Your Local Weather / Re: New York City weather
« on: February 05, 2008, 12:45:20 PM »
It is a dreary midday hour in New York City today, but it is in no way dampening the spirits of millions of
New Yorkers who are enjoying the New York Giants' Super Bowl victory.  The team is right now in the middle of
their celebration parade down the Canyon of Heroes under overcast conditions and temperatures near 50°.
The rain held off in the vicinity of the parade and City Hall as the precipitation is off well off to the northwest
and to the east of the city.

However, there is a significant chance there will be thunderstorms around and the National Weather Service
has them in the forecast for later today.  So you were seeing the metropolitan area forecast map correctly.

It will remain unsettled for the remainder of the week as temperatures will continue to rise to record high levels
tomorrow as readings are expected to top 60° tomorrow, but then significantly drop down again on Thursday with
a chance of snow showers.

PLEASE NOTE:
There were no weather observations or forecast data available for Long Beach, New York,
so that location isn't included on the New York City metropolitan area weather maps.

Your Local Weather / Re: New York City weather
« on: February 01, 2008, 02:25:20 PM »
The same major storm system that brought snow to the northern Great Plains and Great Lakes regions and
severe storms in the south is moving through the northeastern part of the country today. Northern parts of the
New York City metropolitan area have been receiving freezing rain, which is making driving conditions hazardous.
Temperatures are slowing rising above the freezing mark from a south to north direction.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been in effect for the far northern and western suburbs and is set to expire
at 2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.

Conditions are expected to improve by tomorrow with above normal temperatures to near 50°, but in the meantime,
the evening rush hour is forecast to be damp with a possible thunderstorm in some locations across the region.

I'll be putting together the graphics pages as soon as possible, just like my previous entry.

Your Local Weather / Re: Dallas-Fort Worth weather
« on: January 29, 2008, 01:10:45 PM »
After the unseasonably chilly temperatures that was experienced back on Friday, a brief warmup back the
other direction will come to an end this afternoon.  A potent cold front is sweeping through Texas as part of
a low pressure system that is moving through the Great Plains region.  Notice the drastic contrast in temperatures
between the western side of Texas and up in Oklahoma as opposed to what it is in Dallas and points east.

High temperatures this morning are unseasonably mild being well into the 60s to near 70°, but will steadily drop as
the day progresses. It has been a very windy day already with wind gusts as high as near 60 MPH in a few spots.
Completely unlike Friday, it is quite dry across the region with Love Field in Dallas reporting a humidity level of
just 19%. Because of the high winds and dry conditions, a Red Flag Warning has been issued for the entire
Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area until at least 6:00 PM Central Standard Time this evening.
See the National Weather Service statements for more details.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, Texas on January 29, 2008

A WIND ADVISORY is in effect until 6:00 PM Central Standard Time this evening.

Strong west and northwest winds will continue through the afternoon hours. Sustained wind speeds of
30 to 40 MPH will continue with gusts in excess of 50 mph possible through late afternoon.
In addition, some blowing dust may reduce visibilities to around 3 to 5 miles during the afternoon.
The strong winds will diminish quickly this evening.

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of at least 20 to 30 MPH are expected. Winds this strong can make
driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Boaters should use extra caution when venturing onto
area lakes. Residents may wish to take action to secure trash cans, lawn furniture and other lightweight
outdoor objects that may be blown around in the strong winds.

A RED FLAG WARNING is in effect until 6:00 PM Central Standard Time this evening.

A Red flag warning remains in effect until 6:00 PM Central Standard Time this evening across all of North Texas
for very strong winds and very low humidities.

A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect Wednesday afternoon...

Strong west and northwest winds and very low humidities will continue through the afternoon across all of
North Texas. Sustained wind speeds of 30 to 40 MPH with gusts in excess of 50 MPH and relative humidities
ranging from 10 to 15% will lead to extreme fire weather conditions through early evening.
The winds are expected to diminish this evening.

Return southerly flow and low humidity will lead to very high fire danger conditions across all of North Texas
Wednesday afternoon. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for all of North Texas on Wednesday afternoon.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.
A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry vegetation will create explosive fire growth potential.
Avoid all outside burning and welding today. Do not toss lit cigarette Butts outside.
Report wild fires to the nearest Fire Department or law enforcement office.

