Local Forecast / Re: IS LDL
« on: May 30, 2008, 02:20:00 AM »
I have not seen this in person yet, as I'm not home, and won't be til late tomorrow night. I'll *try* to get a pic or two then, unless megamanfan  can get them now? Until that point, here are the original mock ups straight out of the TWC Creative Dept. Enjoy. :)

Sorry I didn't get to vote, Tyler. Thanks very much for sharing your mock-ups!  Wow, those are great upgrades! Cannot wait to see it for real in the future.

That LDL reminds me a bit of ESPN's Bottom Line with the way they have the league ID tabs atop the LDL display when showing the news items and scores.

Hmmm, the Interstate font is on its way out, huh?  But I thought I saw it on the TWC HD satellite LDL, only it's skinnier to match what font is on the IntelliSTAR 36-hour forecast body text.  I hope that's what we end up seeing, but your font there is definitely nice, too.

That way the non-HD programming looks natural, instead of being really s t r e t c h e d out.

Yeah, like everything on TBS HD except for the syndicated shows actually shot in HD and the Major League Baseball games.

Too had that The Weather Channel didn't make their HD logo bigger and vertical like ESPN does with theirs.

I don't notice any difference on my TV in regards to pillar boxes on my cable feed of The Weather Channel.  I watch it through the video connection "Colorstream HD" on my HD set. This is where I can watch both SD and HD feeds of channels without having to flip from one video source to another and get the SD channels as they are and the HD channels in HD.

154
I never have received Weatherscan here, only seen it on my visits to Philadelphia...

The Weather Channel is on channel 62 in my lineup for Cablevision of Southern Westchester.

I have setup a basic site where I am posting ads and local on the 8s spots from TWC HD. Right now I am hosting it on my home computer so the connection is REALLY slow but it works. I will be adding videos as I get them... feedback welcomed!

Thanks very much for putting together a site, recording those clips and sharing them with us.  :)

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Alexandra Steele
« on: May 29, 2008, 08:38:37 PM »
Is it me (it very VERY well could be, and probably is) or does Alexandra look like she might have a baby bump.  I noticed this late last week when I turned on the TV.  She looked like she may have had a little bump going.  Tonight, she wore a dress type thing, and yea its a dress, it will stick out, but she just looks like she has a baby bump.

Anyone else notice this at all?

Hold up, hold up.... hold up.  What?! Alexandre Steele is pregnant?  No way!  Seriously, she is?

In recent months, I rarely have time to put on The Weather Channel during prime time hours like right now
because I have my workload to do. I only have a few minutes to stop by tonight and saw this thread and
had to respond to it.

I know that I was the first to suspect Jen Carfagno being pregnant, but not Betty Davis though.
But since I hadn't taken a real look at Alexandra to know, this is a surprise. Has she announced anything?

I mean, not that we need or have to know her personal life like if she's married or not,
but I had suspected she wasn't. But if she's expecting, congratulations to her.

I figured it was best to put this brand spanking new article into this thread instead of having this standing as a thread of its own. Here is a great article on today's edition of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution on The Weather Channel's new HD studio set to debut on June 2nd.

A couple of new photos will wow you, especially the one with Paul Goodloe in it.

Your Local Weather / Re: Phoenix Weather
« on: May 21, 2008, 03:45:30 PM »
For the second straight day, a record high temperature was set as it reached 108° yesterday at
Sky Harbor International Airport, breaking the old mark of 106° just three years ago.  It was the third straight
100°+ day in the Valley of the Sun and while it will be at least 10° cooler than yesterday, there's a small chance
some locations may reach 100° again today. It's not likely in Phoenix itself as today's forecast high temperature
is expected to reach 95°. Two other regional locations set records yesterday.

Phoenix (Sky Harbor International Airport)
Yesterday's high: 108° (old record was 106° in 2005)
Yesterday's low: 80° (old record for highest minimum temperature was 79° in 2007)

Yuma, Arizona
Yesterday's high: 112° (old record was 110° in 1942)
Yesterday's low: 78° (old record for highest minimum temperature was 76° in 1966)

Blythe, California
Yesterday's high: 111° (old record was 110° in 2005)

Imperial, California
Yesterday's low: 78° (old record for highest minimum temperature was 73° in 1968)

Meantime, Phoenix is under two National Weather Service watches or warnings at this hour.
The entire state of Arizona with the exception of Coconino County is under a Red Flag Warning right now.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on May 21, 2008

A RED FLAG WARNING is in effect from until 9:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Red Flag Warning which is in effect from 10:00 AM
Mountain Standard Time this morning to 9:00 PM Mountain Standard Time this evening for southeast California
including Joshua Tree National Park, the lower Colorado River valley and southwest and south central Arizona
including Tonto National Forest due to strong winds, low relative humidity and very dry fuels.

