TWC and your Cable Company / Re: WOW! Cable is Going Digital
« on: September 02, 2011, 07:39:31 PM »
Some TVs now are starting to incorporate Cable Cards into their design so a cable box is not needed. For those who don't know a cable card is a device you rent from your cable company (just like you would your cable box) but it is usually a bit cheaper. Cable boxes are really just a rip off anyway. They are slow, underpowered and buggy.
The tv in my bedroom is hooked up to cable with a vcr and dvd player but I don't have a cable box. Does that mean that every tv in my house that has cable hooked up to it without a box will have to have a box? I sure hope not.
More than likely yes.

These threat level maps from TWC seem very confusing. I don't understand what "threat" they are depicting. To the average viewer it looks like the entire area is just going to get smashed. They should have specific maps for wind, rain, surge, etc.

Sorry I haven't posted too much. College starts for me tomorrow after the university was closed for several days due to Irene. My house and yard sustained quite a bit of damage and internet was just restored. Most of my time has been busy cleaning up. It is quite a mess. Hope everyone is doing well. I am reading most of the posts just haven't responded
Hope the damage wasn't too bad, Martin.  Your area and the Outer Banks certainly took the worst of Irene.
Lots of cleaning and lots of calls to contractors/electricians/plumbers/etc. Hatteras actually is cut off still as the road washed out. I believe by now they have a temporary ferry system setup but with limited resources and a 3 1/2hr trip it's just a mess.

While we are on the subject of college, I am going to take the time to be a little more "open" about myself. I don't want this to be extremely awkward, but I realize that I have never revealed my age or "level" in education. There is no good reason for this, but since I have reached a new stage in my life, I would like to share it with you all.

I just started college this year. I am studying meteorology at the University of Oklahoma and am, so far, very excited about it. For those of you who may not know, The National Weather Center is located on the campus, and it is both school-operated and government-operated. I believe Patrick visited there sometime earlier this year, if I remember correctly. Therefore, because of the location of The National Weather Center on campus, this university has a very good meteorology and research department. In addition, from looking at and hearing about past weather events, Norman gets all kinds of weather: tornadoes in the spring (something they specialize in), excessive heat in the summer, and winter storms in the winter.

I, too, would like to wish the best of luck for those of you who are also in their first year of college. :)
Congratulations! I know you will find college a lot of fun. You have the personality and dedication to excel in anything you put your mind to and I have the highest confidence you will succeed! Good luck :) I actually thought you were slightly older!

Couple timeouts now and then but seems snappy to me now. I will monitor the situation and report it to our host. Please post if it continues.

Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion
« on: August 27, 2011, 04:33:10 AM »
To me this coverage seems lacking. Do you notice that not one TWC OCM is going to be at the landfall of the storm? We are used to seeing Jim, Mike and Steph bracing hurricane force winds and bringing live coverage as the storm hits. I am unsure why TWC decided to report briefly on the OBX about the preparations then move everyone north before the storm hit. I guess they wanted their high ranking OCMs in the metropolitan areas of the NE to increase viewership

They might be skipping dedicated LFs to keep people interested and from switching to another channel to find Hurricane news. I find it annoying and hopefully for future events they will go back to the dedicated lfs. I always thought it made sense to keep the dedicated lf so they could have longer breaks and didn't have to create filler content.
