General Discussion / Special "Ace of Cakes" episode on Food Network
« on: August 28, 2008, 03:33:15 PM »
Hey guys, I thought I'd give a heads up to anyone I know here that may be interested in a great story.

Tonight (August 28th) at 10:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Food Network will show a brand-new episode of Ace of Cakes about two hockey fans that recently got married and had a unique wedding cake make just for them. It is in the shape of the Stanley Cup, the hardest trophy to win in all of sports.

What makes this special is how they met and that they went to such great length to make their wedding unforgettable.

I blogged about it last month if you want to check it out.

But I also have a favor to ask anyone here at TWC Today or at TWC Classics that has the ability to do this. Unfortunately I haven't been able to buy a new PC just yet and don't have a TV tuner. If any of you tune in to the show, would you be able to record it? The bride had been asking me and anybody else I post with a hockey forum we're a part of for help, but I thought I might be able to turn to one of you as a backup just in case. Please let me know if this is possible or if you can. I appreciate this if it ends up done and needed.

Hope you enjoy the show and let me know what you think of my blog entry and the episode!

General Discussion / Re: Gas prices in your area
« on: August 13, 2008, 12:05:05 PM »
New York State as a whole just dropped below the $4 mark yesterday, but obviously it won't last. At the moment, the average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in my state is right now at $3.985, 9th highest in the United States.

New York City is the 7th most expensive city in the entire country right now at $4.077. Anchorage, Alaska tops the list at $4.371 per gallon. But get this! I'm still paying between $4.20 to $4.45 per gallon depending on the gas station in Westchester County! That one gas station in Rye, New York is still charging an outrageous $4.69!

While those in the San Francisco Bay Area have it at least as bad if not a little worse, it's amazing how the surprising recent trend from the record high nationally of an average $4.11 per gallon on July 17th to yesterday's $3.85 has not have a real effect on me here. Be glad you don't live in New York City's nearby northern suburbs. It's ridiculous. Connecticut used to be more expensive than us, now they're slightly cheaper than we are.

It doesn't help my state has a serious budget deficit and won't reduce taxes, including those on gas. New York State has among the very highest income tax rates in the entire country and it isn't something for me to brag about.

Your Local Weather / Re: Minneapolis-St. Paul weather
« on: August 13, 2008, 11:45:35 AM »
After a cool mid-August morning and below average readings of late, it is expected to be a considerably warmer day today.

Following the lift of fog from within the last hour or two when a Dense Fog Advisory was in effect, fair weather has taken over across much of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Most of the entire Upper Midwest region of the country has little or no wind at all in all locations.

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms late this afternoon and into tonight as high temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid 80s. It will remain primarily pleasant for the reminder of the week.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,

General Discussion / Re: Word of caution for Facebook users
« on: August 12, 2008, 06:10:29 PM »
I thought I'd post this for my fellow members here at TWC Today who are a part of Facebook.

Apparently there is yet another problem with Facebook's security to be aware of and to take precautions. Click on the link below for the entire article.

PC World's news page (August 7):
Malicious hackers use Facebook Wall for malware attack

Facebook users are being targeted by malicious hackers through postings on the popular Wall section of the social-networking site, security company Sophos said Thursday.

The Wall, a core feature of Facebook profile pages, is used by members to leave each other messages that in addition to text can also contain photos, videos, music and links to Web sites.

The malware attack comes in the form of a Wall message supposedly posted by a friend that urges members to click on a link to view a video on a Web site supposedly hosted by Google, said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos.

Your Local Weather / Re: Houston Weather
« on: August 05, 2008, 03:25:00 PM »
Not exactly the most threatening weather conditions, but Tropical Storm Edouard is dumping some rain and providing minimal windy conditions in Houston and across extreme southeastern Texas today as the storm moves westward inland.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in League City, Texas on August 5, 2008

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING is in effect.

Areas affected...  this statement recommends actions to be taken by persons in the following counties or marine areas:

Chambers County
Galveston County
Harris County
Liberty County

Please listen to NOAA Weather Radio or go to weather.gov on the internet for more information about these additional hazards.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect through late tonight.

Tropical storm force winds may result in minor wind damage this afternoon. Newly planted trees and shrubs may be uprooted if not secured properly. Some small twigs will separate from trees. Residents should move unfastened items such as garbage cans and deck furniture indoors.

The primary threat from Edouard will be heavy rainfall and flooding.

Minor coastal flooding is expected through mid afternoon along the eastern shoreline of Galveston Bay and along Bolivar Peninsula. Tide levels of 3 to 4½ feet are occurring in this area. At 1:15 PM, the tide level at Rollover Pass was at 4.1 feet or about 3½ feet above mean lower low water. These water levels will slowly subside this afternoon and evening.

Sustained winds of 25 to 35 MPH with gusts of 35 to 45 MPH will occur at times this afternoon. These winds will be confined to northeast Harris and Liberty counties in close proximity to the center of Edouard and also along the shore of Galveston Bay. Elsewhere, generally west winds of 15 to 25 MPH are expected.

Winds are expected to diminish quickly to 10 to 20 MPH area wide by sunset.

Your Local Weather / Re: Dallas-Fort Worth weather
« on: August 04, 2008, 06:15:30 PM »
Triple digit heat continues to bake North Texas today as high temperatures in nearly all areas are above 100°. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport set a new daily record with its high temperature of 107° at 4:29 PM Central Daylight Time yesterday afternoon, breaking the old mark of 105° back in 1998.

