General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:42:06 PM »
Hey everyone, I know I don't post much, if at all, but I've got a question.  You've all been (or still are) in elementary school/early junior high/middle school.  I'm an instructor at a local daycare, and we're doing a weather/seasons week soon.  My question is, do you all have any ideas of simple, inexpensive activities that relate to weather that I could do with the kids?  Thanks for your suggestions in advance!  PM me if there's an idea or few that you've got!

PS:  the age range of the kids is 5 (kindergarten) through 12.
The classic Tornado in a bottle (when you attach two 2 liter bottles together) is always fun! I remember doing that in elementary school. Its a cheap and neat activity to try :)

My science teacher bought these things that screw the two bottles together...I think they're from Steve Spangler. No guarantees on its origin, but it's a lot less messy.
Duck tape works too :P

TWC Today News / Re: Profile Modifications
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:40:06 PM »
Hey Tyler... I noticed that when you can select your STAR in your profile. you have the IntelliStar 2 and the regular IntelliStar. I thought I read something on some other forums on the internet that if the company has TWC HD, they need to Intellistar 2 (That is, if I read your post correctly). So, how would that work if people had both? (And it may have been dslreports.com).
I have no idea what you are asking

General Discussion / Re: Firefox Beta 4
« on: July 07, 2010, 05:45:01 AM »
I used to love Firefox, but grew to dislike it because it used a downright outrageous amount of resources. I'm going to give this version a try though and see if they've done anything about that yet.
Exactly why I got away from it. Chrome is soo light on resources. This version is better but still leaves room for improvement.
The resident Firefox Guru has this to say... I tried it this weekend... a lot of my extensions don't work, that's to be expected. They redesigned a lot with it. Seeing as how they skipped the alpha stage and went RIGHT to beta, I would proceed to use Firefox 4.0 with caution. I will have more to say when I have time this weekend to play with it.
Wasn't Minesfield just like an Alpha? I used a few versionsfrom Mozilla nightly build ftp. A couple weeks ago they added the new skin.

Seems that NBC just wants to forget about the old TWC...
Depends on how you define the "old TWC". NBC just took a more direct approach at moving the networks direction. TWC (pre-NBC) was slowly introducing more long form and they even first started the idea of movies.

Jim is pretty much the "face" of The Weather Channel, so I HIGHLY doubt they will let him go. ;)

As for Stephanie, heck, is she even around at TWC anymore or on assigment somewhere else? Who does WUWA now? I never watch it (nor will I) to find out.
Mark my words.... Jim Cantore will NEVER  be let go from TWC. The only chance he has of getting axed is if he asks for too much money and even then I doubt he wants to loose his image. TWC has purposely built a base around Jim and Stephanie because they need a way to market the channel and network. Showing those two faces on long form and major events does the trick.  Its branding and marketing! Stephanie is there more often then you think but true it seems like she isn't around much. Mike or Jen will usually fill in on WUWA.

Everything Else TWC / Re: Redesigned website coming soon!
« on: July 06, 2010, 08:28:10 PM »
I remember there being issues with the forecasts on the early versions of the website. There seemed to be a mismatch between what was shown on the website and what was on tv. I'm mainly talking about individual location forecasts (by city or zip code).
That always will be the case. Online forecasts are just generated automatically. Plus you have to take into account HiRad and other manipulation TWC does with their weather data. NWS is still the best place for weather info

If only the real thing could look like that!
Maybe it will look like it...
Haha most likely no but wishful thinking. TWC needs to hire Tyler to do the graphics!

This heat and this humidity is just murder.  Not to mention the air conditioning is out of order at work, so I sit all day in a 90-something degree office.
Actually your humidity is only in the 30s with a dew point in the mid 60s. This is a mainly dry heat for most in the Northeast for today.

Does anyone miss the previous icon set?
Yea but the past is the past I suppose. Funny how everyone "hated" the previous icon set and now that the icons have a more XL look people still hate them  :hammer:

Weather.com is served by hundreds of servers. Its possible some of the load is being upgraded while the rest remains normal.

On the contrary I believe costs have little to do with this. NBC wants their own people in there and are kicking out most of the older folks. As Rich Johnson said on this issue "NBC is methodically putting its own stamp on the weather channel".
