re: Spyware Protect 2009...

Run this:  C:\windows\system32\regsvr32 /u iehelper.dll
Then delete the iehelper.dll file (I believe it's in your C:\Windows).
Then run Spybot Search and Destroy to clear it out.
Wish I'd done that earlier... I think I had another virus in there as well, but anyways the virus screwed up my system so bad that everything was running horribly slow, and most of the time it would freeze when I would try to log on to Windows. So I just basically said "screw this", and I'm now reformatting that machine. <_<

I think the problem last time is that I didn't get all of my security updates. This time, after it's reformatted I'm IMMEDIATELY going to Windows Update (though I'll get McAfee reinstalled first) and get every single update. It will take a while, as I'm going to have to go from XP SP1 to SP2 before SP3, I can't upgrade directly. But anyways I'm going to get my security updates done before I really do much of anything.

The virus appears to be gone now. I booted into safe mode and tried to look for the sysguard files, and none were found. I booted back into regular mode and the virus didn't come back.

Really!! I restored it back to 2 days before the virus came. Did you try that? I'm also surprise how you're having online access. Spyware Protect blocked IE. It even blocked google.
I'm using Firefox. :P

Yeah, that's exactly what I did, but it says it can't restore due to an error. Wish it would tell me what the error was.

I had that two weeks ago and Trend Micro wouldn't remove it. Do a system restore, that'll solve the issue. :)
System Restore didn't work; it failed.  :censored:

Any other ideas? :dunno:

Keep in mind that McAfee is supposedly the most pathetic in protection.
Actually, it's been quite good in the past.

Anyone know how to get rid of this stupid "Spyware Protect 2009" virus? McAfee says it got rid of it, but it's still there. The only thing I could find to get rid of it on Google was a program called "SpyNoMore", but of course, you have to buy the program for it to remove the virus. Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated.

Wow, apparently this episode of Surviving the Elements that's airing right now is using the 2003-2004 daytime lower thirds.

If you guys recall, back last February, my desktop computer quit working due to a bad power supply. Well, I swapped that machine out with another machine that I wasn't working. That quit recently, so I decided to get the other one fixed, because it would've been the easiest one to fix. Well, we took it into a local PC repair shop on Monday, and I just got it back today with a brand new power supply!

It's working good (although it makes a little noise) and I'm currently re-imaging it with the Recovery application.
