Below normal temperatures and brisk winds are the perfect combination of a true autumn afternoon in the Big Apple.

Variable sky conditions can be found across the New York City metropolitan area with temperatures ranging from only the upper 40s to mid 50s for most locations. Winds are breezy, but only a few are above 20 MPH.

It is expected to remain cooler than average for the remainder of this week, but may briefly get into the 60s before Friday.

After nearly a chilly night during the overnight hours this morning, this afternoon will end up being the coolest we've seen in months. It's safe to say probably since April or May. With the Autumnal Equinox just within reach, the New York City metropolitan area is getting a fall preview today.

With beautiful skies overhead, temperatures are crisp and cool and very fall-like. Readings across the region are anywhere between the upper 50s to mid 60s at this hour and are expected to rise around 70° later today.

Temperatures are expected to moderate back to seasonable levels or even slightly above normal this weekend, but if you're gearing up for fall, today's your day.

Tropical Storm Ike is passing to the east of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area this afternoon and tonight and will provide some moderately rainy and breezy conditions from the storm's west side. Temperatures at this hour are primarily in the mid to upper 70s with a few spots at or above the 80° mark. Conditions will gradually improve as the weekend progresses. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect through Sunday morning.

This Flood Watch includes the following counties in Texas:

Tropical Storm Ike continues to move north through the southeastern portions of North Texas. Heavy rain is accompanying the storm and extends up to 100 miles from the center of circulation. Other rain bands extend up to 200 miles from the center of the circulation. Locations along and east of Interstate 35 east can expect 2 to 4 inches of rain with isolated higher amounts of up to 6 inches near the track of the storm center. The rain will be heavy at times falling at two inches per hour or more. This will cause rapid rises in creeks and streams as well as flooded roadways. Significant flash flooding is possible in the watch area. As Ike moves into Arkansas Saturday night, the potential for flash flooding will rapidly diminish but residual flooding will likely remain into Sunday.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding. You should monitor the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued for your area.


A WIND ADVISORY is in effect until 1:00 AM Central Daylight Time on Sunday morning.

Tropical Storm Ike is tracking through the eastern portions of North Texas, but its expansive wind field is producing strong winds across much of North Texas. When this BETA test was first run 9 days ago, the New York City metropolitan area was the first television market to have this done. That is at least to my knowledge.

This more metropolitan view will work better as weather scan HD then LOT8

I agree. But remember, this isn't the final product, so we shall see what changes (if any) are made between now and the official release of the completed HD STARs across the country.

Hurricane Ike is set to make landfall within this hour near Galveston, Texas with at least 100 MPH winds.

Just as was the case in the surrounding region of New Orleans good number of reporting sites in southeastern Texas (including Ellington Field in Houston) are not providing their latest conditions.

Heavy rain and storms will dominate the weather picture around Houston for the next 24 hours. Much of the time it will be at tropical storm or hurricane force wind speed. See the National Weather Service statements for more details.

Hurricane Ike will make landfall along the Upper Texas coast late tonight through early Saturday morning. Rain bands containing very heavy rain will continue affecting the coastal areas and will increase in coverage and intensity as they spread inland overnight.

Widespread rainfall amounts of 5 to 7 inches with isolated totals of 10 to 12 inches will be possible through Sunday. Significant flooding will be possible in areas of heaviest rainfall. The heaviest rain is expected to fall east of a line from Rosenberg to Sargent.

Flooding will be exacerbated in portions of Harris and Galveston counties due to unusually high tide levels.
High tide levels will block area bayous from draining efficiently.

After winds subside tomorrow as Ike moves further inland and weakens, remember to not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Vehicles caught in rising water should be abandoned quickly. If your vehicle stalls, abandon it and seek higher ground immediately. Rapidly rising water may engulf your vehicle and its occupants and sweep them away. Move to higher ground.

Just to let you guys know, the radar returns display underneath the city location labels. It doesn't look bad at all actually. Sorry for the poor image quality as I just snapped a picture with my cell phone.



I do think when all is said and done, I would expect more localized STARs than just the metropolitan area as a whole covered (to match the SD STARs). This includes of course a CC site. I can live with Central Park being that, but White Plains should be it if a new localized STAR is created for me specifically.

Maybe we'll still see some metropolitan area elements still used like the forecast maps for New York City, the Hudson Valley, Long Island and central New Jersey. The daypart forecast pages I can see, too, but perhaps the more important locations like Newark instead of Parsippany. The other three (Central Park, Islip and White Plains) are perfect because they're in my mind the best locations for each part of the metropolitan area. The getaway forecast locations are the same as what I have on my SD STAR, so I see no need for adjustments.

I am surprised there are no animated weather icons for the HD STAR, but given the smaller size icon for each location in the current conditions and forecast pages, perhaps it would be too difficult to detect on the screen. Who knows.

If I knew about what I could've done, I would've posted on Thursday about this BETA test and provided snapshots. But either way, NYwxguy and Casey Buck did not do anything by posting about this yesterday. So I wanted to now clear that up.

While this is quite exciting to see this development take place, remember this is NOT the final product.

I disagree with the opinion about Microsoft Virtual Earth being used. I think it's a great addition. What's funny is that I had used that style of maps for my weather reports and now TWC has gone in that direction. Very cool.