A strong low pressure system is moving into the region today. Strong southwesterly sustained winds of
20 to 25 MPH with gusts in excess of 35 MPH will develop across the region late this morning and persist well into
the evening hours. In addition, relative humidity levels will be at or below 15%. The combination of strong
gusty winds, relative humidity below 15% and very dry fuel conditions will lead to hazardous fire weather conditions.

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the field of this red flag warning.

A WIND ADVISORY is in effect from until 11:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

A strong low pressure system will move into the southwest United States today. This will cause strong westerly
winds to develop late this morning and persist well into the evening hours. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 MPH
with gusts over 40 MPH can be expected. The strong winds may lead to areas of blowing sand and dust
developing this afternoon across the Lower Desert locales which would impact travel along major corridors
such as Interstate 8 and Interstate 10 and Route 85 and 95.

A Wind Advisory means that sustained wind speeds of between 30 and 40 MPH are expected or wind gusts
of between 40 and 58 MPH. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
In addition, strong winds over desert areas could result in briefly lowered visibilities to well under a mile at times
in blowing dust or blowing sand. Use extra caution.

As I had previously mentioned, the chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow (Thursday)
will mark the start of a cooling trend in time for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
I will be putting together the graphics pages as soon as possible.

PLEASE NOTE:
Glendale Municipal Airport didn't provide their latest weather conditions for this hour, so Luke Air Force Base
is being used for Glendale. It is located to the west of its downtown area. Also, neither Goodyear, Arizona
nor Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Arizona provided their latest weather conditions, so they aren't
included in this report. Goodyear, Arizona also didn't provide their latest data, so nearby Avondale, Arizona
will be shown on the metropolitan area weather map.

Your Local Weather / Re: Phoenix Weather
« on: May 20, 2008, 06:55:45 PM »
I’ll just let the National Weather Service statements make things self explanatory. Let me just say it is to be
yet another scorcher in Phoenix before a dramatic cool down later in the week. One item I can mention is that
yesterday’s high temperature at Sky Harbor International Airport reached 110° at 4:42 PM Mountain Standard Time
to set a new record for the date, surpassing the old record of 105° previously set just two years ago.

After another unseasonably hot day today, much cooler and windy weather in store tomorrow
into the end of the week.

A strong area of high pressure aloft will make for unseasonably hot temperatures across the area once again today
with many new records expected to be broken as afternoon high temperatures will range from 15° to 20°
above normal.

Although the week has started out unusually hot, it will certainly not end that way. A strong Pacific low pressure
system will be taking shape the next few days and will drop south into the Desert Southwest by Wednesday
and beyond. This system will help to push a strong cold front through the area Wednesday and Thursday,
giving much cooler temperatures. In fact, by Thursday, we can expect high temperatures at least 25° to 30°
lower than those being forecast today.

In addition to the cooler temperatures, strong winds are expected to develop by Wednesday. Localized gusts
approaching 40 MPH are possible across southwest and south central Arizona as well as southeast California.
These strong winds will likely produce areas of blowing dust and sand that could reduce visibilities at times
to under one mile.

As the cold upper low gets closer to the area by Thursday and Friday, it will begin to pull some moisture into
the region from the south. As a result, there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday
and Friday, most numerous over south central Arizona. The threat of showers will decrease on Saturday.

By Sunday and Memorial Day, the upper low is expected to move away from the region,
allowing for some warmer temperatures to return to the area along with generally sunny skies.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your other favorite sources of weather information for the latest
regarding this upcoming significant change in the weather.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on May 20, 2008

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect from until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

Record high temperatures can be expected again today across the deserts of south central and southwest Arizona
as well as southeast California as an unseasonably strong high pressure system remains over the area.
Some expected high temperatures this afternoon include 112° at Yuma, 110° at Blythe and Gila Bend
and 109° at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport as well as Parker, California and Imperial California.

It would be wise to complete as much outdoor activity as possible in the early morning when the sun and heat
are less intense. During periods of excessive heat, individuals can suffer heat-related illness when the body
can no longer cool itself.

If you plan to be outside for an extended period of time in the afternoon or early evening, stay in the shade
as much as possible and drink abundant amounts of water. Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
If you wear a wide-brimmed hat, your head and body will be much cooler. Stop outdoor activities,
drink lots of water or other non-alcoholic beverages and if possible, spend more time in air-conditioned or
well-ventilated places.

A FIRE WEATHER WATCH is in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.

Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening for southeast California
and southwest and south central Arizona due to strong winds, low relative humidity values and high fire danger.

