ALEX HAS BECOME MUCH BETTER ORGANIZED THIS MORNING BASED ON
WELL-DEFINED BANDING FEATURES WRAPPING INTO THE CENTER AND THE
APPEARANCE OF A SMALL EYE IN INFRARED IMAGERY. AN AIR FORCE RESERVE
UNIT RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT AT 0842Z MEASURED A CENTRAL PRESSURE
961 MB AND 850 MB FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS OF 82 KT IN THE NORTHEAST
QUADRANT. THE SFMR ABOARD THE PLANE MEASURED A RELIABLE SURFACE
WIND OF 62 KT AND A RAIN-CONTAMINATED PEAK WIND OF 71 KT. THE
DVORAK INTENSITY ESTIMATE FROM BOTH TAFB AND SAB WAS T4.5/77 KT.
THEREFORE...THE INITIAL INTENSITY IS CONSERVATIVELY INCREASED TO 70
KT FOR THIS ADVISORY.

ALEX HAS WOBBLED WEST-NORTHWESTWARD OVER THE PAST 6 HOURS...AND EVEN
BRIEFLY STALLED. HOWEVER...TRENDING THROUGH THE SATELLITE AND RECON
FIXES YIELDS AN AVERAGE MOTION OF 290/06. UPPER-AIR OBSERVATIONS AT
00Z INDICATED MODEST 10-30 METER HEIGHT RISES FROM 700-400 MB
ACROSS THE GULF COAST FROM LOUISIANA TO FLORIDA...BUT ALSO TO THE
NORTHWEST AND WEST OF ALEX ACROSS TEXAS MEXICO TO THE WEST. THIS
MEANS ALEX IS EMBEDDED BETWEEN TO RIDGES AND IN A WEAKER STEERING
FLOW REGIME THAT NONE OF THE MODELS PICKED UP ON IN THE SHORT TERM.
HOWEVER...ALL OF THE GLOBAL AND REGIONAL MODELS ARE CONSISTENT ON
BRINGING A MID-LEVEL RIDGE FROM WESTERN NEBRASKA SOUTHEASTWARD TO
THE TENNESSEE VALLEY DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS...WHICH SHOULD ACT TO
STEER ALEX ON WEST-NORTHWESTWARD TRACK FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS AND
THEN WESTWARD ACROSS NORTHERN MEXICO AFTER THAT. THERE HAS BEEN AN
INTERESTING CHANGE IN THE 00Z AND 06 MODEL GUIDANCE WITH THE ECMWF
SHIFTING FARTHER NORTHWARD...WHICH MEANS THIS MDOEL HAS GONE FROM
BEING THE PERSISTENT LEFT-MOST OF THE MODELS TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF
THE MODEL SUITE...AND IT NOW HAS A TRACK SIMILAR TO HWRF. THE
OFFICIAL FORECAST TRACK HAS BEEN SHIFTED SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT OF
THE PREVIOUS TRACK BASED ON THE MORE NORTHWARD INITIAL POSITION...
AND REMAINS NEAR THE EXTREME RIGHT SIDE OF THE GUIDANCE ENVELOPE
AND NORTH OF THE MODEL CONSENSUS.

VERTICAL SHEAR IS FORECAST TO REMAIN LIGHT UP UNTIL LANDFALL OCCURS
IN ABOUT 24 HOURS. GIVEN THAT ALEX IS ALSO MOVING SLOWLY OVER SOME
OF THE WARMEST UPPER-OCEAN HEAT CONTENT IN THAT REGION OF THE GULF
OF MEXICO...STEADY STRENGTHENING RIGHT UP UNTIL LANDFALL SEEMS
REASONABLE. HOWEVER...GIVEN THE RELATIVELY LOW CENTRAL PRESSURE
RECENTLY MEASURED BY THE RECON AIRCRAFT...RAPID INTENSIFICATION OF
AT LEAST 30 KT IN 24 HOURS IS A DISTINCT POSSIBILITY. THE OFFICIAL
INTENSITY FORECAST IS A BLEND OF THE LGEM AND SHIPS MODELS

Ive heard some talk about not even doing the drilling moratorium. Is it just me or does the news just keep getting worse??
Actually things are improving. A lot more oil is being collected before it gets into the gulf and BP hopes to get somewhere close to 90% of it collected within a few weeks

I loved driving along that bridge and tunnel along the mouth of the Chesapeake. Wish I took pictures.  :hmm:
Oh the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Quite an engineering marvel there. Its nearly 18 miles!

I hate when there's so much clutter on the screen that you can't focus on one thing for long. Including weather and traffic conditions isn't very relevant for a cable sports channel.
Its like those Japanese/Chinese tv shows!

During a commercial at 12:16AM CDT on 6/29, my XL's Black Bar LDL made a 3 second appearance.  :dunno: This is not a joke, and I wasn't seeing things. It was a very exciting 3 seconds! lol. I wish I had been recording it.
Brian confirmed to me earlier that this did happen. I imagine it was some mistake
I thought Brian cued his XL LDL by himself?
Yes but he noticed something was randomly cued by TWC themselves last night

Oh neat! Where did you go down there?
We stayed somewhere just outside of Cape Hatteras, forget what it was called... but it was a HUGE mansion we rented (we went with my mom's two other sisters and their families) somewhere in the open by the beach. Had have been worth over a few million (had three floors, 7 bedrooms). I know we visited Cape Hatteras, Kitty Hawk, and I think Nags Head. We also went up that lighthouse you visited as well.
Ah yes sounds like Avon or Frisco. The houses in that area are quite nice.

I must agree with both of you that the Outer Banks is a great place to visit when there's no hurricane around.  I've been through Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, and Cape Hatteras.  I even rode on a boat through Oregon Inlet for a fishing trip to the Gulf Stream years ago.  Yes, the water is pure blue and beautiful once you get out there. B)
Oh very nice Patrick. Kitty Hawk is fantastic. Duck and Corolla are by far my favorite places on the Outer Banks. Oregon Inlet is cool too! That long bridge is quite fun to drive along. Glad you got a chance to do that :)

Nice! I'm glad you had fun camping! I was up in canada for the weekend for a little family reunion and it wasn't bad..considering the scenic road trip. B)
Thats awesome. I hope you had fun :)
The Outer Banks are nice, I was there back in 2003. It was hot when we were there though. Glad you had fun! :)
Oh neat! Where did you go down there?

Can somebody find out whether or not they are going to keep Gold or if it will change or not? I rely on this a lot for my school's morning show.
TWC I am sure will want to keep making as much money off their products as possible. I am sure you will still have Gold. If I may ask why do you have Weather.com Gold? I didn't think it offered anything that special. I use ad filters to prevent websites from loading ads anyway so that doesn't seem very worth it for that.

Yeah. Is there something hindering the strengthening of Alex? :dunno: I thought it was going to strengthen a lot faster and become stronger, but now it's already out over the open waters.
There is quite a bit of dry air wrapped in the system

This update has been long overdue, especially since Accuweather and other competitors have worked to make very Web2.0 friendly sites
