No, we have already confirmed she has not left on her on will.
Huh? As I understood it she did. TWC cut her down from full time to part time appearances and she decided to leave. I don't believe she was actually "fired"

Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion

How many times is TWC going to show the Stage Collapsing in Indiana?  they must be that desperate for viewership

How can you say that? This is a huge weather related story and one of the top stories around the country. I see no reason why they can't run the story a few times

There's many questions for this tragic incident. I am a little confused, as I heard on the news that a severe thunderstorm warning was issued 10 minutes prior to the stage collapse but that some people (don't know if it was meteorologists or maybe the concert crew) weren't expecting the storm for another 20 minutes. As soon as the warning was issued, the people should have evacuated. Actually, as Patrick said, the concert should have been cancelled as a severe thunderstorm watch was issued in plenty of time.

Bottom line is, I hope no one even thinks twice about blaming the meteorologists for this tragic event, because they predicted it and issued a warning prior to the storm's arrival. What more do people need? :club:

Take a look at this:

Quote
The stage toppled at 8:49 p.m. A timeline released by Indiana State Police shows that fair staff contacted the weather service four times between 5:30 and 8 p.m. At 8 p.m., the weather service said a storm with hail and 40 mph winds was expected to hit the fairgrounds at 9:15 p.m.

Bursten said fair officials had begun preparing in case they needed to evacuate visitors for the impending storm. At 8:30, additional state troopers moved to the grandstand to help in the event of an evacuation, according to the timeline.

http://www.theledger.com/article/20110815/APA/1108150538?p=1&tc=pg

The first you might think is that at 8pm officials should have called off the concert and indeed they probably should have. I have a friend in the entertainment industry who explained that it isn't so easy just to do that. The National Weather Service did their job but I also feel that the people in charge of the event were trying to do the best they could to respond to the situation. It is easy to point fingers and assign blame but I believe the best thing anyone can do is learn how to improve communications and try to prevent it from happening in the future. When you are dealing with tens of thousands of people it is hard to maintain a proper chain of command.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Re: What I'm enjoying here...
« on: August 15, 2011, 03:13:02 AM »
While conversations about TWC are certainly interesting, and give this forum a purpose, what I'm finding most interesting of all are the discussions about weather itself.  Of course, we're in the middle of hurricane season, and hurricanes have always been a passion of mine.  In fact, they're what got me interested in meteorology in the first place, starting with Gilbert in 1988 and becoming rock-solid with Hugo in 1989.  (I've mentioned it before, and I'll mention it again, but I still think TWC's documentary on Hugo, "Force Four," is probably the best documentary TWC has ever made.)  If it weren't for my total lack of math skills, I certainly would have become a meteorologist.  Even though I'll never become a professional, the weather still remains a serious passion of mine.

Anyway, thanks for many very interesting discussions.  Yes, we get a bit kvetchy at times, and, yes, we often wander into the realm of the bizarre, but it's all interesting reading, nonetheless.  :)
I am delighted you feel this way! Thanks for sharing your comments. I too enjoy the wide variety of topics discussed. It really has something for everyone! :)

General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch

The closed-minded American won't admit it, but we are probably one of the more rude countries out there. Sure, we think that since we're the United States, that we're the greatest country in the world (and face it, statistically, we're not), that our attitude and our way of living is the best out there. For those of you who have the opportunity to travel, please do. You'll realize how hospitable and pleasant foreigners are, and if you get them talking, how much they'll sometimes laugh at the smugness of the United States. I'm heading to Australia next semester for a few months, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have the same attitude towards the U.S. that some European folks have.
Guess I am a closed-minded American but I think you are taking that a little far. Americans are certainly rude sometimes but having been around Europe I can tell you it is not limited to here. Out of curiosity you say we are not statistically the greatest country in the world. What are you basing that on? Income? Health? Education? Its ignorant to think that we are superior to all other countries but it is also ignorant to ignore our importance in the world. If you look at all of Americas aspects I think its hard to argue that we are one of the greatest and most powerful countries in the world. That is no excuse to treat others like dirt but shouldn't be ignored either. When a major disaster occurs in the world who is the first country people look to? We are a great country and a great society. We certainly have our faults but so does the rest of the world.

Oh, the abuse of the anonymity of the internet is terrible.  Deaths have resulted.  But what can people do about it, really?  When left to police themselves, people just turn to the lowest common denominator as quickly as possible.  It's terribly sad.  This is the 21st century, and you'd think humanity would have evolved to be better than this by now.  Guess not.  When it comes down to it, humanity as a whole is still really just a bunch of apes who use their increased brainpower for evil rather than for good.
The internet is a tricky place. Should people behave as they do in real life or is it a chance for them to escape and be a different person? Personally I saw you should act as you do if you were talking to someone on the street. However it seems the majority think the latter. The internet to them is a place without boundaries and rules where people can be wild without consequences. In some area like gaming it might be appropriate but in online communities I think not. Putting all of that aside I think you are being a little pessimistic. Humanity is far from a bunch of apes and does much more good than evil. Take the stage collapse that just happened for example. Moments after it happened people rushed together to lift the stage pieces off of injured people. Just little moments like that show the true power of humanity. So while its easy to look at the internet or retail and loose hope, you can't judge humanity based on that alone.

