Programming and Graphics / ATTN: Severe Weather
« on: June 08, 2008, 03:04:43 AM »
Dear Severe Weather,

For the sake of The Weather Channel, please only occur on weekdays, not weekends.

Thank you very much for your cooperation,

Steve

OCMs & Personalities / Really?
« on: June 07, 2008, 02:11:26 AM »

Lisa Mozer and Rich Johnson in 2003? I always thought Lisa left after her EEWC stint with Dave. When did she finally stop being a fill-in and leave the network?

Everything Else TWC / Can somebody explain the thinking behind this?
« on: June 05, 2008, 04:14:39 PM »
Just a few seconds ago, they brought in reporter Julie Martin at the Expert Desk to interview the Storm Prediction Center. Why would they bring in a reporter for this? Wouldn't having a meteorologist do the interview with the SPC make a lot more sense?

OCMs & Personalities / Jen Carfagno - Your First Outlook co-anchor
« on: June 05, 2008, 07:08:47 AM »
I think we can say it safely now, Jen Carfagno has finally gotten an anchor spot after over 7 years on TWC. Jeff Morrow also made a surprise mid-week return to the show, revealing that there will be no separate Travel Analyst; Jen will continue with those duties, as well.

IMO, only having two OCMs on FO kind of hurts the format of the show. The show had a "bigger" feel to it with a team of three. Now with two anchors, it seems like just another show in many aspects, although it does still retain its special, unique features.

Everything Else TWC / Something interesting I found...

I'm sure Hillary Andrews would beg to differ with numbers 4 and 8. :P

Look at the power plan. It speaks for itself, doesn't it?

Everything Else TWC / New Graphics for all shows
« on: June 02, 2008, 04:06:41 AM »
First Outlook has started, and they're using new graphics. IMO, the opener is kind of short, but the presentation is still impressive.

All shows are also using the new HD style maps and the new HD radar system. Regional forecast maps now incorporate the precip colors and the maps on one screen so that's a plus. All map presentations are being done with Viz|Weather.

First Outlook is now the "full" edition of the show for all three hours.

Lower thirds are still the old ones with the logos removed.

More updates to come.

TWC and your Cable Company / Let me get something straight.
« on: June 02, 2008, 03:27:13 AM »
I just thought of this. If you have cable and get TWC HD, you're seeing the exact same national feed that I'm seeing on DirecTV until the HD STAR launches, right? Doesn't that mean that people watching TWC HD via cable won't get dual-feed severe weather updates unless they switch over to the SD feed? If so, that's really great for TWC's marketing, especially with the *huge* HD launch only hours away.

IMO, the best solution would be to put an end to the dual-feed stuff and start preempting nationally more often. People with satellite and people who have earlier STARs are also getting screwed. Do you seriously think the IntelliStar is available in all of these smaller towns in tornado alley where tornadoes generally hit? I don't think so.

Everything Else TWC / TWC has started pillar boxing 4:3 programming
« on: May 29, 2008, 07:07:12 AM »
Starting with today's YWT, TWC has started pillar boxing SD programming on the HD channel. IMO, it's kind of annoying. I *hate* pillar boxing. It distracts from the program and just rubs in the fact that it's not HD.

Programming and Graphics / New schedule to come June 2nd?
« on: May 27, 2008, 04:26:35 AM »
Since I get the schedule a week in advance on DirecTV, I decided to check in on the schedule for June 2nd, and as it turns out, the schedule is looking a little different; apparently long-form is taking a step back and being relegated to FFN/ICHT at 2 PM ET and 3 AM ET. Apparently Abrams & Bettes will become a two hour show from 7-9, EE will run in its usual slot, and Rich & Sharon will "do that" an hour earlier at 11 PM ET. EEWC will still run for two hours and be rebroadcast at 1 AM ET to make way for the aforementioned FFN/ICHT block at 3 AM ET. Apparently nothing will change for the weekends.

TV Guide also confirms this new lineup and shows the same lineup for the week afterward. Why they wouldn't air HD long-form when they're trying to promote TWC|HD, however, is beyond me and also casts a slight shadow of a doubt as to whether or not FFN/ICHT would really air every day.

Everything Else TWC / Just caught a new Hurricane Season 2008 ad
« on: May 26, 2008, 07:43:55 PM »
From the glimpse I caught, it looks disgustingly Fox News-ish. Way too flashy and cluttered; I'm not liking it.

Everything Else TWC / Fix the set. - please. - pretty please.
« on: May 23, 2008, 05:14:27 AM »
Today as First Outlook begins, we now see that two of the three lights above the big backdrop have burned out since EEWC, which, in fact, might have been the cause of the final two segments of EEWC to be disrupted.

I know they don't have much time left on the set, but some some shows ought to still be there during the summer months, and the set is starting to look worse and worse by the week as lights continue to burn out and not be repaired. I know TWC probably didn't want to have to do any further repairs on Studio 1A, but at some point, they need to buckle down and just do the needed repairs. The set is starting to look horrible.

Local Forecast / Rollout of HD-style maps on the satellite LF
« on: May 21, 2008, 01:18:25 PM »
Well folks, in a surprise move, TWC started rolling out the new HD-style maps for the SD satellite LF this morning during Day Planner. I must say, the new maps are a nice fresh change to the somewhat stale appearance of the satellite LF. The Intellistar could really use this package.

Videos to come later.

This is a video from early Tuesday morning where Sunday night's EEWC tap played during the LF, followed by Trammell for the rest of the LF
