Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion

Vocal Songs have returned to Local on The 8s
Wow, I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm actually *glad* for once. I thought those two songs would be playing FOREVER. :o Still miss the instrumental/jazz stuff they have on
Haha I feel ya! From what I gather it was an attempt to market their new branding and theme. There was always intent to bring back the regular music but I too am a bit surprised it took this long.

I'm having a wonderful January. I'm dating again, my new job is going so well, and I'm starting my final semester soon. I'm off to a good start, pretty much!

Hi peeps :D
Thats awesome :D
Is anyone interested that the Winter Olympics are starting on February 6 in Sochi, Russia?  When growing up, my family and I loved to watch the events and the ceremonies.  I don't know how much time I will have this time due to work, but I still may try to watch a little.  What do you all think about them?

I personally prefer watching the summer Olympics over the winter ones but still find them both enjoyable.  The only bad thing is that the winter Olympics are, well, in the middle of winter during classes and stuff, so assuming I don't have boat loads of homework I should be able to tune in.  Let's just hope these Olympics are carried out safely without any suicide bombings like what were occurring a few weeks ago.
I didn't realize it was so dangerous there until I started hearing stories coming out from that part of the world. Sheesh.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: DirecTV Dropping TWC

I hate to break it to you folks but The Weather Network isn't happening.

Lets look at the clues on their website:

"The Weather Newspaper" shows a sample cover coming out on Feb 14, 2014. The article talks about a tornado that hit a school "nearly seventeen and a half years ago". The event happened in 1989... thats 24 years ago. The article was clearly copied from somewhere.

Founders: Michael E. Smith, Steven W. Smith, Eric Welch..... for successful entrepreneurs they are pretty absent online. The largest weekly publication they claim to own is the OC Post Sentinel. The website is copyrighted in 2011 and very poorly designed. Yes there are a few current blog posts but thats about it.

They have no graphics system, no professional equipment, nothing. Perhaps they'll have a 24/7 subchannel in TV market #200 but nothing mainstream. If this was a serious operation... upon any type of press release or announcement, there would be something out there other than a website that looks like it was built in Geocities. The post on their Facebook page just goes to further prove its a joke.

Local Forecasts in Storm Alert Mode 12/21/13

I actually really like this theme! Very nice

I'm noticing my IS is about 5 seconds late to start the local forecast and the national plays and then it's 5 seconds late to end. Is this a known issue or should I report it in the WeatherStar section?

I've heard of it happening before. Usually a unit reset fixes it. I'd pass it along to the support section if it's still occurring :)

IntelliStar 2 Discussion / Re: Intellistar Background suggestion...
« on: January 31, 2014, 01:06:00 AM »
From the mock-up video they did show Boston with the Skyline and the Prudential Tower so i'm not sure why they haven't integrated it.
One reason might be that these units typically serve huge areas. A cable headened isn't going to spend lots of money to install multiple units for each city. When people see images of another city... potentially 20-30miles away, they might get the wrong impression about the forecast. Still.... I would like to see custom images though for at least metro areas. I think its a cool idea  B)

IntelliStar 2 Discussion / Re: Intellistar Background suggestion...
« on: January 31, 2014, 01:01:27 AM »
As for the Boston mockup, keep in mind, it's probably not running on actual Intellistar 2 hardware.  Granted, the IS2 should theoretically be able to look like that, but I think they want to keep the IS1 and IS2 as identical as possible for some reason.

This could probably be a whole separate discussion in its own, but I've always wondered what the maximum capabilities of the IS and IS2 hardware are.  I'm assuming the IS2 is more powerful that the IS and can probably handle the animated backgrounds and such.  But it just confuses me to see these fancy, flashy mockups and then have the actual product be sub-par.  I'm pretty sure you're right in saying that the Boston mockup was not running on IS2 hardware, and I remember the mockup of the IS2 they made before it ever came out was not on IS2 hardware (I think someone mentioned After Effects).  So, to me, that sounds like the IS and IS2 cannot handle that much "pizzazz," if you will.
The proof of concept videos are typically made in a graphics editor like adobe, etc. Its one thing to make a pretty mockup but entirely different to program and code it for a working product. :) The IS2 can certainly handle a lot more than what its doing now in my opinion but thats by design. It's built to have a very long lifespan and needs to accommodate future unforeseen graphic needs. Also remember you don't want these machines running at 100% power all the time. Efficiency is important for longevity. It's quite amazing if you think about it... some of the machines have been running with fans blowing, drives whirling, etc for 10 years!! That's what I call a quality product.  B)

Emulator Videos / Re: IntelliSTAR "All the Time" Emulator
« on: January 31, 2014, 12:52:11 AM »
I'm not quite sure yet, I'm thinking along the lines of one of the Visual Studio Programs, maybe Java, or even XNA like the WS4000 emulator.  I'll keep you posted as I play around a bit...  I've created a primitive PowerPoint version just to get into the mindset the new graphics.  I can send you a link to the file or a video if you want to take a look... I hate PowerPoint emulators though so I definitely want to take this project above and beyond that.  Thanks for your interest!

This picture is a screenshot from my PowerPoint Emulation
What font is that out of curiosity?

Martin, I'm confused as to where that article mentions Mike Bettes leaving. I didn't see anything about that in there. :dunno:
I never say he was leaving the network but I doubt they will have a morning show with both Sam and Mike at the same time. I would guess he would move to a different time slot. WUWA remains the same.

Martin do you know what, if anything, is going to happen with Weatherscan?
No I haven't heard of anything. As far as I know there hasn't been any further development of that platform but I could be wrong. My guess is that it will be supported for a few more years and eventually discontinued.

Hate the radar on the SD IntelliStar. I can't even read the cities

Anyone else seeing black video on the SD feed with iStars?

This is one of the bugs I was told about. Remember the intellistars have basemaps that are around 2gb. Thats a lot of data that needs to be downloaded. The maps now aren't the final solution. Newer maps should populate over time though it could be a while.

A few of you are already seeing the new maps populate

1 more quick question.

Is it just "temporary" that the local on 8's play's this 1 single song repeatedly over and over again ??
yes