Here are two weather statements from the National Weather Service concerning Dallas and Fort Worth.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, Texas on August 4, 2008

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect until 7:00 PM Central Daylight Time.

This Excessive Heat Warning includes the following counties in North Texas:
Collin County
Dallas County
Delta County
Denton County
Fannin County
Grayson County
Hopkins County
Hunt County
Kaufman County
Lamar County
Rains County
Rockwall County
Tarrant County
Van Zandt County

Dangerous summer heat will continue today. Afternoon high temperatures will range between 103° and 107°. These hot
temperatures combined with the humidity will produce heat index values near 110° during the late afternoon. In
addition, morning low temperatures will only fall into the lower 80s in urban areas and mid to upper 70s in outlying areas.

Persons involved in any outdoor activities are urged to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. Wear loose fitting and light colored clothing. Be sure to check on persons with health problems and the elderly as they are the most susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Never leave people or pets in an enclosed vehicle even for a short time as temperatures can quickly rise to life threatening levels in just a few minutes!

AN AIR POLLUTION WATCH - LEVEL ORANGE is in effect through the end of tonight.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has issued a Level Orange Air Pollution Watch for the Dallas-Fort Worth area for Monday, August 4, 2008.

Atmospheric conditions are expected to be favorable for producing high levels of ozone air pollution in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Monday. Ozone levels could reach the level Orange (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups) category.

Elevated concentrations of ozone can act as a lung irritant. Individuals with chronic lung disease such as asthma and emohysema as well as the elderly and young children are particularly sensitive to ozone and should attempt to avoid exposure. To avoid exposure, minimize exertion outdoors during the midday to early evening hours or stay indoors in an air-conditioned room during this time.

For more information on ozone, visit the TCEQ ozone data page (use lower case letters):

Your Local Weather / Re: Phoenix Weather
« on: August 01, 2008, 09:49:55 PM »
Just like it was back on June 22nd, the desert southwest region of the United States is expected to be roasting
once again with near record high temperatures. If those in North Texas, Oklahoma and elsewhere in the
southern Great Plains think they have it bad, they might want to see what it is like in Arizona today.

High temperatures this afternoon may reach the mid 110s in the Phoenix metropolitan area and western portions
of Arizona and with that, an Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for the next 24 hours.

The National Weather Service's Phoenix forecast office posted this weather page due to the extreme heat,
even for Arizona standards. Here is what the National Weather Service has issued:

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on August 1, 2008
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time on Saturday night.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix is continuing an Excessive Heat Warning for Maricopa County including
the greater Phoenix area and northwest and north central Pinal County. This Excessive Heat Warning is in effect
from today to 8:00 PM on Saturday.

Excessive heat with near record high temperatures are forecast today. It was a very warm night last night with the
minimum temperature near the all-time record high minimum temperature of 96° at Sky Harbor International Airport.
It is forecast to be at least a couple of degrees hotter today compared with yesterday.

Some forecast highs for today include 114° at Sky Harbor International Airport, 115° at Gila Bend and
113° at Coolidge. Saturday's highs are anticipated to be a few degrees lower, but still hot. Little in the way
of relief is anticipated during the overnight hours, with temperatures only bottoming out in the lower 90s
in the urban areas including Sky Harbor International Airport.

It would be wise to stay inside in an air-conditioned building today through Saturday. If you must work outdoors,
it would be wise to complete as much outdoor activity as possible in the early morning when the sun and heat
are less intense.

During periods of excessive heat, individuals can suffer heat-related illness when the body can no longer cool itself.

If you plan to be outside for an extended period of time in the afternoon or early evening, stay in the shade
as much as possible and drink abundant amounts of water. Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
If you wear a wide-brimmed hat, your head and body will be much cooler. Stop outdoor activities,
drink lots of water or other non-alcoholic beverages and if possible, spend more time in air-conditioned or
well-ventilated places.

Here is an update for you. Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix recorded their second highest all-time
daily minimum temperature this morning as it only got down to 95°
. Only one day in recorded history was it
higher and that was on July 15, 2003 when temperature bottomed out at 96°. This morning's low tied two
other days on record when it was 95° on August 12, 2003 and July 22, 2006. See this page for more details.

Also, less than two hours ago was when the temperature reached its high for today,
113° at 5:19 PM Mountain Standard Time
, just 3° short of the daily record of 116° in 1972.
The extreme heat is expected to back off by Monday.

PLEASE NOTE:
Even though it is dinner hour in Phoenix, I'm keeping the daytime forecast data so that in this rare instance,
we can compare the actual high temperatures with what was forecast. Also, Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona
did not issue their latest weather observations, so Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is being used for Mesa
on the metropolitan area weather maps instead.

Chris, can you dedicate this thread to a specific city or region in a state that isn't covered? This seems to be too broad of a coverage area given we have threads that do cover southeastern United States cities.

I know, for those of you that are from southern California, they're not surprised and used to being on guard
for these things.

Breaking news from Los Angeles... An earthquake shook southern California within the last 30 minutes.

Preliminary information has it at a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale and its epicenter about 30 miles
southeast of downtown Los Angeles, near the town of Chino Hills (located in San Bernandino County).

So far, if you want live local coverage... go to this link at KNBC-TV:

Jennifer is so f***ing hot!

Even my dad agrees!
Ya think? Damn straight she's f'ing hot.

By the way, seeing her in HD for the very first time this morning, there is no doubt in my mind that's she's pregnant. That nice outfit she wore today couldn't completely conceal her baby bump.