Weatherford, Texas instead. Since there were not enough locations that had weather conditions that had

Your Local Weather / Re: Los Angeles weather
« on: January 27, 2008, 04:35:30 PM »
As it has been well-documented, areas of heavy rain and storms across much of southern California and
most of Arizona has caused flooding in many areas across the region this weekend.  Mudslides are occurring
in the wildfire burned areas where vegetation was stripped from the massive fires from three months ago.

At this hour, much of the precipitation has subsided for now, but more rain and thunderstorms are possible across
the region tonight. The bulk of the precipitation is moving right through Los Angeles and areas to the west and
southeast actually have pretty fair conditions and normal visibility.  Malibu, California is under some haze though,
but mudslides have been a major threat after rain fell there earlier.

Some updated weather information for the National Weather Service...

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Oxnard, California on January 27, 2008

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH remains in effect until 6:00 PM Pacific Standard Time

Severe Thunderstorm Watch 23 remains in effect until 6:00 PM Pacific Standard Time for the following locations:

Fresno County
Kern County
Kings County
Los Angeles County
Madera County
Mariposa County
Merced County
Monterey County
San Benito County
San Luis Obispo County
Santa Barbara County
Tulare County
Ventura County

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect until 9:00 PM Pacific Standard Time for Santa Barbara,
Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Showers will increase later this morning, then showers, heavy at times will continue through this evening.
Rainfall rates of ½ inch to one inch per hour are possible in heavy showers. There is a good chance of
thunderstorms later this morning through this evening and some thunderstorms could produce rainfall rates
in excess of 1½ inches per hour.

Intense rainfall will pose a significant threat of dangerous flash floods outside of burn areas and debris flows
in and below burn areas.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.
Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.

A WIND ADVISORY is in effect until 10:00 PM Pacific Standard Time

Areas of south winds will increase to 20 to 35 MPH with peak gusts to 45 MPH by this afternoon,
then continue through this evening before diminishing and shifting to the west. The strongest winds are expected
later this afternoon through the early evening, especially in the valleys and foothills. These winds may be
strong enough to knock down trees with shallow root systems due to the highly saturated ground.

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 35 MPH or greater are expected.
Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

For the first time in nearly two months, most of Arizona will be receiving some potentially flooding rains today
and tonight. This includes the Phoenix metropolitan area, an area that had been suffering through drought
conditions for most of 2007.

I'll let you view the National Weather Service statement for more details.
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/pns/StormUpdate.php

A strong low pressure area will move across the desert southwest the next couple of days.
Copious amounts of moisture associated with this system will result in periods of rain, some of which
might be heavy at times into this evening.  A Flash Flood Watch will continue this afternoon and evening
for much of south central Arizona.  The threat of showers will continue over south central Arizona on Monday
with drier weather expected by Tuesday across the entire area.  Another weather system will bring
a slight chance of showers on Wednesday and Wednesday night followed by dry conditions on Thursday
and into next weekend. Expect cool temperatures to prevail this week.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on January 27, 2008
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect from 12:00 PM Mountain Standard Time through this evening.

The Flash Flood Watch continues for portions of east-central Arizona and south-central Arizona,
including the following areas... in east-central Arizona: southern Gila County/Tonto National Forest foothills
and south-central Arizona: greater Phoenix area, northwest Maricopa County and northwest and
north central Pinal County.

Locally heavy rainfall is expected to develop across the watch area this morning and will continue into this evening.
The heaviest rainfall will occur over the higher terrain areas of far northern Maricopa County eastward into
southern Gila County and perhaps the far north-central part of Pinal County. Rainfall amounts from 1 to 3 inches
are possible over the higher terrain, with ½ inch to 1½ inches possible at lower elevations of south central Arizona.

Rainfall of this intensity will almost assuredly result in rises to small streams and washes over the area,
including but not limited to Cave Creek, Cottonwood Creek, Sycamore Creek, Indian Bend wash and Tonto Creek.
Some of these creeks and washes could potentially overflow their banks. In addition, heavy rain expected further
to the north along with potential snow melt from the rim country will likely result in rising main stem rivers such as
the Agua Fria, Verde and Salt rivers. Finally, mudflows and rock slides will also be possible along area highways.
Particularly vulnerable will be Highway 60 between Superior and Globe as well as State Highway 77 through
the Salt River Canyon.

A Flash Flood Watch means that flooding of washes, creeks and other drainage areas is possible within
the watch area. People in the watch area should keep an eye on the weather and be prepared for immediate action
should heavy rain and flooding occur or a Flash Flood Warning be issued.

