Programming and Graphics / Re: TWC New Graphics
« on: August 21, 2019, 10:54:41 PM »
TWC finally adopts the simplistic, flat look!  It's about time.  This is the trend most stations go with nowadays, and I think it looks a whole lot cleaner.  I found that whole sidebar distracting.

Not sure how I feel about the font, though...

Thanks, um....yeah...there’s some big flaws in this concept. It’s funny how they have the week ahead and only show two days followed by showing the weekend separately. Last time I checked a calendar there were seven days that made up a week including the weekend. lol A text based forecast would be nice, but I get why it’s absent. There’s not a lot of space available for especially for days with active weather, they can get very lengthy because of how specific they can get.

The thing is, once again unless I am missing something and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, this is absolutely no different than what has always been shown on the LDL and sidebar since the debut of Weather all the Time in 2013. There is nothing changed!  Heck, look how the LDL doesn't ever start from the beginning when the LOT8s supposedly starts, it just keeps on scrolling through.  OK, now I see where a local radar and almanac have been placed over the national obs, national radar, etc, but that is only done if there's some big weather event happening. If there's no active weather, the local city radar and almanac show all the time.

This is why I'm so confused.  All they seemingly did was slap a LOT8s logo at the bottom left and briefly change the graphic at the top right for a minute and now seem to be claiming this is some new concept that they "figured out."  Well, I'm a bit concerned if it took a team of people to change a couple of logos around.

Yeah, okay, unless I missed something, this was a complete joke. Except for the graphic at the top right sidebar changing to say "Local on the 8s" for a minute, NOTHING else was different. The bottom bar kept scrolling through as normal, and the radar and almanac kept rotating through as normal on the right bar. Seriously?

I'm also not sure why the LOT8s logo is permanently being shown now at the bottom left now.

Well, it seems like the return of the L-Bar/squeezeback days, except there technically already IS that concept (weather all the time).  So I'm very curious as to what more they're going to add to the screen, since the LOT8s is technically always there.

Needless to say, I wonder if this is the start of the demise for the traditional, full-screen LOT8s segments?  I remember the days of 2-3 minute forecasts, but in the age of "instant" weather information via computer, tablet, phone, whatever, one could claim that LOT8s as we know it would soon become obsolete.

I merged these two topics together since they are the same.  We'll keep all discussion regarding the Local on the 8s change here.  Thanks!

Since TWC is no longer partly owned by NBCUniversal, I wonder who they go to for local stories and reporters now?  Obviously in the past, we'd always see stories, video footage, feeds, etc. solely from NBC stations.  I'm just curious how this works now that it doesn't just have to be NBC.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: Comcast HD Feed on SD Feed!
« on: September 02, 2017, 02:32:07 PM »
Weird, I have Spectrum, and the same thing has happened to me!  This was just recently though (past couple of weeks or so).  Seriously.  The HD channel started showing the SD version (non-letterbox), then shortly afterward, changed to a letterbox of the HD feed, still SD.  I called my cable company, and they were of no help.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Jennifer Lopez returns to TWC
« on: December 02, 2016, 11:41:10 AM »
Jennifer on WCL with Alex Wallace right now.  And wow! I didn't recognize her at first pwith the short hair and glasses! Glad she's still at TWC. I guess she is still just a freelancer as she doesn't seem to be on regularly. Why does WCL seem to have a different female OCM every day???

Programming and Graphics / Re: TWC on Election Day

Is this for real? The idea sounds like something the Onion might post.

Well, here's the press release, so I guess it's real.  Believe me, I was skeptical too when I first saw.

Programming and Graphics / TWC on Election Day

From USA Today

"Weather Channel wants you to keep your head in the clouds on Election Day"

Quote
The station hopes to draw Americans away from yammering political pundits and potentially terrifying election results by broadcasting a nine-hour marathon of "the most beautiful, awe-inspiring, and calming weather video and scenery ever caught on tape," it said in a press release Tuesday.

hanknjoyce,

This question sounds like it is directly aimed at TWC personnel.  As a disclaimer, this site is not affiliated with The Weather Channel in any way, nor are we endorsed by the company.

With that being said, I do believe The Weather Channel uses information from their own computer models and does not rely solely on the National Weather Service for their short-range and long-range forecasts.

Your Local Weather / Re: Major hailstorm in eastern Nebraska
« on: May 14, 2016, 02:16:23 PM »
This is so cool!  Hail covering the ground so it looks like snow is something I wouldn't mind experiencing in my lifetime (provided any damage is minimal to non-existent).  Since it looks like the hail in the pics isn't too big, hopefully you didn't sustain too much (or any) damage.

Local Forecast / Re: Smooth Jazz Return!
« on: April 28, 2016, 04:46:28 PM »
I find this "scheduled smooth jazz day" very, very strange - they even created a calendar through the end of the year?!?!  I mean, if they really don't want to overdose on smooth jazz, then to me it would make sense to just mix the production songs with smooth jazz.  Are they going to add "vocal music days" too?!
