My AP Chinese test is tomorrow.

I was a linguistics major, but even I wouldn't have dared tackle the Chinese language.  My congratulations!
Thanks! :)

I hope they don't do the same thing with The Middle. I know ratings on that show have slipped in the last year or two.
For now, there's very little chance of it being cancelled. It's their 2nd-highest rated sitcom after Modern Family. In fact, there's already been a syndication deal set.

I don't think the launch of a new show would have anything to do with a new direction for TWC, unless it was something radically different.

Happy Endings
My sister and I were watching the same thing yesterday. It was our first time watching it. We already love the show. Too bad it doesn't have much of a chance at survival when it comes to ratings. Not to mention ABC gave it the Friday night death slot. :/

Right now, I'm watching How I Met Your Mother.

Last night was the first time I've seen it, it's a funny show imo, but it seems to be one of those underdog shows that's having a really hard time gaining steam. From what I've read ABC is very invested in this show, but the move to Fri nights is a little suspicious unless they think it has a better chance to build up an audience w/o too much competition compared to any other night in the work week.

EDIT: Come to think of it, this show would probably fit better on a cable network than on a major network if it's averaging 3 mil. viewers. Maybe TBS or Comedy Central? TBS picked up Cougartown from ABC after it got cancelled just like TNT picked up Southland after NBC canned it. It could happen.
I've heard that suggestion being thrown around, but I'm not sure that TBS would want to pick it up, since it would make them look like a dumping ground for failed ABC sitcoms. For the sake of the fans, I hope it gets picked up somewhere.
USA is interested in picking up the show.

General Discussion / Re: TV Shows & Movies that Haven't/Won't Age Well

Even I Love Lucy has elements to it that simply will not work now.  Of course, the show is a timeless classic and always will be, but... the elements of "men are the earners and women are the spenders," women can cheer themselves up just by buying a new hat, and it's the role of the husband to discipline the wife have gone completely out the window sixty years later.  Just imagine a sitcom today in which the husband actually spanks the wife to discipline her!!  Back then, it was considered funny - Lucy was acting like a child and Ricky disciplined her like one.  Today, there's just no way that kind of humor would work on a modern sitcom... unless it was directly parodying I Love Lucy.
Not to mention when they made fun of Ricky's accent. It was funny, and it wasn't done in a mean-spirited way, but it would probably seem racist to the more sensitive audiences. Also, slapstick and physical comedy aren't done all that much in modern sitcoms anymore. Even then, I Love Lucy is my favorite show. :)

General Discussion / TV Shows & Movies that Haven't/Won't Age Well
« on: April 04, 2013, 12:41:20 AM »
I wanted to make this topic because the subject is something I've been thinking about quite a bit lately. "Not aging well" can take on various meanings, like jokes not being understood by modern audiences, situations totally irrelevant to modern society, or the source material simply not being taken seriously anymore. I think there are even more examples you people can think of. So basically, as the title says, what hasn't aged well, and what modern works do you think won't age well?

One example I can think of is shows or movies that are over-reliant on pop culture references or topical humor. Granted, there are some exceptions, like the Simpsons, SNL, etc. But I don't think audiences 10, or even 5, years from now will get "ermahgerd" jokes, like the one that was made in an episode of 2 Broke Girls.

You may not agree with me, but I'm just wondering what people here think.
