This story about the bomb plot is interesting to me. According to the media "The 17-year-old has been charged with threatening to discharge a destructive device" along with some other drug related stuff which isn't relevant. How loose is the definition of threatening to discharge a destructive device? Is writing in a personal journal about these sick things considered the same as publicly saying it? There is no doubt in my mind  that the kid is messed up and probably better off in jail. It seems like there might be more to this story than the police are reporting at the moment.

The consistency of the GFS is rather interesting.

I am glad most of you feel positive about this. I made a small mention to keep requests to a minimum a few weeks back but it seemed to be ignored. The surge of activity from some new members has prompted a lot of requests. They didn't really know better so I don't place the blame on them.  Having the STAR Team participate is a wonderful opportunity for this forum. I am grateful to those individuals who take the time out of their busy schedule to visit here on almost a daily basis! Say what you want about the programming at TWC but the staff is some of the best in the industry.

I agree with this policy.

Some, but not all, of the requested changes have seemed somewhat frivolous and just an attempt to custom-tailor the Star to one person's personal preferences, ignoring the fact that many, many other people see the same Star, too.  I hope that my one request to reduce the amount of ocean on a map to less than 50% doesn't seem so frivolous in comparison.
Yes some people don't tend to think that others might not want to see a local forecast built around one persons location. As for your request I feel your pain. Living on the coast the IS maps get centered so that half is just water. Its probably just an automatic part of the configuration process. Not sure if they will change it for you since its something that affects a lot of other people

Whatever you just did fixed it for me. Tried to post something, wouldn't work so I refreshed, and it was back to normal! No more HUGE Quick Reply box!
No it was not fixed.

I will post when the issue has been corrected. Members do not need to report if the issue is affecting them.

Just a gentle reminder that if you wish to make a request to change your local forecast a moderator must now approve your request before it is posted. Contact one of us to see if your request is reasonable. Technical issues and errors are not being restricted. Immediate warnings or suspensions will be issued to those who fail to comply.

Thank you

TWC Today News / STAR Support Requests
« on: August 16, 2011, 01:46:22 PM »
The main purpose of the STAR Support Forum is to report errors with the local forecast. I have noticed the requests for changes has increased recently. Please be concise with your request and attempt to keep any requested changes in the first post. It is not acceptable to keep tacking on change upon change after your initial request has been made. Please remember that having the STAR team participate on this forum is a privilege and as such we should be mindful of our requests. Failure to abide by the rules of the STAR Support Forum will result in immediate suspension.

Thank you.

Guess I am a closed-minded American but I think you are taking that a little far. Americans are certainly rude sometimes but having been around Europe I can tell you it is not limited to here. Out of curiosity you say we are not statistically the greatest country in the world. What are you basing that on? Income? Health? Education? Its ignorant to think that we are superior to all other countries but it is also ignorant to ignore our importance in the world. If you look at all of Americas aspects I think its hard to argue that we are one of the greatest and most powerful countries in the world. That is no excuse to treat others like dirt but shouldn't be ignored either. When a major disaster occurs in the world who is the first country people look to? We are a great country and a great society. We certainly have our faults but so does the rest of the world.

I never said that we were a terrible rotten country with nothing to be proud of, nor am I trying to say that we have zero influence in the world. I'm not arguing that point. I'm merely trying to say that we, as a society, are a bit more rude than, say, the society of Japan, or France, or Germany. I just find it embarrassing what unbelievably poor manners I've seen when travelling around somewhere within the United States, and how polite and well-mannered many of the Europeans I have met have been (this is across 10 different countries). Are there exceptions to this? Certainly. But I'm saying in general.
Ohhh sorry it was late at night and I misinterpreted what you said! Sorry bout that :P

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Scott Lawrimore
« on: August 15, 2011, 02:53:56 PM »
Mr. Lawrimore seems to have been at it for a long time, long before he came to the Weather Channel. I was working as a local newspaper reporter in his hometown in the mid '80s, and his mother called me to suggest that we do an article about him. He used to put on a suit and do the weather forecast for his family every evening, using his computer; his brother helped him with the graphics. The whole family was just charming, and Scott was great, with remarkable presence for a young teenager. I was delighted to see him on the Weather Channel not long ago. Some people just know early on what they want to do with their lives!
Wow great story! Thanks for sharing :)

General Discussion / Re: NWS website redesign
« on: August 15, 2011, 02:52:37 PM »
The text for "Submit comments on the proposed design" is a link, and it will take you here for you to enter your comments:

http://www.weather.gov/survey/nws-survey.php?code=newwebdesign

:pinch: Didn't realize that was a link since it wasn't underlined. :nono: I think the design is really bland. And does the text really need to be that big!? The current one, though technically "outdated" looks much better in comparison.

Haha I know I usually look for the underline too!

How are all the local offices going to be able to get the upgrade? The reason I ask is because every office has their own unique layout.

That is an excellent question. I gathered from the link posted that the the forecasts were part of the skin. Patrick was explaining to me how its up to the regional weather offices. They really need to do something with those. The lack of continuity between how each office stores data is horrible. My office has random folders and names for everything. It's very hard to lookup old information

I ran across this article this morning, Warren Buffett, one of the richest men in the world urges congress to stop babying the rich and raise taxes on the rich to reduce the deficit.

Hope he can make a donation then!
