From Jen Carfagno's facebook page:

"OK...I am so excited! Just got word that I am going to Nashville to cover the CMT Music Awards next week! Beyond cool! Actually, it's going to be HOT...no end in sight for the heat!"

CMT's website says it's Wednesday June 8 at 8 PM Eastern.

"Mike Kelly oversees a cable network in nearly every one of the nation's 100-million cable homes and weather.com, a website with more than 40 million monthly visitors. Annual revenues top $500 million and 'digital offerings are going through the roof.'"

I like this part:

"People tune in, hear the forecast and go. How do you get them to stick around longer?

Time spent viewing is the challenge. When you tune into news, you want to find out what happened. Most people who check on weather are really doing it to support their lifestyle, so I think we have a big opportunity to move more toward lifestyle programming."

Thanks for posting that, hadn't seen it til now.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Peter Lik Joins The Weather Channel

I watched a bit of the 7 PM hour and saw the "pre-game" show, if you want to call it that. Not sure why Jen Carfagno was there. The promotion of this whole thing is so over-the-top, can't escape it with the commercials playing on other cable channels the past week or two.

They made modifications to the hardware of the STAR I and II (which became III). The layout of the information on each page was controlled at TWC, thus I don't think there's a way to say for sure which unit you're seeing based on the output (but a good guess based on the date/year).

They shared the same location/city tables for the latest observations and regional conditions for any given location. Keep in mind several people have have been tasked with working on those lists over the years, so I'm not sure that there was any specific system for selecting the locations.

My guess is proximity, but I've seen some latest observation pages that left me scratching my head. I've noticed that the latest observation and regional conditions pages were ordered from north to south before they were changed to alphabetical order in 1993. On the 4000's regional maps, it sounds like a select number of cities are entered into a database and from looking at recordings, a select number of map "snapshots" are used (locations in a given area share the same map).

Here's the 1998 lists. They used Trammell Starks exclusively from March to September in 1997 (don't have a list handy). The list provided by TWC for the 1st quarter was missing most of the songs on my list, as well as the 2nd quarter (they removed and added songs in March/April). The George Winston songs only played in late April/May from what I remember.

My understanding was that the cable companies sent back their old STAR units rebuilt when hardware modifications were necessary (thus becoming a STAR II or III). So, some of the units could of dated back to the beginning (1982).

From "The Improbable Rise of a Media Phenomenon"

"We discovered that our first WeatherSTARs were radiating energy in a way that interfered with the antenna's reception of Channel 2, we developed a way to eliminate the radiation leakage. And thus was invented STAR 2. Then, in 1985, the FCC decided to reduce the spacing between geosynchronous satellites to make room for more satellites. I'll skip the technical aspects of what this entailed for us - suffice it to say they were complicated. We enlisted the help of Wegener Communications in Atlanta and, at the cost of about $2 million, we figured out how to adjust the STAR so that it transmitted out localized weather data differently. And thus was invented STAR 3."

About the Channel 2 interference:

"After much investivation, Galumbeck and his colleagues discovered that although the WeatherSTAR conformed to FCC radiation standards in terms of what was escaping from the unit, the STAR was nevertheless energetically radiating outward through its sensors and wreaking havoc on Channel 2's VHF frequency. The Weather Channel engineers scrambled to seal up the STARs more effectively. THey also added a "doughnut" of ferrite beads - which helped absorb very high frequencies - to all the leads going into and out of the STARs."

I found this picture from 1982ish that has the original WeatherSTAR in it.

Has anyone actually seen the front of a 3000? The label on the unit at the bottom of this pic makes me think this is one (even though they are all out of service)

That was also used in the commercial in 1990.

I think he stopped coming on tv regularly around 1995.
