General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch
« on: July 16, 2012, 03:02:52 PM »
But, we can still talk about classic TWC in a positive matter, right? I'm not longer a fan of present TWC programming and haven't since probably 2007 (only watched for LFs after that), but that doesn't mean my interest in classic TWC will ever go away.
Oh of course! My point really is that the repeated negativity thats recently been going on isn't productive and no longer adds to the conversation. I highly encourage everyone to share and comment on classic moments they like. Talk about the TWC you liked not the one you dislike :)

I, too, want to apologize to anyone who thinks we are acting like tyrants.  But I hope you can understand that these posts about how much one person thinks TWC sucks (that, let me add, often turn into arguments and heated debates) are really bringing the forum down.  And that's what the admins/mods are trying to prevent.
Exactly. The atmosphere here is supposed to be about the passion and love for TWC classic and current. The forum isnt meant for people to simply bash the network for everything it does. I and others would like to see a return to focusing on the positive aspects of TWC rather than the negative. Find something you enjoy or enjoyed and start a conversation about it!

Looks like Massachusetts isn't getting the IS2 anytime soon, Xfinity hasn't ordered any units for the New England Area yet.
That stinks!

He wants to see far less complaining about it from here on out, or he's going to take a lot more action in the near future.

This statement worries me.  Does it mean that "fans" aren't allowed to have complaints about the current direction of the network?  Or, let me phrase it another way... Are "fans" supposed to be those who support the network in its current incarnation without longing for a return to how it was pre-NBC?  I used to be a fan of The Weather Channel, but I'm sure as heck not a fan now that it's turned into an entertainment network.

You are no longer a fan of the current network if you no longer have anything positive to contribute towards it. Sorry but thats simply how I see it. If you no longer like something you can't call yourself a fan of it. This forum was established to find like minded people who enjoyed various aspects of The Weather Channel... not to complain about how its not being run to your satisfaction. Some of you dislike the programming, OCMs, music, local forecasts (or lack thereof), etc. What do you actually like then? This board has a close community that likes to interact about personal and off topic issues. While thats fine it can't be the main reason the forum exists. If there are no longer any fans of The Weather Channel then this forum serves no purpose and should cease to continue operation or at least become archive only. You all should try to look on the bright side of the changes since there is little you can do to turn back the clock.

General Discussion / Re: DirecTV vs Viacom
« on: July 11, 2012, 01:04:14 AM »
Wow guess I was long. Though I don't think it will last long

http://blog.viacom.com/2012/07/directv-drops-26-viacom-channels/

"The eleventh hour has come and gone and, unfortunately, the unthinkable has happened.

At approximately 11:50 p.m., DirecTV dropped 26 Viacom channels, including:

Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, BET, VH1, CMT, Logo, Spike, TV Land, MTV2, VH1 Classic, Palladia, Nick Jr., NickToons, TeenNick, Nickelodeon West, Tr3s, Centric, MTV India, Nickelodeon HD, Comedy Central HD, MTV HD, BET HD, VH1 HD, CMT HD and Spike HD.

DirecTV dropped the channels without giving Viacom advanced warning.  The last time Viacom was contacted by DirecTV was at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Here’s the official statement from Viacom:

We are deeply disappointed that DirecTV dropped Viacom’s channels before our midnight deadline this evening, severing our connection with its nearly 20 million subscribers nationwide.  We proposed a fair deal that amounted to an increase of only a couple pennies per day, per subscriber, and we remained willing to negotiate that deal right up to this evening’s deadline.  However, DirecTV refused to engage in meaningful conversation.  We are hopeful that DirecTV will work with us toward a resolution, and stop denying its subscribers access to the networks they watch most."

So who thinks a blackout will actually happen tonight on DirecTV of all of the Viacom owned stations?

I predict a press release around 10pm with both sides claiming to have saved the day in the name of consumers

This was a programming guide error right?
Yes, that's an error.  Al Roker is not a meteorologist  <_<

I know you're being sarcastic, but I hope you know what I meant was the error was the fact that WUWA was showing up as airing at 11am.
Well he actually isn't but I am sure thats just an error

I would like to add that if you have a problem with an administrative action that you should contact the staff directly rather than make a public post about it. In this case I hope it clears the issue up for you and other members. Post like these are left up to the discretion of the staff.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Re: Weather app
« on: July 08, 2012, 04:46:36 PM »
It doesn't help that HamWeather has seen a major overhaul and now only has a limited free version. I don't even know where to begin to find a solution just from looking at their website.

It would also appear that while their website lists a Spring 2012 release date, a php version of the software isn't avaialble yet. I cant even find a mention of the software we are using much less support for it.

Yeah, as I noted in The Front Porch yesterday, it appears these current conditions went out the day in which the NWS converted to their new website design.  It may just be a coincidence since I don't see how a design change can affect something like this, but I still think that's what caused it.  We're just going to have to be patient and see if the problem fixes itself, or if Martin can somehow look into this further.  Thank you.
Sadly its not. Not content on the overhaul of their website, the NWS had to tinker around with things that affected most scripts and programs that get weather content from them. Its odd because I don't see the reason behind messing with this as it wasn't needed for the main website update.

Here is one of my favorite music sets used by one of the local stations down here in the 90s. I think the footage used was amazing as well.

General Discussion / Re: NWS website redesign
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:31:17 PM »
I'm going to clear up some things here.  This redesign was only for weather.gov alone.  The other NWS sites are on separate servers and domains, so they can't be changed right away.  Everything always takes a long time for many reasons, including feedback and testing along with final approval from national headquarters.  You all need to check the link I placed below and read what the bigger picture is on this whole redesign project.  What you're seeing is simply the first phase, but it's going to take a while for everything to take shape:

http://www.weather.gov/redesign

Sure I get that but why stretch it out? Why not just wait until everyone is caught up or ready to start updating? It seems confusing from a user point of view to have these drastic changes in layout just when navigating the site.

At the very least make it so that you only get to the old layout if you specifically want to get more info from the forecast office. Like I said before, to see one of the advisories on the the map located at weather.gov you have to go from then new layout, to the old one, to the new one. Surely they could find a way to make it smoother.
