Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion
« on: August 24, 2012, 11:39:14 AM »
I hope I'm not the only one, but that is really weird and exciting at the same time. Definitely going to make sure to tune in the next few days. It's not odd from a stand point of covering weather, but from a 'political' stand point... It seems a bit awkward.

What do you mean? Are you saying that because they didn't send him on assignment to Tampa?

EDIT: I wonder where they'll send Jim and when?

I'm pretty sure he means it's because typically reporters are not allowed in to the country to do reporting, especially live, from Cuba. Everything they do is monitored carefully by their government. From their words to their actions, anything can be shut down at any time and they can be forced out of the country, or arrested, for saying the wrong thing. It is not like America with freedom of press.

I'm just wondering why they didn't do it the weeks leading up, and during, the Olympics coverage. That way they would come back to the new studio when Abrams made the move and Al was back from London. Maybe because of the work they were doing to the Today show studio front?

But tell us how you really feel. :P I don't think they're overhyping it. We'll wait and see what ends up really happening, I suppose. Needless to say I'm tuned in and watching and I live in Topeka, KS!

Wow. Our local CBS affiliate just upgraded their weather computers from Weather Central to go HD. They're still setting them up and training on them, so they haven't even premiered yet!

Weatherscan Discussion / Re: Weatherscan Topic

I agree with Nathan. I think it should say a warning has been issued. The whole reason it does it is for the blind. It needs a lot more narration on the channel. Maybe that will be a part of the next version?

I thought he looked familiar!!! He was a fill-in meteorologist at KTKA-TV here in Topeka, as well. For a while the same company that owned 6 News Lawrence (a cable-only, low viewed station that was only available in Douglas County, KS) also owned KTKA (ABC). So while they were in a very bad slump of revolving door personalities they had him fill in as morning or weekend meteorologist sometimes.

My suggestion: "All the icons on TV, website, and apps, should have the same icons for weather conditions."
Response: "We agree with your suggestion. This is something that we have begun to work on but will take time before all the icons have been updated. Thanks for your recommendation! Steve Windham Director, Local Programming, The Weather Channel"

Weatherscan Discussion / Re: Weatherscan Topic
« on: July 24, 2012, 02:20:00 AM »
It's 1:00am CT and our Weatherscan is just a black screen. Is anyone else not getting Weatherscan right now? I called Cox and of course they told me it's most likely a problem on my end. I asked if she'd submit the problem to the engineers and she said she would. (I doubt she will.) It was working fine earlier. It doesn't even give me a no signal screen from the digital box.

EDIT: After two calls to Cox (and them telling me it's on my end) and a post on their Facebook page (with more understanding people that reported it to the engineers), it's back up and running as of Noon CT 7/24/12.

Everything Else TWC / Re: Drought 2012

I live in Topeka, KS... I have a crack in my backyard on the outside of my fence that would swallow my yellow labrador. There's massive cracks in the soil everywhere. Nothing is growing. All the grass is wheat colored. I haven't mowed in a month. We barely had any crops this year on our farm just to the north of us. We're being put on voluntary water restrictions and being told that it could go further soon. It's been over 100 degrees for weeks and the entire forecast is nothing but over 100, including 113 Sunday. (One of our local meteorologists said he's been here for 9 years and has never put 100+ on every day for an 8-day forecast since he's been here.) It's mentally and physically exhausting and everyone is starting to get incredibly mad in general due to the heat. It rained the other day for the first time in weeks. It rained .18" and before that we got 1.50" in about half an hour over a 2 mile radius that fell so fast it all ran off. Before that, we haven't had more than a couple hours of rain all spring and summer. There's no chance of rain in the forecast in the next 8 days. I don't think it's being over-hyped when you live in the area it's taking hold, and by the looks and sound of it, it's expanding. Does it compare to the dust bowl days? Not right now, but with the forecast models showing not much, if any, change in the pattern, who knows what it'll be like in a month or two. August is statistically our hottest month. It's not even the end of July yet.

Looks horrible with it taken from my iPhone, cropped, then resized. Sorry. :/

By the way... it also shows up on weather.com, except it's on Tuesday, July 24.

We're getting the red "bar" for Monday on our LOT8's now due to "continuing drought conditions will persist on MONDAY." First time I've seen it activated for anything other than severe or tropical weather.

There was another new Station ID I saw on TWCHD this morning of a beach and a small boat sitting idle out in the water with cumulonimbus clouds overhead a blue sky.

I saw that yesterday.

Speaking of the station ID segment, is anyone else besides me seeing that the cable company logo/channel number as well as the radio station ID cards aren't showing at all during the recent ID segments with the new backgrounds?

Not getting station ID's here in Topeka, so you're not the only one.

If you're talking about "Hit the Road" segments, they're advertised. Much like The Home Depot tips of the week. Not to mention the whole grilling thing they do outside on weekends.
