NWS zone forecast for tonight for my area:

Showers in the evening...then showers with isolated thunderstorms after midnight. Widespread fog in the evening. Locally heavy rainfall possible after midnight. Very windy with lows in the upper 40s. South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph... increasing to 30 to 35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph after midnight. chance of rain near 100 percent.

The models have been consistent with 60-80mph wind gusts tonight:

With heavy enough precip, I'm sure these gusts will come to fruition.

You all are so lucky!  <_<

40.0°F Overcast

0z NAM wind gust maps have wind gusts approaching 90mph just south of here! HOLY ****!!!! Though, there will be a tough inversion to fight and I have no idea if those algorithms take into account the inversion.

Think the winds will be stronger.

... High wind watch in effect from Wednesday evening through late
Wednesday night...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a high wind
watch... which is in effect from Wednesday evening through late
Wednesday night.

* Locations... southern Connecticut... Long Island... New York City
and neighboring portions of Westchester County and northeast New
Jersey.

* Hazards... damaging wind gusts.

* Winds... south 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.

* Timing... Wednesday night... especially from late evening into the
overnight.

* Impacts... these strong winds... in combination with heavy
rain... could bring down whole trees... large tree limbs... power
lines and unsecured outdoor objects. This could pose a hazard to
anyone out driving or walking Wednesday night... and to houses
and other structures near larger trees.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high wind watch means there is the potential for a hazardous
high wind event. Gusts of 58 mph or stronger may occur. Continue
to monitor the latest forecasts.

35.3°F Light Rain

Had snow to start, then sleet, then rain. Goodbye snowpack. Temps warming into the mid and upper 50's Wednesday. Wednesday night could be horrific with thunderstorms and high winds. GFS still showing wind gusts to be potentially as high as 80mph! Might have trouble mixing them down with an inversion.

The United States probably gets some of the most dynamic and potentially dangerous weather of any place in the world.

I agree. The US can see almost every kind of weather known, if not all. Tornadoes, hurricanes, blistering heat, extreme cold, dust storms, high winds, blizzards. Sure Canada gets some of those, but the US can get it to a higher degree. The climate of the US is so diverse too. From tropics, to deserts, to mountains, plains, you name it. I think if NOAA ran TWC, there would be more local forecasts (that are more accurate too), and better in depth analysis of weather events unlike the cheesy stuff they call "in-depth analysis" at TWC.

I've noticed this too, but it's not limited to New Jersey. The computer models can actually pick this phenomena up well. It's called downsloping. When air travels down a mountain, it warms, dries, and compresses, limiting the amount of precip. This can be see well in areas out west. Look at Seattle, WA average precip and compare it to Spokane, WA's average precip. Spokane comes in much lower because of this same phenomena.

22.3°F Light Overcast (See through the clouds)

Beautiful sky after 1.3" of snow we had earlier. Brings the snow depth back up to two.

Our town has been changing the street lights in our town for the past couple of years. Recently they've been working in our area and they've already changed them on the corner. There's a street light in front of my house that still has to be changed, probably tomorrow or over the next couple of days they'll change it. They are changing them from your typical high pressure sodium lights, to energy efficient induction lights. http://sayville.patch.com/articles/town-of-islip-announces-start-of-energy-efficient-street-light-upgrade-program