At least there's some civility (or the expectation of it) somewhere in this world!  Years of working retail have taught me that manners just don't exist in this world anymore.  I've had some downright MISERABLE customers, many of whom are miserable just for the sake of being miserable, and especially because they know we sales associates just can't do a darn thing about it but stand there and take their abuse.  And some of that abuse gets ugly, let me tell you - to the point of having to go to court, even, to get it stopped.  And I've even seen with my own eyes how parents teach their kids how to be as rude to us as possible.  Now that's sad - teaching a child how to treat certain people much worse than they'd treat other people.  And why?  All because we work in a store?  Is that what "the customer is always right" means?  It's disgusting, but, sadly, there's not much I can do about it.  But the point of what I'm saying is that this happens not only in stores, but all throughout society, too.  People don't hold doors anymore, excuse themselves after burping or making other unfortunate biological noises, don't say "please" and "thank you," just bump past you on the sidewalk... the list can go on and on.  Do things REALLY have to be like this?  Really?  Why has society let itself get so rude, so lazy with manners, and, most importantly, so inconsiderate when it comes to other people?  At least my parents and my grandparents brought me up right.  I couldn't behave that way in public if my life depended on it.

 :offtopic:
Online its even harder to find it. I have always believed that being kind and polite will get your further in this world than mean and nasty. For now I haven't done much work in retail but I always treat those who I deal with with the respect they deserve even if they don't show it in return. You are correct about society we have lost our sense of morality and manners. Why just today I was at a department store and the women looked like I had stepped on her foot as she rang me up. I don't think its just America either. I have a friend who lives in Italy who wears her country is the worst. Haha! Its all a matter of viewpoint I suppose.

Hurricane Central / Re: Tropical Storm Gert
« on: August 15, 2011, 02:37:11 AM »
It's interesting (though not unheard of) that, so far this year, and we're already in the middle of August, none of the seven tropical storms have become hurricanes, and, in fact, there have been no depressions that haven't become tropical storms.

Of course, you can't judge a book by its cover, just as you can't judge a season in progress by the storms that have (or haven't) formed so far.  Look at 1992.  Andrew formed on August 16th, a very late start to the season as far as named storms, was the only major hurricane, was one of only two named storms (the only hurricane) to make landfall in the U.S., and yet it was quite a nightmarish storm.
Very true! We are still just getting into the peak season so it could still get very interesting.

We have Tropical Storm Gert. Should affect Bermuda by tomorrow morning. Max winds of 60 mph are anticipated.
I doubt they even get about 30 or 40. The wind field for tropical storm force winds is tiny and way offshore.

Seems to be the year for tropical storms

General Discussion / Re: NWS website redesign

I am just glad there was not an interactive map. The design is ok and I don't really have too many complaints. The core functionality and interface haven't radically changed too much. Have you seen the design change for the model page though? Now that is something I despise.

Btw in the blue box it says "Submit comments on the proposed design
Open through September 12th , 2011"

What happened?
It's a long story, and I really don't want to repeat it.  Just please observe this new rule so we can prevent some arguments and fights around here on controversial topics.
I wouldn't say its a new rule really. Personal attacks are not allowed and we will be making sure that the rule is enforced.

TWC Today News / Re: SMF 2.0 Upgrade
« on: August 15, 2011, 12:04:54 AM »
I thought all of the issues with the reply page were fixed now.  Mine has been working all this time on Firefox and IE with Tyler's theme, but this whole thing is a royal mess.  Sorry, Andy and Eric. :hmm:
The issue has been identified as a known issue with SMF. The issue is indeed there and the fact that some of you are not experiencing it may actually depend on different browser variations and etc. I believe I have found a solution so everybody simmer down now :P Hope to get it fixed by tomorrow

But what does your post mean?  The problem probably won't be fixed anytime soon, so those with a problem should either live with it or turn the feature off?
No it will be addressed and hopefully by the end of this weekend. Tyler made this skin so I was hoping he could have solved the problem but if he can't replicate it I will have to find some other solution

Well it's about time! Proposed NOAA Website design
http://www.weather.gov/redesign/

You can submit comments as well on the website redesign.

Good, looks like they arent going with an interactive map for warnings. Now if they could just do something about the model page redesign. ITS HORRIBLE! Sometimes simple is good.

Hurricane Central / Re: Hurricane Central 2011
« on: August 12, 2011, 04:39:52 PM »
It's nothing but fantasy now, but at least right now it's being consistent in a US landfall in about 10-14 days from now. Like I said before the GFS is good at sniffing out storms in the long range, it'll be interesting to see how things stand by this time next week with Invest 93L.
Also the model spreads for Invest 92/93 was probably an error w/ the Raleigh site, that's where I got them from.
Is it being consistent? At 0Z I saw the 300+ storm hitting Bermuda, 06z lost it, 12z was a gulf runner. Unless I am missing something it doesn't seem consistent at all
