Everything Else TWC / Re: TWC website criticism
« on: October 22, 2014, 08:30:37 AM »
Are you saying I'm wrong for saying false headlines?  Maybe I should have said misleading. Because they are. I agree with that article.
I think what's going on is that some people don't like the headlines that try to capture the viewers attention, they have a problem with it? So what. Everybody has an opinion, not worth fighting about.

So news is more important than a tornado warning? this happened yesterday on WUWA

Al Roker:" We're going to get to that tornado warning that's just west of Washington, DC but i want you to get quickly caught up with this morning's headlines"

I guess you think News headlines are more important than people's lives TWC
That show is very complicated to produce. They have to make sure that the taped parts are taped properly, and if they despensed with the headlines there would have been a gap in playback.

Dumping a taped segment is hardly a chore, having done it numerous times. You fill time on-air with the warning update, advice and analysis.

The warning wouldnt have been relevent for the repeat of the taped show. But I see where you were coming from if the program were absolutely live.

LOT8's is not getting a "relaunch."  "Refresh" is a better word.

I don't like the conecpt of dual feed. TWC says they'll only cut into longform programming for areas that are impacted by severe weather; but that only works for people who have cable and are served by a local Intellistar/Intellistar 2 JR/IntelliStar 2. What about those who have satellite, and may have limited or no internet access, and cannot view the live stream on Youtube? I would definitely change the channel to a more credible local station if that were the case. There are too many flaws with the dual feed system; and the severe weather cut-ins should be aired nationwide.
From what I hear: work is being done with Sattelite providers to provide this local dual feed.

  • There will be a push to make TWC more interactive, eventually completely removing the utilization of Chroma walls and using more walls monitors ad plasma's, as seen in the recent Severe coverage by using the large AMHQ video wall for the MAX weather graphics.

The only problem I have with that is the large video wall would work better as one screen, not a group of smaller screens. I find the lines distracting - and sometimes you can see how one screen isn't quite calibrated with the next, leading to some color variations.

But this is nit-picking, I imagine many viewers don't even notice.
Yea that was a concern raised before that wall was even debuted. There are ways the graphic team has that make this look great. You should see it before that is done, everyone would notice, so even though you may nto see it, it's actually an improvement

TWC seem to be taking a good interest in Typhoon Hudhud, even forecasting it...
Oh well, it seems to be the only exciting weather event right now.
Who knows? Maybe viewers may have family there, major weather is covered no matter where it is.

Everything Else TWC / The Forward Direction of TWC

Alright. I am creating this thread to clear up the confirmed future of TWC, this is going to be completely made out of the information that I can share publicly.

The Weather Channel - Late 2014 Early 2015
Many of you are speculating that there will be a relaunch this year, this isn't the case. It's going to be a very small, "blink and you will miss" it kind of changes.  Here is what I can say about that:
  • There will be a push to make TWC more interactive, eventually completely removing the utilization of Chroma walls and using more walls monitors ad plasma's, as seen in the recent Severe coverage by using the large AMHQ video wall for the MAX weather graphics.
  • More efforts will be made to make the Local On The 8's flow more smoothly and remove some of the common glitches around now - that's all I can say there.

The Studio
  • Currently AMHQ shares the same large studio as Weather Center Live. There are some plans to extend that studio a bit and use it more extensively for both shows.

LFP
There are plans to livestream hyper local severe coverage on Youtube, which means if you have family in a severe area that TWC has done a local cut-in on, this will eventually be streamed online.

Let me know if you have any questions. I think I've cleared most of the rumors up.

Any more news on the relaunch?

Not that I can say publicly, but stay tuned.  Relaunch is a strong word.
I thought we were using that word last week when we were discussing this last week in the LF thread. I'm wondering more about the timeframe. Still middle of Oct?

Late october, possible early Nov.

Everything Else TWC / Re: Weather Channel for Sale
« on: October 07, 2014, 12:26:07 PM »
Well this could be interesting. The article says that the TV network could be sold separately from the weather data side of the business. I wonder what this means.

Maybe the weather channel could become a franchise...
When the UK had it's own weather channel (Yep, we did, with British OCM's and forecasts the lot) it was a franchise, the station wasn't produced by NBC or back then TWC itself, but the IPW, the commercial arm of the Met Office.
I need to do more research into the UK version. Apparently it too was meant to have local forecasts. Not quite sure how that would work as it was a satellite service... Plus we only have 3 or 4 cable providers nationally...

Oh well...

That's true
"The Weather Channel" is a brand of "The Weather Company"
so "The Weather Company" could sell "The Weather Channel."

Really like this version of the TWC logo
That is a sign of things to come, but that's about all I can say.  I like it too.
It sounds like you can't give details which is fine, I don't want you in trouble.  However can you at least tell us how close we are to that logo?

Well, I can't give specifics but you won't have to wait TOO long.
