52° Sunny. Nice and crisp morning after a low of 31 last night.
Brrrrr, that's too cold for me at this early in the season. I already start freezing my butt off when it's only 60 degrees out. I guess it's because I'm so used to overnight lows in the 60's and 70's.

79.9°F Mostly Sunny

Glad to be going to the 4th Tri-state Weather Conference on October 13th. Going to this conference will expand my knowledge and meet new people. WCBS-TV's primetime on-air meteorologist Lonnie Quinn will be there, a great opportunity for me to begin networking.

Sorry to keep you busy in this thread, but can you explain to me what exactly is the difference between "stable" air and "unstable" air? I'm quite curious about this, I would also like to know how higher instability favors stronger thunderstorms. Thanks Pat.

Today is the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. My thoughts go out to all of the families and victims. United we stand  :salute:

Second that. And anyone around the New York area, while we're at it, how is the new WTC complex looking? I've seen photos of WTC 1 and it looks stunning.  :o
It's absolutely amazing. I was in NYC on Sunday and the first building you could see while driving in from the east was WTC 1. It already surpassed the Empire State Building in terms of height and it's almost complete. I don't have any very recent pictures, I do have some pictures of WTC 1 and the whole complex from July though.

67.1°F Partly Cloudy

Some very strange weather phenomena is going on right now. About a half hour ago, winds were calm then all a sudden a gusty NW wind comes through. Some weather stations on parts of the island recorded a temperature increase, radar showed some thundershowers south of here and moving SE, keep in mind, NO showers or thunderstorms were in the forecast. This leads me to think that maybe land breeze shower formed. There were some showers NW of the area earlier today and they may have moved into our area so it may not be a land breeze shower, but that still doesn't explain the temperature increase. My best conclusion for the temperature increase would be a from a small heat burst from the depleting showers coming in from the NW. Air temperatures over the ocean have increased several degrees even after sundown.

A week and a half ago, I made a post stating how cold it was going to get. But now it really is going to get cold! In the LI Pine Barrens, EXTREME radiational cooling will take place, dropping low temps into the LOW 40's! Coastal locations are expected to stay in the mid to upper 50's, where I'm at, low to mid 50's. Here's the NWS forecast for my area then below it, the forecast for the pine barrens.

Severe Weather / Re: Severe Weather Season 2012
« on: September 08, 2012, 01:15:35 PM »
A tornado touched down in New York in Brooklyn. Also another possible tornado struck off the coast near Rockaway Beach. I am looking at the photos and that thing looks scary and frightening. There's no doubt that's a tornado - classic funnel shape http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/tornado_hits_beach_off_coney_island_O8QHGmMoi04EUCFQFD333O?utm_medium=rss&utm_content=Local

It was only one tornado from what I believe because it was only one storm that issued the warning, if anything, the tornado may have dissipated and then reformed but most likely was not the case.

Has anyone else seen this text forecast "and possibly a tornado with some storms". I just saw this on my IS2 today. I wonder if it happens to anyone else.  :dunno:

Northeast Severe Weather Outbreak - 9/8-9/9/2012

**This discussion will mainly be based off of Long Island.

Severe Weather Outbreak possible this afternoon and tonight. Out ahead of frontal boundary, moderate 20-25kt sustained surface winds will develop, primarily in coastal locations. Gusts could be as high as 40kts excluding thunderstorm wind gusts. Thunderstorm wind gusts could be as high as 60-70kts. Isolated tornadoes are possible. Given the timing, Long Island will be most impacted tonight between 8PM-3AM. **Tornado warnings have already been issued for Long Island, this is going to be one crazy day for weather here on LI. Damaging non-thunderstorm and thunderstorm related wind gusts are expected. I posted the tornado warning above^. Non-thunderstorm related wind gusts could be even as high as 50kts if strong LLJ develops. SPC said that a TORNADO WATCH IS LIKELY.

Surface sustained winds in kts, green = 20-24kts, yellow = 25-29kts.

Tornado watch just put into effect:
Tornado Watch 635 is in effect until 900 PM EDT for the
following locations

NY
. New York counties included are

Bronx Dutchess Kings
Nassau New York Orange
Putnam Queens Richmond
Rockland Suffolk Westchester
