Curious since we were talking about discipline and schools.... What are your policies for electronic devices? When I was in public school they were completely banned. Kindles, iPods, Cell Phones, Laptops, etc. Security did random searches of classrooms and students every few weeks and if you were caught with one it was taken. First time you got it back at the end of the day, second a parent had to get it and third it became school property and kept until summer. Didn't matter if it was off, in your locker, pocket or backpack. I manged to get out of that situation by sticking my phone in my shoe. They wanded you with the metal detector but never bothered with shoes. Kinda dumb if they were trying to find weapons.

I thin the most annoying part about my high school was the tardy policy. If you were tardy you were not allowed to enter your classroom. You had to go to a table on each floor where an administrator noted your name and wrote you a pass. 3 times and you got saturday school and I think 7 was a suspension. Really sucked for morning classes.

Very true. In most cases, professors couldn't care less if you came in to class 5 minutes late, 30 minutes late, or skipped class altogether. I will say that some of my classes have attendance policies in which your average will drop a letter grade if you miss so many days of class.

But the most important thing to remember about college is that YOU are in control. No demerits, referrals, any of that. Disciplinary actions will either affect your grade or will involve a nice visit with the police if you decide to go to the extreme level such as drinking on campus.
Yea I have several that do attendance for that reason. A couple also just lock the door after 5minutes so your screwed if you are late. Seems fair enough.

School and discipline aside, I have fixed my warning feed on my Twitter and set up my room with fall decorations! Thank God I got the potpourri, it masked the grass smell in my fake moss which looks like I have weed all over my desk.
Miss the days of decorating my room :P Just don't have the time these days

It will be so cool if we see another winter of repeated fortnights of record cold and snow again :)
It would be cool (no pun intended) to see :P

After 25.5 days of hibernation, ladies and gentlemen, I have returned with a new laptop in tow!
Awesome! What did you get?

I had a creepy dream last night...

First, somebody sends me a message on Facebook that says, "i am rich! my friends, i will be by get my possessions soon!" I think he has the wrong person.

I then look out the window to see someone breaking into the house next door. We sneak out the back and call 911 and get our neighbor. All three of us get a gun. The idiot begins to break into my room (did I mention all of this in the broad daylight?). I don't recall anything else because I either woke up or the dream stopped like a film.

Now I'm paranoid.
Dreams can be crazy things :P

I am all for death of a criminal if he commits an unimaginable act like killing a cop or another respected figure, goes on a mass murder spree or does domestic terrorism.
Personally I value taking anyones life as an unimaginable act, not just if they are a cop or respected figure. I never understood why the legal systems values one life over another based on that. A life is a life. Doesn't matter if its Bob who works at the paper mill or Bob who is a famous actor.
No matter how heinous a crime is, or how evil a person is, I do not wish death on anybody. I have no bones about saying that. And imagine if years down the road, it was proved that Davis really didn't do it? They couldn't even find a weapon!!!!!!
So if I go kill 50 people for no reason at all in cold blood you support the government paying my food, water, clothing, medical care and security requirements for the rest of my life? Why not put that money towards the poor or programs to help troubled kids before they make a bad decision in life? I respect people who value life but if you are going to kill someone you forfeit the right to live in my opinion. The world is not perfect and we have to make tough decisions in life. The good of the masses sometimes outweighs the individual.

Now this is a heated topic and sensitive issues. We all have our different opinions and in this case I think we all need to agree to disagree. The porch is about to close so I suggest we talk about other subjects ;)

Local Forecast / Re: General LF Discussion
« on: September 21, 2011, 06:39:29 AM »
OK I guess I have to get into this. TWC doesn't do anything without lots of testing and a tooon of focus groups. If they are reducing the amount of locals its because they are getting enough statistical feedback to do so. The average user could care less about the music. In fact most people I know joke about it and dislike it.

We are living in a multitasking sort of life. I can look on my smartphone in about two seconds and find the local forecast for my area. TWC is evolving so that it offers content that is unique and attracts viewers. The new format for lfs offer more information at once to the viewer. And really what is the average viewer loosing my not having a full lf? A screen telling them they broke a temp record? Air quality information? Stuff the average person could care less about.

Now I am not a fan of the change either and I dislike them as much as you all do but posting endlessly about something you can't change is pointless. Make the comment and move on. Non stop speculation and bashing isn't productive. I highly encourage those who are interested in the older days of TWC and how things used to be to discuss it in the classics area or post about some of the things you really liked. No sense in always being so negative.

I'm not trying to be rude at all, in any way, but I'm honestly waiting for someone to say they're contacting a senator.

Lawsuits, trying to call a corporate office... and now petitions? Come on, guys. It sucks, it's annoying, I'm not a fan of it at all... but I honestly think most of you are more mad about the lack of music than the lack of local weather. It's The Weather Channel, not MTV. I've never talked to anyone, ever, that cared about the music they play during the LOT8's (including me) until I found this forum. They want to see the radar and what the forecast is. Let's face it, most of us are diehard TWC fans or we wouldn't care about coming to this forum. The majority of the viewing population is not. The best way to let them know you'd like the LOT8's back is to use their Feedback or Contact Us pages on weather.com.

Again, I'm not trying to be rude... but let's calm down a bit here.
Well said.

Perhaps they:
1. don't feel like getting involved with a semi-childish discussion (read, the classic "I'm removing TWC from lineup for [insert reason here])
2. They don't want to make a statement or comment until they have some solid information on the subject.
Check and Check ;)

General Weather Chat / Re: Farmers Almanac Winter 2012 Prediction
« on: September 21, 2011, 06:10:55 AM »
We can't accurately predict 12 hours out in advance in some circumstances, let alone 3 months.

The biggest argument of climate change right there.

Very true! This might be a dumb question, but I'm guessing these outlooks are supposed to be a general look at the overall winter? But how can you give a general outlook for a season? Because weather in the south, especially, can be very, very inconsistent during the winter season. For example, Dallas saw a major ice storm and snow burst in February of this year, whereas at the same time it was also 82 degrees later that month. I'm pretty sure no Farmer's Alamanc could predict that. What would they say: warm and icy? :P And yes, these are two specific examples, but many winters in Dallas are often all over the place: we'll have our unseasonably warm days, our average days, and our ridiculously cold days. So essentially, you can't put an "outlook" to that. As you said Tavores, it's sometimes very hard to predict weather hours or a few days in advance, so I don't really understand the purpose of the Farmer's Alamanc. I guess it's to provide some outlook, just so people know what to expect. However, people need not rely on it too much because it has the potential of not being accurate.

Yes it is intended for a general outlook on winter. People aren't supposed to look at these maps and stock up on snow shovels and salt.  My area has those same shifts you mention for Dallas but if you look at the average temperature on a monthly basis, the +/- departure from average shows a clearer picture. The argument that these maps can't be right because we can't predict the weather 12 hours from now is a bit flawed. We can look at weather patterns and get a general idea if it is going to be colder/warmer or wetter/dryer over certain regions. That is very different than forecasting the exact precip amount and temperature for a specific point.

These forecasts are important for people to perhaps plan ahead for additional heating costs,  farmers to take extra precautions, and so forth. It isn't just the farmers almanac that does these either. I am sure you have seen the outlooks from NOAA. http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/ As for the farmers almanac they tend to look at past trends to make their forecast. Sometimes they get it right other times they are way off. I put more stock in the forecasts from the CPC.
