Everything Else Classic TWC / Dan Chandler: 1938-2023
« on: March 10, 2023, 08:09:59 PM »
I do not know if this has already been mentioned elsewhere, but I've learned from Techknight on Twitter, as well as on Taiganet forums (were the WeatherStar 4000 Simulator is from), and on Discord, that legendary former TWC voice-over announcer, Dan Chandler (also known as Dan Huth) has passed away last month. He was 84. Prior to working as an announcer on The Weather Channel, he was also appeared on local Miami radio in the 1960s and even appeared on television shows like the Everglades! (1961-62) as well as on Flipper (1964-67) (a classic TV show that I used to enjoy when I was young back when it used to be re-runed on Nickelodeon in the early 1990s) where he played as "Warden Dennis". At first, I had no idea he was once on a couple of TV shows in the 1960s before he was an announcer on TWC, but I learned about it many years later here in the TWC fan community. He also once worked as a local morning show host on WSB-TV's Good Day Atlanta morning show in the early 1980s.

As we previously know, he also had appeared in a 1981 Chevrolet El Camino promotional dealership video as well as in a train documentary called Railroads of North America in 1994 while he was also on The Weather Channel. In addition to TWC, he also did narrations on various programs on the History Channel and HGTV as well. After when Taiganet first contacted him back in the spring of 2010, Dan Chandler was even nice enough to reach out a year later to do re-recordings of his own narration for the WeatherStar 4000 Simulator. The re-recorded narrations still sounded as beautiful as the originals from the original TWC broadcast and even to this very day, I still give Dan a lot of credit.

Without Dan Chandler, The Weather Channel would have never been iconic without a talented voice-over announcer with a beautiful voice like Dan's. My hearts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and everyone here in the TWC fan community.

I'll never forget this really nice thank you message that Dan shared back in 2012:
Quote
You know so well, when you and the team embarked on this project that there was nothing in it for you beyond the personal satisfaction of a demanding job meticulously and well-done.  To get "attaboys" is icing on the cake.

Thank you all for including me in your labor of love, and--[Bill Goodwill, simulator developer]--for sharing the incredible reactions. They go far beyond anything I could have expected.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Jeanetta Jones
« on: August 17, 2021, 03:00:29 PM »
It's sad that we now lost two former OCM legends on the same year. First Paul Emmick, and now Jeanetta Jones.  :(  Jeanetta was a really great personality of nearly 20 years on TWC (she even first joined the network on the same year that Jim Cantore and former personality Vivian Brown joined back in 1986 when the network first introduced their "For Everything You Do" campaign as well as the news anchor-style format). Long before the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a miracle that she survived that horrible car crash nearly 15 years ago, but left her paralyzed and led up to the end of her long-time talented career at TWC.

My heart, prayers, and condolences all go out to her, and her family, as well as friends of Jeanetta and everybody at TWC, past and present staff members at the network.

Nice custom backgrounds! I would like to have it on my simulator too.

Oh and one final thing:

one of my 4000s was heavily degraded and I had to fix this mess:

you can kinda see my raspberry pi video source superimposed into the signal. That obviously wasnt normal. But luckily I fixed all that mess. :-)
That's pretty cool that you got it to work again. As for the degradation issues, how did that happen? Was the circuit or video boards dirty or dusty?

It's been awhile since I was last here.  :(

Anyways, when I saw the video, I thought at first it was a VHS time-shift edit (you know, whenever you record something at the time of the original broadcast, and then hit either Pause or Stop on the VCR and wait a few minutes or hours, or even the next day or two with the tape still in the VCR, and then hit record again at a later time). Maybe TWC had a little bit of technical problems at the time of the broadcast perhaps?

As for my personal interest of TWC, I do agree that 2005 may have likely been the "turning point" in TWC's history since that was when they first began using the updated logo for the first time as well as the beginning of "Bringing Weather To Life" on air campaign and the debut of the "Storm Alert" theme during Hurricane Katrina out of all hurricanes. I still used to enjoy watching TWC even after the previous on air overhauls back in the late '90s and early to mid-2000s. June 2008 (the HD launch) was when things started to really go south and November 2013 was the beginning of the "channel drift" age of TWC with fewer and fewer live weather coverage even on a slow weather-related news day.

I still enjoy watching the storm coverage on TWC to this very day (even though they only seem to care about storm coverage more than they do on regular weather days), but when the documentaries and reality shows comes on, I always change the channel.

This August will mark the 15th anniversary of the logo change and "Bringing Weather To Life" era after all.

Nice job on the Weatherscan IntelliStar v1. It looks so real! I too have also always preferred the original v1 Weatherscan IntelliStar screen layout since it was less cluttered. I've also been dreaming for a Weatherscan IntelliStar v1 emulator/simulator for years since our local cable system never carried Weatherscan in my area and also ever since when I saw Intelliguy's Weatherscan videos from Philadelphia a few years ago on YouTube. Keep up the good work!

Whoa, never thought I'd see you pop up here again. I've always favored this style since I saw the same videos a few years back. Luckily, with new HQ footage (very slowly) creeping in, I was able to recreate the graphics with certainty. Thanks for your feedback!
You're welcome! ;)

It's been awhile since the last time I heard a legacy TWC song in the wild, but recently, while I was watching a video review of a long since discontinued Sony bookshelf stereo model on VWestlife's YouTube channel (the same guy that often cover all sorts of electronics, and computer-related stuff), one of the sample CDs he featured in the video features David Benoit's "Urban Daydreams" album and plays a little bit of "Sailing Through the City" (June 1990 and April 2002 playlists) when he demonstrated the built-in CD player feature.

Album cover is shown at 12:44 and starts playing at 13:30.

Figured it's worth mentioning, yesterday was the 10 year anniversary of the debut of the "v2 IntelliStar." Time sure does fly...
This is the first video of the v2 iStar, from when mine was a beta.  October 9, 2007.  Includes the last v1, Evening Edition (After Dark), and the first v2.

Interesting to point, I was able to acquire your Star IS.. It's nice to see videos from when this system was in full operation! Yes, I have a payphone too!
How did you get that original IntelliSTAR? That's so cool that you have one! Was this from eBay? Or was it from a random computer electronics recycler? I would even like to see if it's even possible to reverse engineer the IS (even though TWC stopped supporting it back in 2015). Either way, nice find!

Everything Else TWC / Re: Classic TWC stock footage (1998-2010)
« on: February 26, 2018, 12:30:53 AM »
Not quite stock footage related, but since some of these stock footage clips came from Getty Images, there's at least one photograph that was used on Weatherscan back in the early 2000s that I came across that features one of the official backgrounds (this was from the "Up Next" Neighborhood-themed background on Weatherscan). I really wish it was watermark free on those stock footage clips and images.

I was watching cc17926's latest YouTube stream, and Weatherscan is apparently still on in Willow Grove, PA (they also have Xfinity too).

Nice new look for Weatherscan! It's a darn shame they are planning on discontinuing Weatherscan soon (even TWC never did bother to update Weatherscan's overall look and feel all these years since September 2005 and the icons since March 2010). Either way, nice beautiful new look.

Beautiful job on the split screen and HD graphics recreations! I even like that mock control room video feed screen.

Sorry for bumping yet again, but earlier this afternoon, I've just heard "Stingray" by The Rippingtons (November 2003 playlist) on DirecTV's Sonic Tap Smooth Jazz channel. I personally love that song.
