If you want to go to one metropolitan area in the United States where it is downright bitter cold, look no farther than the Twin Cites. Here, you will find Old Man Winter in full form with subzero temperatures, snow falling and wind chill readings that will make you stay indoors if at all possible.

Light snow is moving through the region at this hour and is expected to exit before sunrise. Temperatures are between 0° and -5° around the Twin Cities area with light winds but low visibility in some spots. Conditions will gradually improve as the day progresses, but it will remain extremely cold. But 24 hours from now, it will be even colder as temperatures may dip down to least -10° or below with dangerous wind chill readings to go along with it.

A significant ice storm has set up across northern and western parts of the New York City metropolitan areas and other parts of the northeastern United States during this overnight period. The possibility exists in the distant suburbs for at least ½ inch of ice accumulation and that in turn could cause downed tree branches and power outages. Do not forget that roads will also be very dangerous where most ice accumulation is expected.

As the morning progresses, temperatures will slowly rise above freezing and the rain/snow line will move just slightly north of its current position. Precipitation will be all rain along the coast with still a wintry mix to icy conditions will remain inland.

The weather conditions are not expected to improve much over the next 36 to 48 hours as the threat of rain and/or snow showers exists through at least Thursday. Here are the latest statements from the National Weather Service.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Upton, New York on January 7, 2009

A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY is in effect until 4:00 AM Eastern Standard Time.

The National Weather Service in Upton, New York has issued a Freezing Rain Advisory which is in effect until 4:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday.

Areas of freezing rain will continue through the early morning hours before changing over to all rain. With temperatures
hovering around the freezing mark, ice accumulations will be light with up to a tenth of an inch on trees, power lines and
untreated sidewalks with icy spots on secondary and less traveled roadways across the region.

A Freezing Rain Advisory means that periods of freezing rain or freezing drizzle will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving.

A COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY is in effect from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM Eastern Standard Time.

A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday.

The combination of high astronomical tides and expected tidal departures of one and a half to two feet above normal will result in minor coastal flooding around the times of high tide late tonight into early Wednesday morning.

A coastal flood advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.

General Discussion / 2009 Winter Classic On New Year's Day

I don't know how many of you are aware of this very special event in the sports world, but anyone that follows hockey and meteorology like I do will find this to be a game you cannot resist checking out.

Today at Wrigley Field in Chicago, it is the site of the second outdoor National Hockey League game in the United States. In a matchup of two Original Six teams, the Chicago Blackhawks will host the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.  It is not the first outdoor game in NHL history as the Heritage Classic was played on November 22, 2003 at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  That day, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Edmonton Oilers by a score of 4-3. One year ago today, the first such game was played on American soil as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the host Buffalo Sabres 2-1 with Sidney Crosby scoring the shootout-winning goal before 70,000+ fans at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York.

What does this have anything to do with the weather, you ask?  As you know, NHL games are played indoors. The first outdoor game was a rousing success even though American viewers were not able to see it on live television. Last year, Americans got to watch on NBC. This event may be to some a novelty event, but if you love hockey, love winter weather and want to be that kid playing pond hockey, the 2009 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic is a must see.

In order for this event to be played, one important part of the planning process is keep a very close eye on the weather in Chicago. This time of year it is just the beginning of the really cold and snowy season.  Certainly another great setting for an outdoor NHL game, Wrigley Field is usually the full-time home of Major League Baseball's Chicago Cubs, but over the last several days, the venue has been converted to house a regulation size NHL rink placed where the baseball field usually sits. Certainly a setting worth seeing.

The weather forecast for today's game will be excellent and hopefully will go without a hitch.

On this New Year's Day, it is a typical late morning winter day in Chicago. Temperatures are in the 20s with some locations experiencing breezy conditions.

The big event today is the 2009 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic that will get underway at 1:00 PM Eastern Standard Time at Wrigley Field on Chicago's north side. The historic home of the Chicago Cubs hosts the second-ever outdoor National Hockey League game that is to be played in United States. The closest weather observation site to the stadium is ironically home to Major League Baseball's other team in the Windy City, and that would be the Chicago White Sox.

The weather data provided below is not current as of the exact time this report was posted on this message board. The information was gathered for December 31, 2008 at 11:55 PM Eastern Standard Time.

