For older STARs, they have to use a microprocessor controller. For the newer STARs, they just configure it either through the STAR itself, or from the STAR's internet configuration.

Dan, i'm not really sure how far you are, but if you'd be willing to get a good deal on one, theres a great electronics store in Mt. Prospect called Tri-State Electronics. THey have just about every kind of adapter there, for really cheap prices. Or if thats too far, you could get it on the internet. 
However, no matter what, i don't think theres a way to get an "authentic" stereo output, with this or any method.