A strong low pressure system will move into the southwest United States Wednesday. As it does,
strong southwesterly sustained winds of 20 to 30 MPH with gusts in excess of 40 MPH will develop across
much of the region during the late morning hours through evening hours. The combination of strong gusty winds,
relative humidity below 15% and dry to very dry fuel conditions will lead to hazardous fire weather conditions.

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the field of this Fire Weather Watch.

Your Local Weather / Re: Dallas-Fort Worth weather
« on: May 20, 2008, 05:55:40 PM »
As was the case in Phoenix, a new record high temperature was set at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport
yesterday afternoon at 3:17 PM Central Daylight Time of 99°, eclipsing the old mark of 98° set only two years ago.

It is to be another unseasonably hot day in the Metroplex as peak readings are expected to be in
the low to mid 90s, slightly lower than yesterday. The normal high temperature in Dallas is 84°,
so while springtime warmth is common here, it isn’t supposed to be THIS hot.  The above normal temperatures
are forecasted to continue right through the upcoming Memorial Day weekend as highs will be no lower than 90°.

I will be putting together the graphics pages as soon as possible.

Your Local Weather / Re: Phoenix Weather
« on: May 19, 2008, 07:45:00 PM »
After eclipsing the century mark for the first time this calendar year with a high temperature of 105° at 4:44 PM
yesterday afternoon (fell just 2° short of the record for that date), it is expected to be even hotter today
in Phoenix. Yesterday also saw Yuma, Arizona reach a record high temperature for yesterday's date of 113°,
breaking the old record of 109° set back in 1958.

Much of that hot air that gripped the west coast of California late last week and into the just completed weekend
where records were set in cities such as Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles, has moved into the
desert southwest of the country and also into the southern Great Plains with unseasonably very hot conditions.
Today and tomorrow are forecast to be between 105° to 110° in Phoenix before cooling off to the low 80s
by Thursday with a slight chance of thunderstorms.

It should be interesting to see how hot it gets during the daytime hours of today and tomorrow for Phoenix
in addition to locations west of the city.  An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for Phoenix until
8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time. Check out the latest National Weather Service statement for more details
as well as this page.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on May 19, 2008
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect from until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

After an unseasonably hot period, much cooler and windy weather headed our way by midweek.

A strong area of high pressure aloft will make for unseasonably hot temperatures the first couple of days this week,
with afternoon high temperatures from 15° to 20° above normal. In fact, if the official high temperature at
Sky Harbor International Airport reaches the predicted high of 110° today (Monday), it will mark the first time
in recorded history that the initial 100° high temperature of the season was immediately followed the next day
by the first 110° reading.

Although the week will start out unusually hot, it will certainly not end that way. A strong Pacific low pressure
system will be taking shape the next few days and will drop south into the desert southwest by Wednesday
and beyond. This system will help to push a strong cold front through the area Wednesday and Thursday,
giving much cooler temperatures. In fact, by Thursday, we can expect high temperatures at least
25° to 30° lower over those expected today and Tuesday.

In addition, as the system approaches, strong winds are expected to develop by late Tuesday and especially
on Wednesday. Gusts exceeding 40 MPH are likely across most areas of southwest and south-central Arizona
as well as southeast California. These strong winds will likely produce areas of blowing dust and sand that
could reduce visibilities at times to under one mile.

As the cold upper low gets closer to the area by Thursday and Friday, it will begin to pull some moisture into
the region from the south. As a result, there will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday
into the upcoming Holiday weekend.

By Sunday and Memorial Day, the upper low is expected to move away from the region, allowing some warming
to return to the area, along with more settled weather.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your other favorite sources of weather information for the latest
regarding this upcoming significant change in the weather.

Your Local Weather / Re: Dallas-Fort Worth weather

Following a brutal heat wave late last week and into the just completed weekend for those on the west coast
of California where they saw record breaking temperatures well into the 90s to around 100°, that hot air has
now made its way eastward into the desert southwest and southern Great Plains of the United States.

Dallas is known for its hot summer temperatures, but certainly not as hot as Phoenix. In the Arizona state capital,
it is expected to reach 110°. For Dallas, it will be in the upper 90s to near 100° this afternoon. Either way,
those two cities have one thing in common. It's still hot, unseasonably so even for their standards.

General Discussion / Re: Sports Thread
« on: May 18, 2008, 06:43:40 PM »
I know it's like comparing apples to oranges, but look at what the Boston Red Sox did in '04 to reach the Series...they won four straight after being down 0-3...so it's not completely out of the picture.

Probably won't happen, though.

It's only happened twice in NHL history where the 1942 Maple Leafs and 1975 Islanders did it.

Meantime...

The Boston Celtics survive a playoff series that went to the limit (and I hate that fact!) and move on
to the Eastern Conference Finals after their 97-92 Game 7 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
They face the Detroit Pistons for the right to go to the NBA Finals.
