General Discussion / Re: The Front Porch
« on: June 22, 2012, 03:38:45 PM »
Nice storm just came through with a rainfall rate of an inch an hour and gusts to 60mph. Branches are down here and there, some of the tall trees in my area are bent now due to the strong winds. The streets are completely flooded as well.

EDIT: After looking around, I noticed that there was lots of large branches and trees down. Lots of traffic lights out.

Sorry to post so much in here!

We did it! We broke the All-time Highest Min-Temperature for June! AND, we also broke the All-time Highest Daily Average Temperature for June, thus, yesterday was the warmest day so early in the year and warmest day ever recorded in the month of June. Climate Record Period: 1984-2012

Islip Area  (ThreadEx Station)
Extremes
Highest Daily Minimum Temperature (degrees F)
Days: 6/1 - 6/30
Length of period: 1 day
Years: 1984-2012

Rank  Value  Ending Date

  2      75  6/28/2010
  3      74  6/29/1999, 6/28/1999, 6/8/1999

Last value also occurred in one or more previous years.

This station's record may include data from more than one, possibly incompatible,
locations. It reflects the longest available record for the Islip Area.

... Heat advisory in effect until 7 PM EDT this evening...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a heat
advisory... which is in effect until 7 PM EDT this evening.

* Locations... western Suffolk County on Long Island.

* Hazards... high heat.

* Heat index values... around 100 degrees.

* Timing... highest heat indices early to mid afternoon.

* Impacts... these expected heat indices will result in dangerous
conditions for those spending prolonged periods of time outside.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and
humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 100 to
104 degrees for two consecutive hours. Take extra precautions if
you work or spend time outside. When possible... reschedule
strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs
and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light
weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty
of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency... call 9 1 1.

I'd like to also point out that we probably will break the record for the All-time Highest June Min-Temperature on record. That record is 75 degrees. So far, the low at KISP this morning was only 77 degrees, and with temperatures likely to remain above 77 degrees for the rest of the day, the low is likely to remain at 77. This is 2 degrees higher than the original All-time Highest June Min-Temperature on record, and 4 degrees shy of the All-time Highest Min-Temperature on record in KISP history.

I agree. I would take longer days over shorter days. I hate when the sun sets at 4:22PM in the winter, it feels like the day is over at that point. But the sun doesn't set that late here during the summer. It only sets at 8:26PM and Nautical twilight lasts until 9:43PM, so the time the sun sets doesn't bother me. I'd love to have the sun set later like how you guys have it, heck, I would even like 24 hours of sunlight. I even enjoy how early the sun rises here, about 5:20AM.