With roughly one million people cramming the streets around Times Square in New York City, the New Year’s ball is about to drop as we usher in the new 2009 calendar year. After the final day of 2008 had brought wintry weather to the region where anywhere from a coating to 4 inches of snow fell, strong generally northwesterly winds combined with the colder temperatures since Monday have put wind chill readings below zero in some areas.

Despite a few reporting sites indicating very windy conditions, a High Wind Warning and Wind Advisory were each dropped about an hour or two before midnight.

The New York City metropolitan area will see fair conditions for New Year’s Day, but cold peak temperatures only in the 20s. However, because it will be breezy at times, wind chill readings may not get above zero. By Friday, another clipper system is expected to pass through the northeastern United States, in turn bringing the possibility of scattered snow showers or a wintry mix of precipitation to the New York City metropolitan area. Temperatures will be roughly 10° milder than Thursday though.

Here is the latest weather statement from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Upton, New York.

Cold and icy conditions overnight for the tri-state area...

On the heels of a rapidly deepening low pressure system east of New England, strong northwest winds will combine with a very cold air mass to produce wind chill values of zero to 5 below and as low as ten below well north and west of New York City.

In addition, many locations across the tri-state region received several inches of snowfall on Wednesday. The rapid onset of the cold air combined with wet roadways earlier in the day has left many secondary and untreated roadways snow packed with a layer of ice underneath. Blowing snow and reduced visibilities will further make travel difficult overnight.

Anyone traveling this New Year's Eve and through the overnight hours should prepare for icy conditions. Bridges and overpasses are especially vulnerable. Allow for extra time to reach your destination and use low speeds to account for the icy conditions.

Also note that since this is an extra special day on the calendar and the time of this report, I decided to provide weather conditions for three extra locations within New York City. They include Times Square, Brooklyn and The Bronx. None of these three reporting sites are from the National Weather Service.

Possible record breaking warmth this afternoon in North Texas will give way to possible severe weather during the overnight hours of tomorrow morning are expected ahead of a storm system in the central Rocky Mountains. Temperatures are about 20° above normal for late December in Dallas and even for Lone Star State weather standards, it's way too warm.

It is also windy outside as strong generally southerly winds have been persistent through the day and some gusts are approaching the 45 to 50 MPH range. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory until 5:00 PM this afternoon.

Severe storms are certainly possible by the time many wake up tomorrow morning as temperatures will drop and winds will continue to play a role. Tornadoes cannot be ruled out in isolated spots across the region.

Temperatures will return closer to normal levels in the 50s by the time we get to the New Year's holiday.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, Texas on December 26, 2008
A WIND ADVISORY is in effect until 5:00 PM Central Standard Time.

South winds will continue at 25 to 30 MPH with gusts in excess of 40 MPH through this afternoon. Winds should diminish somewhat and just before dark or 5:00 PM Central Standard Time.

A Wind Advisory means strong winds can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles traveling on east to west oriented roads and highways. Boaters should use extra caution when venturing onto area lakes. Residents should take action to secure trash cans, lawn furniture and other lightweight outdoor objects that may be blown around in the strong winds.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect from 12:00 AM to 3:00 PM Central Standard Time on Tuesday.

The Wind Chill Advisory is no longer in effect. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midnight tonight to 3:00 PM Central Standard Time on Tuesday.

Another low pressure system will strengthen over the Lee of the Rockies this afternoon and move toward the upper Midwest tonight into Tuesday. Snow will develop across east central Minnesota and into west central Wisconsin late this evening and especially overnight. The bulk of the snow is expected to fall between midnight and 9:00 AM Central Standard Time on Tuesday which will likely cause travel difficulties during the Tuesday morning commute.

Total snowfall accumulations by Tuesday afternoon will range between 3 and 5 inches across east central Minnesota and west central Wisconsin.

The Wind Chill Advisory has ended. Wind chills during this cold air episode from Saturday night through this morning dropped as low as 30 to 35 below across east central Minnesota and west central Wisconsin.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.

West winds will rapidly increase in the wake of intense low
pressure moving into the Canadian Maritimes. West winds of 25 to
35 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph are expected overnight into
Monday morning.

These wind speeds could knock down some weak trees... tree limbs
and wires... especially those which are currently being weighed
down by snow and ice.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph...
or gusts of 46 to 57 mph... are expected or occurring. Winds this

Wind Advisory in effect until 1 PM EST Monday...

