Programming and Graphics / Re: The Weather Channel - LIVE ON YOUTUBE

Now, there is a stream that seems to be online only, showing severe coverage.  "WATCH LIVE: Severe Storm Coverage:" http://youtu.be/cei3uGi1nFU

Pro tip if you ever go into the tv biz.... if you are wearing a mic ALWAYS assume it's live. I heard a few cuss words dropped in some of the convo when they were "off air" in that clip from the stream. Oops!

Watching this one closely

Seems like a lot of fuss over nothing.

I deal with a lot of comments from viewers at the station who simply are nasty and negative because they can. If the councilman had expected a legitimate and honest response then publicly tweeting to his followers "Dear @weatherchannel I SWEAR I'm deleting your aggravating app if you don't STOP SHOWING DALLAS pics for Fort Worth " Isn't the best way to do so. Should I really expect to feel sorry that TWC can't program every single city image into its app? The app isn't to provide you with pretty pictures of cities but rather to show weather information.

Don't forget there is a lot of really old legacy equipment that has to be maintained on TWCs end to keep data flowing to the older systems. To be honest it's an amazing technological feat that systems 10-20 years old are still functioning.

They put the list up on Spotify https://play.spotify.com/user/theweatherchannel/playlist/2B6ZJhWrp5iRQ5n3JXgTM6
Pretty neat!

There's a Twitter account for the music now.

https://twitter.com/wxchannelmusic
This looks like a fanpage, not an official one. BTW, has anyone heard any instrumentals ?
Actually its legit! Apparently the two production tracks are called "Clouds May Come" & "Tomorrows Sunrise"

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: DirecTV Dropping TWC

I hate to break it to you folks but The Weather Network isn't happening.

I'm assuming you meant Network Weather?  Isn't The Weather Network Canada's version of TWC?  (Ha, maybe the fact that they couldn't even come up with an original name is a bad sign.)

Anyway, while I agree with what you said, I am a little confused as to why they would make all this stuff up.  It appears they have a lot of followers - I think it would be such a stab in the back to say that this was all a joke. But does that mean that the entire "company" is vanishing, or just the fact that going 24/7 on air just won't become a reality while they still do online, quick forecasts?
Lol yes thats what I meant. :P

If it was a professional operation with real capital and financial backers... then you would see a professional website and marketing. Why would someone do it? Sadly for the same reason there are so many false stories on the internet... to get attention. TWC was going through an unpopular time and claiming that a competing product with more weather info was about to premiere was bound to get a lot of attention.   :noexpression:

Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion

While I'm sure not everybody is happy, i'm impressed to see the strides the network has made to include more weather (when warranted). Whether you agree or disagree with the naming of winter storms, its allowed them to organize and execute more winter weather coverage.

So now we have two TWC broadcaters who have their own show but don't have an actual meteorology degree. Perfect!  (Sarcasm)

That begs the Question: Why did WABC/GMA & WNBC/Today Hire them?
Couple reasons probably......

When he came to WABC in 1988 there weren't many meteorologists with degrees on tv. In fact if you look at a lot of chief meteorologists across the nation... you would be surprised at the number who didn't initially have a degree when they started out on air. In a way it makes sense considering the technological limits. With no easy way to get forecast data or reliable radar/model data.... tv stations heavily relied on third party sources for weather forecast data.

Also there simply weren't that many meteorology graduates. Today I would say its nearly impossible to start out in the business with no degree.... unless you are REALLY good looking :P

Sam got promoted from a station in KY to WABC. That NEVER would happen today. It's unheard of to go from a weekend wx person in market 81 to an on air personality in the #1 market in America. Once he got to WABC there really wasn't a huge need for someone with extensive weather knowledge. NYC doesn't exactly have lots of major weather events. Therefor he was able to build up an image and personality that took him to where he is now.

Al Roker and Sam Champion are a rare exception in the tv industry. I think both have worked hard and after doing weather for 30+ years I'm sure they have picked up quite a bit of knowledge. That being said I hope equal air time is dedicated to the existing degreed mets on the network

I'm sure he will appear on any network that brings some $$. Storm chasing isn't quite a profitable business....especially these days. Plus the more air time means more brand image which is always good too! Interesting to hear that WNs severe weather coverage was lacking. It's a shame but thats where TWC and its massive affiliate network really comes in handy.

Welcome to the forums btw B)

Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion

I know we can't satisfy everyone, but I feel that TWC is now "over-doing" Storm Mode.  I don't mind the extra coverage, but do the black and red colors and the special music really need to be used?  I mean, come on.
I've had to deal with sorta the same thing at my station. We report the weather accurately but news tries to make everything into a big deal sending reporters out everywhere, etc. It's just the nature of the business now. Remember these events generate big ratings. Sweeps just started up so you can expect local and cable news networks to go all out these next few weeks on every story.
