General Discussion / Re: Old Weatherstar XL
« on: June 15, 2011, 12:05:01 AM »
Well, after thinking about trying to make a project out of these, I have decided to let them go. I have already made a deal with one of the members here for the XL in the rackmount case, and will be shipping that out tomorrow, but I have decided to put the other one on Ebay, so if anyone wants to get it, here is the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/WeatherChannel-Weatherstar-XL-Receiver-SGI-O2-/330577276966?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf7f0f026#ht_1973wt_1108

I should mention that this one stopped working on me today, it was working right along with the other one, but now it is throwing an error message, so be aware of that if you bid. (the other one still works fine BTW)

Zach, thanks for the interest in the graphics, but I can't really get them off, and hopefully the other forum member (you know who you are) that is getting the working XL can help you out with them.
You guys have been a help figuring out what to do with these, and I wish you all the best!
:-)

I noticed you have $70 for shipping. To my knowledge the parts you are shipping don't weigh more than 10lbs. The entire chassis perhaps would cost around $60-70 to ship since that weighs arouns 50lbs.

When it boots up, on the saga output, I can see that it is trying to FTP out and I assume get data... I wonder if I could get inside and change the FTP IP t o one on. Y own server, that way I could feed it anything I want.
I could even make it public, and then stream the output, so anyone could send data to it.
Maybe make it an online weather station with a bunch of random people feeding data to it?
Or maybe turn it into some kind of a message system and again stream the output.
That should be reasonably easy I would think..

Here is what Brian/cc17926 has done in regards to that.
Weather Star XL - 6/26/09

I don't think it is an easy task at all. Depends on how familiar you are with programming I suppose. In this scenario data is being exported from a program on a local networked computer and pushed to the XL. Notice the radar.

I checked out the emulation, and that's pretty cool you can do that. Is it for displaying your own weather station info? I mean is that why people make the emulations?

So what should I do with them? Play around, or just dump 'em on eBay?
What do you think?

Id hate to be greedy, but if you could send the slides to me as long as its fine with Martin.. i really wanna play around with them in after effects  :P and DO NOT put the graphics on eBay.. or else TWC will likely go after you  :hmm:

Slides? All of the graphics are in separate pieces. It's not really just one piece

I like this idea! How about on the forum's 4th anniversary on June 25th?
I like this idea! That would be a cool date to do it.

Thats pretty cool you were able to save it. Its sorta the situation I had when I got mine. The XL will loop the last forecast it have and then just show a black screen. Thats cool that the data was still stored. How familiar with programming are you? It is possible to modify the unit via software to accept outside weather data. It's not perfect but works.

Since I like country I actually might find this interesting. Anyways perhaps they are going to try and relate to the Nashville floods?

Weatherscan Discussion / Re: Weatherscan DISH network progress?
« on: May 30, 2011, 12:55:37 AM »
next generation Weatherscan

Weatherscan HD? (some time ago a there some roomer of a up coming channel with a name that may of been Weatherscan HD or some thing like WX HD) other listed in the past channels like MTV 2 HD and chiller HD where listed in a few places and never launched.

Weatherscan that can better cover a mero area with better working with stacked head ends?

Weatherscan 16:9 SD?
As mentioned before I HIGHLY doubt an HD unit would be created. I may be wrong but many cable headends are still in a tight bind for bandwidth and they wouldn't want to waste it on something that would work just fine in SD and that people wont be watching for long periods of time.

The world was supposed to end fifteen minutes ago in my time zone with a huge earthquake, and I haven't felt or seen a thing.  So, as one of your resident meteorologists here, I officially declare this prediction as:
(image)
Haha, win! This was the most overhyped false event I have ever heard. Even the radio stations here played marathons of songs pertaining to the "end of the world."

whatever the problem is, it's not TWC's fault. it's comcast.

people seem to be blaming TWC. honestly, i just don't think it's their problem.
Remember though TWC is trying to appeal to the customer (cable provider). It would be in their best interest to make the necessary changes for compatibility if they want to increase their market footprint. Both parties should work to reach a solution