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect until 1 PM EST Monday.

The double barrel low pressure systems around the area will merge
into one near eastern Maine overnight and continue to intensify on
its way through the Canadian Maritimes on Monday.

West winds will continue to increase tonight and probably reach
their peak during the first half of the day on Monday. Sustained
west winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph with peak gusts reaching
around 45 mph.

These wind speeds should knock down some weak trees, tree limbs
and wires. The trees are going to be under pressure from separate
forces. From the Interstate 95 corridor and northwestward there is
still ice on some trees. This will make it easier for them to be
snapped. Farther to the southeast, precipitation totals so far
this month have averaged twice the normal December amount already.
The supersaturated soil will make it easier for shallow rooted
trees to be knocked down.

In addition to the wind, this air mass will be the coldest one of
the season so far. Wind chill factors come Monday morning will
average around zero with readings well below zero over the higher
terrain. Please dress appropriately if you have to spend much time
outdoors.

Be prepared for the likelihood of scattered power outages. Also
if possible do not park vehicles under trees that are encased in
ice or are shallow rooted such as Willows. A Wind Advisory means
that wind gusts of around 45 mph are expected. Winds this strong
can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles
especially on north to south overpasses. Use extra caution. Winds
will diminish Monday afternoon as the intense low pressure system
slowly moves farther away.

The first significant snowfall of the season is now here despite the fact that the official start of the winter is not until Sunday. Snowflakes began to fall within the last 60 to 75 minutes with rates of at least an inch per hour. Visibilities are quite low as some reporting sites are showing just ½ mile or less.

Temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark in New York City itself and the immediately surrounding the city, but just to the south and west, mix precipitation is falling where it is above that 32° transition temperature. The southern half of New Jersey and toward Philadelphia is expected to be a rain event.

Roughly 3 to 6 inches is expected around the city with higher amounts in the northern and western suburbs. Conditions aren't going to improve much over the duration of this weekend as the second part of a winter storm is expected to roll through later tomorrow into Sunday.

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for New York City, the urban areas of New Jersey and Long Island while the rest of the metropolitan area is under a Winter Storm Warning through midnight tonight. See the National Weather Service statement below for more details.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8:00 AM this morning to midnight Eastern Standard Time tonight.

Snow is expected to overspread the region this morning and could become heavy at times in the afternoon. The snow is expected to mix with sleet and rain in the afternoon, especially along the south shore of Long Island.

Snowfall accumulations of 3 to 5 inches of snow and sleet is expected with lesser amounts along the south shore of Long Island. In addition, somewhat higher amounts are possible across northeast Suffolk as the cold air remains in place for a longer period of time.

Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.

It is an unusually chilly and damp morning in southern California with temperatures only in the upper 40s to low 50s and rain across much of the region. Roughly 20 miles west of Los Angeles, you will find much better sky conditions and better visibility.

After the recent wildfires, there are flood advisories that have been posted by the National Weather Service for the burn areas. Much of Los Angeles County is under the Flood Advisory until noon today. See the weather statements below for more details.

It will remain unsettled for at least the next 24 to 36 hours with a chance of more showers through at least tomorrow night.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Oxnard, California on December 15, 2008
A FLOOD ADVISORY is in effect for Los Angeles County until 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.

The National Weather Service in Oxnard has extended the flood advisory for Los Angeles County in southwest California until 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.

At 9:50 AM, Doppler radar indicated moderate to locally heavy rain continuing across much of Los Angeles County. The highest rainfall intensities will be focused across eastern Los Angeles County with rates between ¼ inch to ½ inch per hour. Storm totals have ranged between one and three inches across the Los Angeles basin. Urban and small stream flooding will continue across portions of the County through the remainder of the morning hours.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground.

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH remains in effect through this afternoon.

The Flash Flood Watch continues for the recent burn areas in Los Angeles County including Santa Catalina Island in southwest California.

Through this afternoon rainfall rates could exceed one half inch per hour through this afternoon.

Flash flooding and debris flows will be a particular threat in and below recently burned areas.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

Southern California residents in or near the recently burned areas are urged to take The Steps necessary to protect their property. Persons in the watch area should remain alert and follow directions of emergency preparedness officials.
