For the end of Dr. Steve Lyons's Tropical Updates for the year on Wednesday, Paul and Jim decided to do a funny series of skits involving putting Dr. Lyons in a box for the off-season...

Everything Else TWC / New Weekly Planner maps
« on: October 21, 2008, 11:52:36 AM »
Today, TWC launched some asinine Weekly Planner maps for First Outlook that focus on only the areas east of the Mississippi River, and YWT launched a version of the planner that makes the maps of the whole country almost impossible to see, with only the precip map for the east of the Mississippi being enlarged.

Chris Hoitsma is getting feedback about this right away; this is pretty much the stupidest idea I've seen in a long time.

Local Forecast / Ad I saw... Local on the 8s on DISH?
« on: October 20, 2008, 02:03:41 AM »
I saw an ad tonight and last night featuring Jim Cantore claiming that DISH has an actual Local on the 8s in addition to the interactive feature. Is this true, or it is still just the interactive feature?

Everything Else TWC / Major TWC problems - morning of 10/16/08
« on: October 16, 2008, 04:22:51 AM »
This morning, I went to tune in to First Outlook just before I went to sleep, but boy, I was in for a surprise!

When I turned on the TV, TWC was airing a recorded HD LF on the SD feed from some random Saturday in the recent past ("tomorrow" was displayed as Sunday in the 5-day forecast); immediately after this LF, it transitioned right into recorded Forecast Earth. (with the HD logo displayed underneath the national LDL, which was on the entire time) Based on this, the recording must have either been from the evening hours on a recent Saturday or even from EEWC from a Saturday back in September when Forecast Earth still followed EEWC. After a few seconds of Forecast Earth played, there was a hard cut to the live First Outlook teaser, but after a few seconds, commercials started playing, then after a few seconds, it cut back to live FO, then back to commercials, then back to FO. Finally once they got into the studio after the opener, the feed cut back to commercials one last time until things returned to normal.

After the first FO segment, the commercials only ran for one minute, causing the LF to start at :07. As of right now, the schedule is still off-track by one minute.

Yeah, I thought that time in May where we jumped back to the previous night's EEWC as bad, but here we jumped back to a recording from anywhere between 5 and 26 days ago. O_o

I've got it all recorded, so maybe tomorrow we can analyze the forecast data in the LF and figure out just what day this was from.

Programming and Graphics / Your Weather Today - times a-changin'
« on: October 10, 2008, 07:20:12 AM »
Here is a topic for us to discuss all of the changes going on with Your Weather Today as Marshall prepares to retire within the next month or so.

Today, Friday, October 10th, Nicole Mitchell is filling in for Marshall with Kelly Cass doing Travel. This comes after Bill Keneely has hosted the past two days and Wednesday-Friday of last week. Kevin Robinson has hosted the show Monday and Tuesday of both this week and last.

If Bill is off today, I can understand the sudden shift in the anchors for today, but if he's on Day Planner, then I'll start suspecting Nicole as an anchor candidate and be further led to believe that this is all some big tryout. I guess we'll find out soon enough; I'll be recording Day Planner while I sleep. :P

I wonder if Marshall will finally begin his run to the finish next week...

Contributions / DirecTV LF clips
« on: October 09, 2008, 07:44:31 AM »
Now that I'm back at home, I finally get to watch a somewhat real LF on my own TV. ^_^

Here's a clip of the two minute LF; I never realized that they had a Regional 3-day Forecast; that's a pretty neat feature.

Here's a 1:30 LF preceded by me messing with the interactive feature; notice how you can view regional radars from all across the U.S. by using the arrow buttons. I still don't get why they don't put the current sky conditions on the interactive feature, though.

That's what it looks like! (thanks to the control room sourcing the wrong camera last night)

So, what is that on the floor? There appears to be a platform for the couch (that hasn't been there since day one), but what is that yellow-lit thing? Is it a small table or something?

Everything Else TWC / Weekly Planner maps have precip labeled again
« on: September 30, 2008, 05:23:09 PM »
This is the first hour of TWC I've watched today, so I just noticed that they brought back the plain white text labels for the precip that have been gone since the HD relaunch. Not a bad move, I suppose.

Everything Else TWC / Sunrise Weather is real! FOR SURE! (as of 10/4/08)
« on: September 27, 2008, 04:33:40 AM »
At the bottom of this hour, they played the opener for Sunrise Weather, which used the same music as the WO opener. In the studio, however, the LCD screen still said "Weekend Outlook", and Ray Stagich also called it Weekend Outlook.

I wonder where this is going to go from here...

Does it go anything like this?
