It appears to show at the end of the LF, and out of place. Neat to see it again though

News and Updates / Public Release Now Available (April 2020)
« on: April 23, 2020, 02:33:56 PM »
Hi Folks,
I wanted to bring to your attention that I have created a new build of the Emulator. This is to correct a few data source issues, and also replace the "Regional Satellite" product with pre-configured projection views.

If you are a current emulator user:
  • Backup any custom music/backgrounds/logos that you work with. Then uninstall the emulator from your system. (Please do not do an in-place re-installation on top of the existing install.)
  • Under the 'Local Forecast' package, configure the 'Regional Satellite' view of choice, then 'Build' your config.
  • Proceed to download and install the new version of the Emulator. Do not forget to configure your ID, and replace any custom music/backgrounds/logos.

For new users, this is a repeat:
If you have never worked with program in the past, there are two halves.
1. CINE (The Configuration Interface for Networked Emulation) - This is the heart of where you control your emulator's experience. All settings and options are managed through this web-portal. Any changes made in the portal will propagate to the Emulator as it is running. You have the ability to "cue" all changes, then when you are ready, select 'Build Now' in CINE.
2. The Weatherscan XL Emulator application, itself. This is the client-end application which, when configured with your selected ID, will download, present, and update forecast and other regional details around the clock while it is running.

When you get started building your first config to work with the emulator, we suggest simply starting off with the 'Local Forecast' package. This is just to make sure all works correctly on your system. Once you have a working Local Forecast loop, you're welcome to add in other products.

Please be sure to make sure all options are configured, so you can "Build Now" all of your settings!! --Very important!!

So you would like some help?
It's quite alright, we have a live chat with humans just like you, and they are anxious to get you emulating too. We do this via the Discord Chat system. Join via this link from your computer or mobile app: https://discord.gg/EbM3Vfs

So, you think you're ready now?
Let's get started! Go visit CINE, create and validate your account information. Once you have completed this, then get building. Here's the link: http://wxcine.com:21863

Once again, we're happy to have you and we're excited your taking this opportunity to enjoy an emulator, which is a signature experience from not only mine, but other "The Weather Channel" viewers past.

TWC Today News / Some changes on the Forum
« on: April 17, 2020, 04:37:11 PM »
Hi Folks - Been doing some house keeping on the forum as of late.
-Fixed the email subsystem, which would affect new users signing up, or exchanging personal messages.
-Removed a bunch of unused user groups, mostly because those people are no longer patrons of the forum anymore.
-Combined all of Matt's "TWCClassics.com"-related forums into one grouping.
-Eliminated the old website which has not been touched ~10 years. Visiting twctodayforums.com will immediately redirect to the forum.

There have been thoughts on adding a "home" page which integrates with our forum, and perhaps bringing some of the old website content back to that in a better curated format.

BIG NEWS: I have set up the integration between the forum and the Tapatalk app for mobile devices. This will allow easy mobile access to collaborate and discuss on this forum.

Coming soon, perhaps a visual re-theme and new logo -- something to fit our time.

I know an old legacy admin 'Stephen' patronizes this forum from time to time, and I would like to hear his input, along with everyone else who visits here.

News and Updates / Intermediate Update - Aug 24 2018
« on: August 24, 2018, 04:01:17 PM »
Due to changes on the NWS data website, there have been format inconsistencies with the Extended Forecast product (SFT) across multiple states when downloaded (Hawaii, and Georgia to name a few). As I have been processing the NWS EMWIN data internally for alerts and other messages, I have decided to move the processing of this product in-house. To accommodate this, a change needed to be made in CINE, and in the emulator application.

If the Extended forecast has been spotty, or not functioning properly in the past, please select your city in the configuration, and build your settings together.

Additionally, this change will correct the intermittent temperature display to show erroneous characters (such as a / or improperly displayed negative numbers).

To utilize this intermediate update, download the binary from CINE, place in C:\WSXL, and run this executable directly.

News and Updates / Public Release Now Available (Dec 2017)

Hi Folks,
Thanks for checking in, you're just in time! We have had some great success over the last few months with closed, former member, and soft opening trials of the emulator.

Now is your chance to configure the emulator for yourself.

So you would like to get started? We're just as excited as you are, and can't wait to have you!

Hi Folks,
I think I have gotten the application to a point where it can stand well on its own two feet, but I need some individuals to test.

The requirements are:
1. You must be a former Emulator user that understands how the program works.
2. Can run it over the period of several days
3. Provide feedback of its operation, bugs, etc..

I have set up an official "Discord Chat" to facilitate live discussion of Beta testing: https://discord.gg/fJWYb4T

It has been many years since the application has been updated, which is good because up until 2016, not much has changed for the source of weather information.

Since 2016, the NWS has re-located where the program has sourced current condition and forecast data. The NWS has also completed the Mixed-case lettering transition of its products. Also IBM has purchased The Weather Channel name and digital assets, in turn re-located the online maps, and modernized their appearance.

Internally, the development environment is ran on Windows XP since its inception in 2003, then moved to a virtual machine in 2009. In mid-2016, the hard drive which contained this virtual machine environment suffered a file system crash and lost a key snapshot file in the virtual disk chain. I have since been able to recover the environment in such a way that no work was lost in the process. I have also re-located this virtual machine to a location which does undergo a daily backup to a RAID array.

Also, the domain 'copper.yi.org' which was home to Weatherscan Local's management portal has changed as well.

Enough of the bad news.. Here's some good news.. The move of data to the new location of the NWS was very seamless. Updating the program to fetch the operational config from the proper domain was seamless as well. The change to Mixed-case lettering threw off one of the management portal's scripts, but was easily fixed.

Currently, in the development environment, the program is able to fetch and present Local Forecast information along with Radar and Satellite maps, respectively. All other products, which rely on a map from The Weather Channel need to be sourced again before being enabled in the management portal.

So, moving forward, the maps will need to be updated in the program. I would like to clean out old commented source-code, and source-code which is no longer utilized. I am hoping to get a new client installer available soon to get folks back up and running, and re-open the gates for new users.

I am also looking for mature feedback in regards to where YOU would like to see the Weatherscan Local project to go next (realistic expectations, please). Leave them in this thread. Even if you are a lurker on this forum, a simple   will suffice to signal your continued interest in further development.

Brian