Here is some local coverage on the highly unusual heavy rains in the Phoenix metropolitan area today.

Your Local Weather / Re: Dallas-Fort Worth weather
« on: January 25, 2008, 01:15:10 PM »
The morning rush hour in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area usually isn't fun to begin with, but it was tougher
than normal today.  Wintry precipitation is something you don't see that often in northern Texas even during
this time of year.  A mix of rain and sleet made roads difficult to travel on for commuters and temperatures
are just above the freezing mark in nearly all locations across the Metroplex where rain is falling instead.

Most of the precipitation is on the south and east side of the Metroplex with temperatures mainly in the 30s,
well below the normal high of 55° for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on this date.  There is the chance of
more rain for the rest of today and highs are expected to top out in the low 40s.  Conditions will improve by
tomorrow with readings jumping back up into the 60s under fair skies.

On a side note, after I had recently revamped my Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area weather map,
I have added a brand new northern Texas regional map.  It also includes locations outside the Lone Star State,
including an important one with Oklahoma City. Unfortunately, I couldn't include San Angelo, Texas on it.
From time to time, you will see Shreveport, Louisiana though. For any of my weather maps, those locations that
don't have heat indices or wind chill readings aren't posted, but the place names remain.  Also, it was put off for
quite some time, but I finally added the element that was missing for the black bar information I provide.
It is the monthly precipitation total.  However, it is a little different in my presentation than the actual IntelliSTAR,
that being one of the very few elements I have that is not emulated.  I decided to put above the place name
the "January precipitation" label instead of "currently" as the IntelliSTAR uses so I can have more room to keep
the place names as they are without shortening them any further. I just didn't like writing "JAN PRECIP" and then
"0.26 IN" on the same line as it would be for what you'd see on TV.

And lastly, note the repeated forecast for this afternoon across the Metroplex.
Hard to believe that six reporting sites all expect rain with a high temperature of 40°.
The National Weather Service had that exact forecast for each of them despite three in Tarrant County,
two in Dallas County and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport located in both counties.

What I found interesting is the wide range in contrasting weather forecasted between northwestern Texas and
the northeast side. I'm talking about the temperature difference and the amount of sunshine or inclement weather.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,
the current conditions graphic page background is by oceanwatersparkles at Flickr.

I'll have to wait for at least 10 minutes until live on-air programming returns, but I have the black bar back.
It has the backup CC site's weather data on it (Westchester County Airport in White Plains instead of
downtown White Plains, the primary site).

General Discussion / Re: Happy Birthday NYCTWCJunkie!
« on: January 22, 2008, 11:48:48 AM »
Thank you very much for the birthday wishes, Gary, Victor, Roland and Billy.  I appreciate it!   :)

I basically spent it with family last night with a day off instead of putting in my evening hours.
Mother Nature was kind to me yesterday with a nice and extra cold day, just the way I like it!
Maybe because I'm a January baby, I naturally love winter a lot more than any desire for hot and humid days.
I'm I'm not mistaken, here in the northeastern part of the country, this is generally the coldest week of the year.

It may not be as cold as the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions of the United States, but it is still cold here
nonetheless. The large area of Arctic high pressure settled into the northeastern part of the country last night
and very cold temperatures is in the forecast during this overnight period and into later today.
Overnight lows will be in the single digits and lower teens while it will be in the mid to upper 20s during the day.

Here is a WeatherSTAR 4000 emulator clip for the latest weather conditions from nearby White Plains, New York.
It is from 2:05 AM Eastern Standard Time. Click the hyperlink below to see the video clip. The song used is
The Weather Channel's J flavor version of "Out In The Cold" by George Howard, one of my all-time favorite
Local on the 8s songs.

OFFICIAL WEATHER WARNING by Environment Canada on January 19, 2008 at 9:33 PM Central Time
A WIND CHILL WARNING remains in effect through later this morning.

Extreme wind chills continuing.

This is a warning that extreme wind chill conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions.
Monitor weather conditions. Listen for updated statements.

A very cold northwesterly flow continues over Manitoba, due to a large high pressure ridge over the western Arctic,
which extends across Saskatchewan and into the Dakotas, coupled with a strong low pressure centre
in the eastern Arctic. Little change is expected in this overall pattern for the next couple of days.
As a result, wind chills in the -40°C (-40°F) to -45°C (-49°F) range are likely to occur once again over parts
of southern Manitoba overnight through Sunday morning. Similar values are likely once again on Sunday night.

