General Discussion / Re: The Pot Belly Stove

I strongly agree with you, Patrick. It's a shame too these days, that teachers only care about their salaries. Another thing that makes me upset is that the classes often teach students "to the test". The purpose for us to attend school is to learn. Should what we learn during 4 years in high school be wasted on a 4 hour SAT or ACT exam? We should be learning for the sake of knowledge, not test-taking.
It's also why people are failing state tests, because they expect everyone to know whats on it WHEN THEY NEVER LEARNED IT <_<

One of my last public school classes was my 8th grade science course, a class I will forever call a trainwreck.

-Teacher was the epitome of stress. I saw her recently at a Kohl's department store with a coffee cup in one hand, cell phone in another, and "I <3 SD" sweatshirt. Catchphrase? "Oh my lanta".
-An aide had to be added midyear. There were many struggling/troublemaking students, including one who's always had an unjustified grudge on me. There were almost always people sent to detention.
-We were behind enough that an entire unit on ecology and Darwinian principles had not been covered by the time we took the AIMS science exam (which included questions on them).
-I felt like I was in an insane asylum half the time.
-It was a RELIEF to leave that class. No, really. It actually made me feel bad emotionally.

That class, among other things, was the reason I decided to make the move to Catholic school.

At our middle school we were able to see the presidential inauguration live. We had a choice of CNN or MSNBC. The teacher in our class at the time chose MSNBC, and being a loyal MSNBC viewer, it felt kinda comforting to listen to Chris, Keith, and Rachel.

By the way, despite being a Cox market, we don't have the IS2 yet (Phoenix is #2 in Internet and telephone, so those are probably priorities, as well as the recent rollout of new guide software). We DO have TWC HD now and have had it for quite a while.

I know it isn't knocking on my door for a while...heck, TWC HD isn't even here yet (and Cox is preparing another wave of HD channel additions - no deal to get it yet?).

Cheryl Lemke apparently filled in for the weekend morning meteorologist on WXIA 11 Alive this morning, according to this poster:

Yeah, that's the general idea apparently. TWC has featured live shots from (and mentioned) KXAS many a time, so I am not at all surprised to see someone from that station coming on-board.
Well I would hope they are getting live reports from NBC affiliates and not CBS or ABC affiliates since after all they are owned by NBC.

I believe that when NBC took ownership, TWC discontinued any agreements with non-NBC affiliates.
I could have sworn I saw some ABC affiliate in the past but perhaps I was wrong.

There's only been one case I can think of on MSNBC (which is similar in policy) where they used a non-NBC affiliate: when the Binghamton, NY shootings happened, they used WBNG's resources. (WBNG is a CBS affiliate.)

But I've seen a mix of Big Fours on TWC in the past...I seem to remember either WSB or WGCL was used for an Atlanta report (even after the TWC buyout), and of course TWC had larger deals with WSB and WCBS in the past.

There's a good bet the other CSNs use it - SNY (New York) maybe, Philly, Bay Area, New England...

Bloomberg's current design is actually really nice and clean.

3 from me.

The only good things they have left are brand name, perceived quality, and Jim Cantore.

I get my weather from my friendly local meteorologist (who's been doing weather longer than TWC's been on, I think) and my weather alerts from an NWS RSS feed.

Keep in mind that Jackson hadn't had a formal relationship with the channel in a long time...surprised it's Jim Cantore and not Jim Cutler, really.

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Observation sites for weather bulletins
« on: June 08, 2010, 03:01:39 PM »
Earlier this week, we had several Excessive Heat Warnings which displayed on our LDL (22329 Cox Phoenix).

However, they are tagged with a unique observation site: "Alhambra" (the central Phoenix neighborhood). No other products use that site.

This has been reported by one other user as occurring on their IS in Pennsylvania - the weather bulletins have a unique observation site. (No STAR ID was made available.)

Everything Else TWC / Re: Has TWC lost its way?

Some of the "weather hype" has rubbed off on local TV in the last decade or so. One of my stations' weather departments here is called the "Desert Doppler 15 HD Forecast Center". Really.

That said, this is the reason I want in television: because downward spirals are alarming to me. TWC and all five of the stations here are no exception.

I wish I could go back to 1994 at times. Yeah, the technology sucked a bit, but television news was WAY more interesting.

There have been weather warnings for our area the past two days.

Oddly enough, they are tagged with an obs site of "ALHAMBRA" (the Phoenix neighborhood) while everything else is Phoenix, Phoenix Area, and Mesa.

Rest of the STAR seems normal, but...this is odd. Is it to make it appear first, perhaps, by giving it "A"?

Does it utilize dual-feed? If so, I bet it's because of the Penn Hills STAR, known for being a trial IS in the past.
