, I noticed something.

This is the lineup:
Memphis>Golf>Memphis>Travel>Airport>Memphis>Health>Garden>Golf>Radar>Travel

I noticed that on most Weatherscan Units that there are multiple cities, while ours just repeats Memphis over and over. Was this requested by our headend, or could it be changed? If it can be changed, can Germantown, West Memphis, and Southaven be added? This way it will match up with our LDL.

I also noticed that there are 2 airports, Memphis International and McKellar Sipes Regional Airport, in the Airport segment, but only Memphis International is featured on the Airport "Now" scroll at the bottom of the screen. Is it possible to add McKellar Sipes Regional Airport to that scroll?

Also, sorry for all of the recent request that I have been posting. :itsok:

Thanks in advance STAR Team. I realize if this request can not be fulfilled.
