Writing to deadmalls.com might help others know about all these dead malls. There's an article on Echelon at Labelscar.com, including pictures.
An idea just popped into my head this week: A couple years ago, the OnSpot Digital Network is installed at all Simon Property-owned malls including the Irving Mall. All the time they were showing news, sports, TV clips, and advertisments; they never show weather and/or traffic. So I thought, "Why not add TWC HD to the mix?"You know, that'd be a great Weatherscan upgrade too! I love it!
Here's my concept on TWC forecasts shown to mall goers (See attachments). The temperatures are color-cordinated to match the color legend (shown on National Forecast high & low maps).

Any comments and suggestions are welcome.
I"ve been to Echelon quite a number of times. That mall is pretty dead, I only visit the Boscovs there. Other than that it seems the food court is quite popular there. It's in a pretty onscured area tooI think that's one of the biggest reasons why the mall has been dead for nearly 10 years. It's far from any major roads like how most malls are, the closest probably being Route 73, which is still at least 10-15 minutes away. Not even close to any major bridges or freeways like I-295 or the NJ Turnpike. The recently renovated the property by demolishing half the mall and adding adjacent stores with a town center-esque theme, but I doubt that will help much, at least for the mall portion.
Billy is right. Usually, the locality that appears while current products are unavailable is where the headend is. However, TWC doesn't have the location of some headends, because the cable co only gives TWC the "name" of the headend. For example, the South Hills headend here doesn't use a location - it uses a name, so when there is an outage, the top of the CC screen reads "S HILLS GROUP/Bthl/Cstl Shn/MLeb/Drmt," which translates to the group of South Hills communities of Bethel Park, Castle Shannon, Mount Lebanon, and Dormont. This happened when Comcast took over Adelphia and consolidated the 4 headends in the South Hills to just one.Yeah, it's like that on the Bensalem/Levittown IntelliStar too; it doesn't show the city the headend is located, so instead, during an outage, the CC page shows the same title as the forecast title (Lower Bucks).
As another example, my Verizon headend displays "Pittsburgh VHO11," because that is the headend name (VHO stands for Video Hub Office, and Pittsburgh is Verizon's 11th headend).
Why are malls so empty these days? Economy? I went to the mall this afternoon and there were very few if any people...I remember seeing many people strolling around beforeI don't know, the Neshaminy Mall in Bensalem always seems crowded even late at night, yet they still are closing earlier.
they closed Circuit City, Linens N Things, and a Borders store this year.I bet you the already suffering Echelon Mall is doing even worse in this troubled economy. There's lots of vacancy around here right now. Car dealerships have also either closed or moved to different locations.
I miss CompUSA..