I plan to put together the graphics pages for this report as soon as possible.

Frigid conditions continue in the Twin Cities metropolitan area and across the entire state of Minnesota
during this overnight period. Wind chill readings will once again dip down to dangerously low levels,
but thankfully winds are relatively light to keep it from being much worse than it potentially could be.

PLEASE NOTE:
Minneapolis' weather conditions listed directly below is not from University of Minnesota as it usually is listed.
Due to that site still malfunctioning, I am using the same alternate location as yesterday morning's report.
Unfortunately, once again there were no humidity and dew point readings available for this update.

Your Local Weather / Re: Winnipeg weather

In one of the most frigid areas of all of North America, this overnight period is certainly the coldest of the season
as we are nearly one-third through so far.  Temperatures and especially wind chils are at very dangerous levels
across much of south central Canada and into the Upper Midwest region of the United States.

Environment Canada has issued a Wind Chill Warning for Manitoba, including the Winnipeg metropolitan area.
Anyone leaving exposed skin to the dangerous frigid temperatures risks life-threatening consequences as a result.

OFFICIAL WEATHER WARNING by Environment Canada on January 18, 2008 at 9:29 PM Central Time
A WIND CHILL WARNING is in effect through later this morning.

Extreme wind chills continuing.

This is a warning that extreme wind chill conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions.
Monitor weather conditions. Listen for updated statements.

An Arctic high pressure ridge building into Saskatchewan is creating a cold northwesterly flow over Manitoba
creating wind chills in the -40°C (-40°F) to -45°C (-49°F) range through Saturday morning.
Moderation in the wind chill is expected during the day Saturday but extreme wind chills are forecast
to return again Saturday night in southeastern Manitoba.

Because International Falls, Minnesota had really extreme temperature and wind chill readings,
I'm including that location in this Winnipeg weather update. Two other reporting sites worth noting...
Fargo, North Dakota's temperature is -19°F (-28°C) with west winds at 8 MPH making it feel like -36°F (-38°C).
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada is at -15°F (-26°C) with west winds at 11 MPH making it feel like -35°F (-37°C).
Both locations are under clear skies.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,
the current conditions graphic page background is by Ronald Pineda.

Here are the metric temperature conversions for the above maps (nearest degree):

James Armstrong Richardson International Airport... -29°C
Fort Garry North... -27°C
Assiniboine South... -26°C
downtown Winnipeg... -26°C
The Forks... -25°C

Your Local Weather / Re: Minneapolis-St. Paul weather

The coldest night of the season is making it downright frigid across the entire state of Minnesota and that also
includes the Twin Cities metropolitan areas.  Temperatures at this hour are well below zero and wind chills are
at dangerous levels. The National Weather Service has issued wind chill advisories and warnings statewide
through the daytime hours later today.

With this frigid Arctic air mass in place, temperatures will very slowly modify to tolerable levels by Tuesday as it
might get up to 10° by then.  It will remain dry throughout the period with the exception of a slight chance of snow
on Monday night.

"Dangerous wind chills continue into Saturday"

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, MN on January 18, 2008
A WIND CHILL ADVISORY is in effect until 6:00 PM Central Standard Time on Saturday evening.

Cold air has engulfed the region on northwest winds which continue to blow at 10 to 15 MPH.
Temperatures will continue to drop quickly into the overnight with winds only subsiding gradually.

This will create dangerous wind chills. Already, wind chills of -25° to -30° have been reported late this evening
across portions of southern Minnesota and west central Wisconsin. These wind chills will continue to fall overnight
into the -30° to -40° category. Temperatures will only moderate gradually Saturday as northwest winds continue.
Wind chills of -25° to -35° will continue during late Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon.
Therefore a Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect for the entire area of central and south central Minnesota
and west central Wisconsin until 6:00 PM Saturday.

Wind chill advisories mean that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate dangerously low wind chills.
This will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
If you must venture outdoors overnight into Saturday, make sure you wear a hat and gloves.
Keep blankets and extra clothing in your car if you travel.

PLEASE NOTE:
Minneapolis' weather conditions listed directly below is not from University of Minnesota as it usually is listed.
Due to that site malfunctioning, I am using another location just blocks south of the central business district.
Unfortunately, there were no humidity and dew point readings available for this report.
I will put together graphics pages as soon as possible.
